The North State Journal - Proposed Catawba Indian casino ...

catawba indian casino north carolina

catawba indian casino north carolina - win

Who is DefendNC that is mailing anti casino mailings complete with pre-paid postcards?

A quality printed piece came in the mail complete with pre-paid postcards addressed to Gov. Roy Cooper and Atty Gen. Stein. It alleges there's a proposed casino being put forth by a SC casino developer who was once indicted for operating an illegal gambling business.
The piece never mentions which project, who the developer is, what are any other specifics of the project. I smell a very well funded astroturfing (fake grass roots) effort here. Who is doing this manipulating and what are their motivations. Google has nothing that I can find.
What's the real deal here?

Moe Davis intends to serve on the House Natural Resources Committee. This includes the Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States.
In the House, this is the ONLY subcommittee for the 574 tribes to discuss their sovereignty issues. Moe Davis talked to Chief Sneed on July 9th: https://youtu.be/VdXKFJ9u6G4?t=45
More important, Chief Sneed testified on September 24, 2020 re: U.S. Department of Interior decision on the Catawba Indian lands. Key timepoints for the ONE recent meeting:

https://youtu.be/_SNwYswwbho?t=3430

Bottom line: We have NO House representative member to ask our questions to the Catawba Indians (or to subpoena the Dept of the Interior leadership to the Hill to testify on WHY they did what they did). The House Representative needs to influence the other members when that green screen comes up in the middle of the discussion. Madison Cawthorn will NOT be influential.

Senate Bill: https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/senate-bill/790/text
On the Senate Side: I want to point out Senator Tillis does NOT support the Eastern Band of Cherokee’s position. Senator Tillis SUPPORTS the Catawba Indians by actually introducing the Senate Bill. Senator Tillis CHOOSE to hurt the economy of Western North Carolina.
Note: I think the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian's Casino is either the second or third largest employer in our region. The funds go to supporting the hospital, schools, etc. This is a HUGE economic issue.

Moe Davis | Popular Opinion Didn't Support Him | He Deserves Blame For The Result

Let's face a fact: Moe Davis fