casino pen scene - win

What scene that really disturbed you? Not your first horror movie scene but when you felt that pit of fear in your stomach?

For me I think it had to have been the Pen-scene from Casino, the shootout from Heat or seeing the Omaha beach scene from SPR for the first time. In no particular order they were my first run in with violence on film that was treated realistically, I'd see Boys Don't Cry later on and that was disturbing but it wasn't the first scene that really got me.
Anyways I think Heat as a kid I remember seeing the shootout, Val Kilmer firing at the cops on each side and as a 4 year old I thought that it was disturbing seeing the cops just die and lose like ordinary people, and seeing the skilled bad guy just win, my mom was watching it and I sat down to watch that scene and I just remember thinking about how "wow the bad guys win" as the cops all kept going down. Plus I'm sure the gunsounds had an affect on me, I remember being very emotionally overwhelmed, not crying or anything just angry that they couldn't hit or kill Val Kilmer or Deniro. And one by one each cop was going down. My childmind of "Good vs bad" was being rocked and I couldn't handle it.
Then there's Saving Private Ryan, when that ramp dropped, and I saw the bullet hole and the blood, I knew there was something different. Every shootout I was shown, every little bit of violence I saw before, all of it merited in some way, no consequences, no cause and effect, people get knocked over, no bullet wounds, or maybe it's fun to watch. But not Saving Private Ryan. Suddenly bullets tear through these men who they familiarize us with, giving us the cliche war movie looking types, mixing in with our heroes, adding a "anybody" can die feeling. And that's what happens. It's gore, it's fear, it's people screaming for their mom's as they realize they'll never go home, they'll die on this beach in fear and terror. Ignored by your friends and condemned by the enemy.
The violence had actual change to it, and not only that, it was very random, it didn't care, people who lived and who died was just a simple matter of standing here at this moment or leaning here at that moment. People were safe one second then a bullet would hit them in the head randomly and they were gone forever. Explosions left people without limbs, screaming, blood everywhere, there was no fire to just make it all go away in a stylistic fashion, and when we do see fire it's another horrific reality of being a flamethrower on that beach, the paranoia of carrying that thing, some soldiers unwillingly due to not being able to get the strap off before reaching the sea-wall.
Casino's pen scene, Scorsese can just film violence like you're in the room with the people, and the way he has the setting be a normal place, a bar, or diner, a place we've all seen before in Americana gothic fashion, it's a party scene and normal and with a foil exchange between a considerate Deniro and a very unlucky fake tough guy, the way Pesci just takes the pen, Scorsese doesn't hesitate on making us know what we're seeing until it's going down, the stabbing and screaming of the man as more and more holes are made in his throat causing him to gurgle and whistle through the holes in his neck. The close ups that let us know how deep this is. The randomness of the stabbing. The sadism of Nick Santoro as he calls him a little girl as he reverts back to a child as he cries thinking he's about to die. It's like a stabbing in prison or something, you feel like you don't want to be there but you're in the cellblock with the other inmates and this horrible shit is something I have to witness.
The music doesn't cut, it adds to the reality, the same way a tv doesn't stop playing, something terrible happens and there's always something that tells us that normality is still going on for someone somewhere. I remember Scorsese saying he remember seeing violent things and hearing a radio from an open window and how it was so surreal, and him seeing The Public Enemy (1931) where James Cagney's family thinks he's coming home but he's dead and his body is being dumped and as they discover his body the happy music they put on for him doesn't stop playing. This realization is what inspired him to start using counterpoint music to express some horrific moments in his films.
But yeah I was just thinking.

Decent 10-25$ tables (red/green) near NYC?

Hi all, thanks for the time and info.
I've saved up 500 for a ten dollar table at a real casino. Atlantic City is our usual go to, we haven't been there in 3.5 years. What are the best or at least decent casinos @ AC to visit for Blackjack? 75% pen would be nice, I'm not sure what the scene is like these days at real casinos regarding penetration. But that's what I've been practicing on for months on a free app.
Any other places near NYC would also be appreciated, so I can look them up.
Thanks.

Respect Red Jacket Lupin the 3rd! (Lupin the 3rd Part 2)

"That just means the game isn't over yet! The goddess of victory will smile upon me, Lupin III!"
Required listening for this thread
Lupin III is the grandson of Arsène Lupin. He is the world's most wanted gentleman thief. Lupin is acknowledged by virtually every law agency on earth as the world's number one thief. Often in his adventures, he and his colleagues, Daisuke Jigen and Goemon Ishikawa XIII, will take it upon themselves to foil other criminals engaged in more violent crimes. While first glance may imply Lupin as fun-loving, flighty, perhaps even "goofy", his surface façade overcoats a brilliant imagination and a thorough knowledge of a hundred varying sciences. Forever extemporizing and reevaluating, Lupin has been responsible for heists no right-minded individual would believe possible. While arrested and jailed on numerous occasions, typically by his nemesis Inspector Zenigata, he has always managed to escape. He has a fondness for fancy gadgets from time to time plus hands-on experience in many skills a thief would find useful. His infatuation with Fujiko Mine is perhaps his most significant weakness, as it lands him in undesirable situations most of the time.

Equipment

Exactly what it sounds like. They are released to distract the motion sensors of an extremely secure museum
A rapidly expanding airbag.
Lupin's trademark blue and white boxer shorts double as an emergency parachute.
A small bomb that detonates when shot by Jigen.
A set of balloons that lift an Egyptian death mask display. Lupin also has a larger set they used to steal the Statue of Liberty
A briefcase containing a rapidly expanding balloon filled with knockout gas.
A small, golden coin with his face on it. When thrown, releases a giant Lupin-shaped dummy.
Several large barrels of explosive liquid set off by flaming rags.
A massive hang-glider shaped like a bat.
A grenade that, upon contact, expands into a massive blow up doll.
A decorative bracelet with a wire/chain on the end.
A pair of wings and an engine that extend from a handheld briefcase.
A massive bubble that protects Lupin from traps.
A nearly invisible hang-glider.
A small, silver ball that emits a loud bang, a burst of light, and rainbow confetti.
A large, green balloon with Lupin's face on it.
A paddleboat hidden within a larger boat's hull. The boat also has a large engine on the back
Several duck-shaped bombs that are capable of sinking large ships. They do not discern what they're blowing up, however, and can be dangerous. They can also be hidden
A dummy head that when stomped emits a thick smokescreen.
A dummy large enough for Lupin to hide inside. Can expand enough to lift a large truck
An electric gun developed by the same scientist who invented Lightsabers. Can cut through bullet proof glass, lift a store's worth of jewels and helps pull a building apart. It also instantly KOs Zenigata
Includes exploding chewing gum, exploding cigarettes, exploding cigars, an explosive hat an exploding head, a exploding lighter, a exploding mask, exploding navigation stick, an explosive suit, an explosive tooth, and an explosive watch
One of Lupin's left molars. Has a brevity of uses including a remote control for one of his vehicles, a computer that can analyze any drugs he's given, a pair of robotic arms that can throw the drugs back, a radio, and a lockpick
A small aerosol can that allows Lupin to lift fingerprints from a glass.
A small grenade that lets off a colorful explosion.
A remotely-controlled flying car. It manages to lift off the ground but nothing else.
A small device that opens a miniature black hole when used.
A grenade with a powerful knockout gas. Works fast enough to cover an entire oil rig in seconds.
A massive, propelled dummy of Lupin and Jigen that explodes with a giant boom and flash
A rocket fired from an RPG that, when detonated, sprays glue strong enough to stick several large ships together.
Pieces needed to assemble a working go-kart.

A standard hearse that turns into a helocopter.
A horse capable of outrunning several jeeps, dodging bullets, and running across a small ladder. Lupin has a way with animals that allows him to frequently use them in his escapes. Also he got a horse to do this once. I don't feel like trying to explain it.
A standard jetpack.
A pair of shoes which turn into personal jetpacks when activated by tapdancing. They can also be used offensively and for escapes
A small kusari-gama capable of swinging a car back onto an icy road
Works as a lighter and also can emit a powerful knockout gas. Also explodes when dynamite is strapped to it, as most things do and works as a communicator
A powerful drug slipped into Zenigata's drink.
A pair of magnetic hand grips that assist in climbing.
Standard marbles or ball bearings used to make a pursuer lose their footing.
A small kite able to carry Lupin.
A mini oxygen tank shaped like a cigarette.
A fleet of tiny RC cars, all remotely controlled by Lupin. Comes in Red, Green, and Yellow.

A car that doubles as a submarine with the flip of a switch. Allows Lupin and the gang to avoid a missile.
A pistol-sized gun that fires a suction cup on a rope. Strong enough to lift a man.
A car that can be driven from either the front or the rear.

Season 3 Episode 4. Casino Manager office scene

*spoiler*

I'm sure this has been discussed before, and my search for it was a bit lazy because there's so much discussion all over the web, so apologizes if this has been pointed out before.
In the scene where Dougie meets with the Casino Manager and gets his money, Dougie is transfixed with a pen on some kind of red dice pedestal on the manager's desk. He can't stop staring at it and the manager notices. Unless I am mistaken, there is a continuity error with the position of the pen. When the composition is a MCU of Dougie the pen appears to be pointing straight up. When the composition is a MCU of the casino manager the pen is positioned at an angle leaning towards the right, perhaps at a 60 degree angle or so. I don't think that its a matter of camera placement only making this seem to be a continuity error. I kept looking at it for that reason, but I don't think so.
I don't know what to make of this. Clearly Dougie is bringing attention to the pen, so it has some significance that Lynch/Frost wants us to see. Its definitely different than the other continuity errors that suggest a jump in dimensions. As far as I can tell it suggests that Cooper never leaves the Black Lodge until Episode 18.
Its fun to watch this season again after a year or two, I also never noticed the owl in that episode before, or at least I had forgotten.

[All] And men are coming

In P12, Sarah Palmer lost it in the grocery store, scaring the young clerks. Things unravelled fast, and then she ran out.
Sarah: "Find the car key. Find the car key. Get the car key. Get the car ... get the goddamn car key!"
Later in the episode, Hawk went to see what was going on with Sarah. As he walked to the door, we got a good look of the street in front of the house. There was no car parked there except Hawk's own. The Palmer's house was on a small hill, and it didn't have a garage, so they had kept the car on the street in front of it. We were reminded of this in the FWWM flashback in P17 when Laura ran to James's motorbike, and Leland's 1975 Chevrolet Caprice Classic was parked on the street in the same place where Cooper parked his Lincoln in the finale. Sarah was home, but there was no car, so apparently she didn't have one.
A frail alcoholic like Sarah wasn't expected to have a car anyway, so something else was going on with the car keys. She wasn't talking about her own keys or even about her own car.
In P3, someone else was trying to find car keys. Cooper had just emerged from a socket in Las Vegas, but wasn't really functional, so Dougie's lady friend Jade needed to put on his "damn shoes". Then she got another worry.
Jade: "You do have your keys, right?"
She searched his pockets but there were no car keys.
Jade: "You mean Jade has to give you two rides?"
Then they got going with Jade's car. Dougie's 2000 Ford Taurus was left on the driveway. There was a shot of its back. Its register plate number was "DUGE LV".
What would any of that have got to do with Sarah Palmer?
Just as things started to get out of hand in the store, she seemed to give the clerks an ominous warning.
Sarah: "Your room seems different - and men are coming."
The first part sounded like a throwback to an odd Fire Walk with Me: Missing Pieces scene in which Cooper told an off-screen Diane that she "had changed something in this room". Then he triumphantly realized she had "moved that clock 12 inches to the left". Watch carefully.
Watching carefully, what had changed in the grocery store was the position of the card reader's pen that was now on the left side of the reader whereas it had earlier been strangely sticking out of it. When it was briefly shown in its original position, there was just one line of dialog.
Sarah: "Uh, could I have a carton of Salems, please?"
So, were we supposed to do something with that? A carton of Salems. Perhaps this wasn't blatant tobacco product placement but yet another one of Lynch's anagrams. If so, it sure works as one, and easily so.
A CARTON OF SALEMS NAMES OF A LOST CAR
Coincidently, this was another connection to the scene when Jade was trying to find Dougie's car keys. That car went missing - or at least Janey-E had no idea where it was - and then it was literally lost for good when it blew up in P5. Then in P6, when the officers were inspecting the scene, they found its register plate on the neighbor's roof. A Patrol Officer climbed up the ladder to read it aloud.
Patrol Officer: "David, union, George, Edward, Lincoln, Victor."
Names of a lost car. There were five names in total, "union" not being a name. They were all names of men, which seems to be what Sarah meant with "men are coming". So, we got a list of names now:
David, George, Edward, Lincoln, Victor
Just as Sarah said, "and men are coming", the male clerk credited as Bag-boy came to attention. He wanted to be coming, too? We could see from his name tag that he was Oscar. Including him on the list of names would then complete it as:
David, George, Edward, Lincoln, Victor, Oscar
Since the names were used for a register plate, let's reconvert them to one:
DOGELV
If this was as intended, the whole thing would have been set up just to switch the letter "U" to "O".
There apparently was an amusing "checksum" that this indeed was as intended. In P13, the episode that followed, Norma reprimanded her brand handler Walter that she had given other diners her exact recipes and how her ingredients were expected to be "natural, organic, local". On her way out, Sarah passed a sign "LOCAL" that was hanging above the window. The beef jerky package promoted it as "natural". At 10:41, Sarah turned briefly to look at a sign selling "artisan" bread that often implies traditional ingredients and methods.
All this got its meaning from Walter's innocent remark.
Walter: "Norma, I assure you they're following your recipes to the letter --"
Indeed, we followed the "recipes" to the letter. Let's bake it next. The updated set of letters works as an anagram for:
GLOVED
When Sarah had run out, Oscar got his only line of dialog.
Bag-boy: "I know where she lives. I can d-deliver them. I guess."
In P14, James and Freddie - "that gloved freak", as Chad called him in P15 - were waiting for delivery.
Freddie: "Okay, Jimmy. We got one more delivery, and then it's hit the Roadhouse."
Freddie then told a story how he had got that mysterious green rubber glove stuck in his right hand that gave his arm "the power of an enormous pile driver". Then James left him, reminding him of the delivery.
James: "You wait for the delivery. Don't forget to sign the invoice. I'm gonna go check the furnaces."
Later in P17, as Freddie and BOB were dueling it out, BOB hissed him an odd remark.
BOB: "Catch you ... with my death bag."
It looked like that what little screen time the grocery store Bag-boy got, it was used to link him to Freddie with one of Return's hairiest riddles. But since the Bag-boy himself had only a fleeting presence in the story, he needed to link somewhere else to make the connection meaningful. That brings us to the pen that stuck out of the card reader that was in the same position as the pen on Ben's desk later in the episode, apparently used to link together Ben and Richard Horne and Supervisor Burns of Silver Mustang Casino.

[All] Saturn

In P4, having won 30 (or was it 29?) jackpots, Cooper was wandering in the Silver Mustang Casino lobby. Pit Boss Warrick ran after him and took him to Supervisor Burns's office to collect the money.
Burns was seated behind his desk. When Warrick put Cooper sitting in a chair on the other side of the desk, he got curiously fixated by a pen that was standing in a base made of red dice. Also Burns glanced at the pen quickly.
For some reason, Cooper couldn't get his eyes off the pen. Burns managed to distract him briefly by placing a huge bag of money on the table but soon Cooper was back to staring at the pen again. While staring at it, he repeated a word from Burns's small talk.
Cooper: "Who?"
Eventually, staring at the pen stopped, but the message was difficult to miss: there was something in the pen that we needed to figure out. Besides all that staring, it didn't feature in the scene in any other capacity so the answer was probably somewhere else. So, who ... else had that kind of pen?
There was a similarly placed pen on Ben Horne's desk, sticking out in the same angle. It was prominently on display in P10 when Sheriff Truman came to bring him some bad news about Richard. At that time, Ben was also dressed in identical colors as Burns. There even was another pen on the table next to his right hand that kept jumping inconsistently between two positions, just like another pen next to Burns's right hand in the earlier scene.
But back to the other pen whose counterpart was stared into importance. In Ben's office, the pen pointed at a Saturn-like figure painted on the wooden wall behind him. Coincidentally, Ben's grandson Richard, the topic of the Sheriff's visit, was driving a broken 1996 Saturn.
In another coincident, Burns was dressed in the colors of Richard's unusually painted car. This was one of several similarities between the two.
In P16, Richard got somehow burnt into oblivion on a rock. In P5, Burns (sic) got "fucking fired" by Bradley. In P15, Richard was kicked hard by Mr C when he was lying on the ground, and Rodney kicked Burns hard when he was on the floor. In P10, before robbing her, Richard said his grandmother Sylvia had always wanted him to "leave town", and Bradley told Burns to "leave town".
Burns had a bag that got money worth "thousands of dollars" like Janey-E said later that evening. In P10, Richard said, "I got money", and then he robbed his grandmother who later complained to Ben he had taken "thousands of dollars" that he had stuffed in her purse.
After Burns was dragged out of the control room, he was never seen or mentioned again, in line with Bradley telling him, "Don't ever come back". Later in the same episode, Richard made his first appearance. He didn't have a bag of cash yet, but he had a cigarette packet filled with cash that he gave to Chad.
So, that pen led us to wonder if Burns and Richard were meant to be the same character, separated by time and space to their own worlds. However, while amusing as such, it didn't seem to make much difference. Something was still missing from this dilemma, and for that something we probably need to go back to Ben who was also wearing the same colors as Burns that were the colors of Richard's car. After all, that Saturn was on his wall.

Unbreakable

So. I want to put a huge disclaimer at the beginning of this story. If you have trouble with stories about/containing suicide then do NOT read this. It’s not gory or a first person tale of suicide, but I just wanted to give a fair warning.
The brown and green Quith female crooked an eye at that, her smooth damp skin glistening in the dim light of the bar.
“So you want to know about humans do you?” she asked, smiling a sad smile and looking down at her drink for a moment.
“I don’t blame you… they seem like a wild species to most, one of only five sapient deathworld species to ever break the light speed barrier and by far the most interesting of those five…” she said with a sigh.
“But you already know that… don’t you? Of course you do.” She said, chuckling softly and taking a large gulp from the mug in front of her.
“I’m sure you’ve heard all the stories about how unstoppable they are, how it is impossible to break them or beat them down.” She said, bringing a chuckle from a few of the barflies that were eavesdropping. “Yes, yes they truly have an amazing ability to survive whatever the universe throws at them don’t they?” She said sardonically.
“Well…” she said, taking a deep breath as if readying herself for something. “I know for a fact that that isn’t always true…”
“Okay, okay calm down…” she said, drawing a bit more attention before taking another long pull from her mug. “I’ll tell you my story… But you’re not going to like it.”
“It started as just a normal day as stories like these always do.” she said, eliciting another chuckle from the now grown crowd of eavesdropping barflies. “Like any other, I crawled out of my nice warm sleeping bog into the crisp morning air that leaked in through my windows, shrugged on my moisture retainer and a set of clothes, grabbed a fish from my tank for breakfast and headed out the door. It was another idyllic day on the fringe, another day at work like any other.” She said, her eyes glazing over slightly as she started to get lost in the memory.
“I hopped on a shuttle and headed into the office, I’d worked from home the past week due to a cold so I thought that it would be good to get out and see my coworkers in person after being cooped up for so long. To my surprise and delight an acquaintance of mine: a human janitor by the name of Frank whose company I had come to enjoy was sitting at one of the desks. He was asleep by the looks of things with a content smile on his face.” she said, smiling fondly at that memory before shuddering for some reason and taking a deep breath in through her nostrils.
“He was a quiet man, but hardworking and he always seemed to have something nice or interesting to say whenever he did speak.” She said, her voice trembling slightly as she described the human. “He looked peaceful, like he was getting some much needed rest after pulling an all-nighter so I decided there was no harm in letting the janitor rest and made my way to my desk, swallowing down the last of my fish as I walked.” She said, making some of the listeners comment about how they’d ‘been there’ before.
“I sat down and settled in to the happy monotony of my job for a few hours till a loud scream grabbed my attention.” she said, making the eavesdroppers hush their whispering as they realized the story was about to get interesting. “I stood up and quickly located its source, the supervisor – a female Quith like myself – was standing by Frank’s desk screeching in terror. I ran over, like many of my co-workers, and joined the murmuring crowd that had gathered looking for answers.” She said, her voice trailing off to a whisper and making everyone lean in a bit closer. “Everyone at the front of the pack was strangely still and silent so I carefully pushed my way past them and instantly saw why. Frank was lying limply on the floor, his chair knocked over and that same peaceful smile on his face with the supervisor quietly sobbing in the corner of his cubicle.” she said, shuddering slightly as she remembered the scene.
“I reached out a hand and tentatively touched Frank… He was cold and lifeless. Frank was dead.” She said quietly, looking down at her hand as she did.
The crowd was dead silent, and when she stopped looking at her hand she looked around. “From the look on your faces I can tell that you want to know how he died. What could have possibly killed the unkillable, indomitable human? Well… He killed himself.” she said, making everyone express some form of either shock or disbelief.
She continued talking, raising her voice slightly to talk over the crowd. “He’d bought a pen of human ‘insulin’ under the guise of a family member needing it and injected the entire thing into himself. He was dead long before I found him at his desk.” She said, tipping back her mug till it was empty.
“What?” she asked, setting down the mug. “Oh sorry. Yeah I don’t blame you, I wanted to know why too. After all, it seemed too fantastic to be true. All the stories that have humans dying are all about them bravely sacrificing themselves, or fighting against a force they had no hope of beating and taking with them as many enemies as they could… But I guarantee you that for every one of those stories there’s one like mine. Especially on rim worlds…” she said, looking down at her mug and waiving over the bartender when she saw that it was empty.
Her order was interrupted by one of the more inebriated patrons slurring something about ‘fringe’ and ‘rim’. “What?” She asked, prompting him to repeat himself. “Oh no you’re not wrong, I did say that the planet we were on was a fringe world, not a rim world, the start of the rim was about a hundred light-years away at least. It’s relevant I promise, I’ll explain everything. Just give me a moment.” she said, slightly disgruntled as she finished giving the bartender her order and waited patiently for him to refill her mug.
She took a long pull from it before continuing her story. “Anyways, like I said I wanted to know what could have prompted Frank to do this, so I asked the only person I thought might know something. Dave, the other human that worked in the office.” She said, smiling as she recalled the man.
“Dave had a reputation as someone you can talk to about anything. Especially if you were looking for advice, as he had probably been through a lot worse.” She said, still smiling as she played with the murky brown foam on her beverage. “Dave grew up on an industrial world about fifty light-years away in what was then the middle of the rim. From what I heard it was pretty rough: union busting raids, monopolies, gangs. Typical rim world, lawless but profitable by any means necessary… at least, profitable for those on top anyways.” She said, swallowing dryly.
“His family worked together, saving up money in secret then stowing away on a transport headed core-ward, hopping from planet to planet as their money allowed it and working odd and factory jobs when it didn’t.” She said, sighing and sinking into her chair slightly. “Eventually, they ended up on the fringe, where things were much easier for them. Food was cheaper, work was more plentiful, and after a while, Dave and his siblings were able to get decent educations.”
As she described the human family pulling itself up by sheer will the other patrons smiled briefly before remembering what they had previously been talking about. “Long story short, he ended up working in the same office as Frank and I.” she said, obviously deep in some memory or another.
“Anyways, after giving him a week or two to mourn his fellow human, I approached him and asked what could have possibly prompted Frank to take his own life… I’ll never forget the response I got…” She said, a shiver running down her entire form. “Dave sat down and sighed loudly before saying ‘He didn’t have anything keeping him here anymore.’”
“I balked at that,” she said with a pained chuckle as a sullen silence settled over the now noticeably larger crowd. “I asked him what he meant by that. That the statement made no sense! After all, Frank was a human! What could possibly be so bad that a human decides to give up like one of… _us_…”
She shivered once more and opened her mouth for a moment, only to close it and bite her lip. “Dave didn’t like that… He got very angry and asked me what I knew about Frank’s living conditions…” she said, her gills flushing in shame, “I admitted that I didn’t know much and he told me that ever since Frank got on world, he’d been bouncing from job to job, city to city, living out of a large electric van that he put together from parts he had to steal from a scrapyard… He told me that Frank was barely eating enough to sustain himself, and that he had been sending most of his pay back to his family out on the rim so that they could join him here someday…” She explained, sighing into her mug and taking another large gulp.
“While that sounded difficult, it didn’t seem like something that would break a human; especially with their tendency towards modern nomadism… But there was one part of that story that stood out, so I asked: ‘Frank was sending money back to his family?’” She slumped forward slightly, resting her forehead on the table and taking a deep, shuddering breath. “Dave responded with two words… ‘Yes, was’” she said, once again forcing a hush on the crowd as they realized the implications.
“It turned out that Frank had not been as lucky as Dave… Frank’s family lived on a cartel world…” She explained, making a couple of people wince or hiss. “Exactly,” she said, sighing and slumping back into her chair, as if resigning herself to tell the rest of the story. “Frank’s family had been saving up much like Dave’s had… But before they could afford to get everyone smuggled off planet, Frank’s father was injured working in one of the factories. They had enough money to treat it, but without his income…” she began, but couldn’t seem to find the right words.
“In the end, they decided to send Frank off world to try and get a better job and secure a place for them to reunite eventually… That was the plan at least… Until the Federation decided to take apart the Cartel that is.” she said, the pained expression on her face finding itself on several of the crowd as well.
“His family took in a wounded soldier that got shot in the shanty town that they were living in during one of the early assaults.” she explained, staring deeply into her mug. “They saved the young soldier’s life, and gave her everything that they had on the workings of the cartel that they figured out after years of living on world… The fastest routes around town, known safe houses and floating casinos, collaborators, hidden shuttles… Information that the soldier took back to her commanders and would prove to be extremely useful in taking down the cartel…” she said, draining the last of her mug with a defeated sigh.
“They would have been hailed as heroes when the town was liberated… that is… if one of their neighbors didn’t see the soldier sneaking out once she was healed enough to walk.” She said, a distant anger visible behind the drunkenness in her eyes. “By the time the soldier came back with the rest of the army, Frank’s family had already been publicly executed.”
“The soldier,” she began, after a long pause of staring hatefully at her empty mug, “Showed up on planet the day before Frank killed himself.” She said, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. “She told Frank that his family saved her life. That they gave her the information they needed to keep any of the cartel from getting away. That they were heroes… And that they were dead.” She said, her voice dripping with sadness. “She told him that he should be proud of them. That they did the stories she’d heard of humanity justice… And that she was sorry for his loss…”
A hush fell over the crowd that nobody seemed to want to break as the Quith sat there staring sadly at her drink. “They were the only thing keeping Frank going… Day after day of going to bed hungry, and tired, and cold in a cramped vehicle that he put together with parts that he had to beg, borrow, and steal for… And the only thing that was keeping him together was the thought that with each day, each paycheck, he was getting closer and closer to bringing his family to him… And now they were dead…” she said, smiling sardonically and closing her eyes.
“You know the funny thing? Humans have this saying about themselves; more of an excuse really. They call it ‘only human.’” she said, smiling slightly. “‘Sorry, I made a mistake. I’m only human.’ they say, or ‘I can’t possibly do that, I’m only human after all.’ or maybe even ‘I need help. Please, I can’t do this on my own… I’m only human.’” she said, bringing a tear to many eyes capable of crying.
“The worst part is what Dave told me about how Frank saw the rest of us… Frank didn’t think that he could come to any of his colleagues with his problems. He didn’t think that they’d take him seriously. He’s human after all… What could possibly break a big, strong human in our eyes. What problems could they possibly have that we could relate to?” she asked, making looks of shame and discomfort spread through the crowd as everyone realized they’d thought that exact same thing at some point.
“Well take it from me that humans aren’t unbreakable… They’re the hardest to break species I’ve ever known, true juggernauts of willpower…” she said, smiling weakly. “But they still feel pain, they still feel depression… They’re still sapients just like you and me… They struggle along through life like the rest of us, clinging from one bit of hope to the next like the rest of us… and sometimes, they break like the rest of us.” she said, before smiling and taking a deep breath.
“So do the humans a favor. Don’t always assume that they’ll be fine or that they are always happy and healthy. It will go a long way for them to know that we care about them as much as they care about us.” She said, motioning the bartender over to pay her tab.
“You’re tab’s been taken care of,” the bartender said, nodding in the direction of a lone human, sitting at a table, raising a glass in her direction. His eyes were red, and his cheeks were wet with tears.

Lupin Final
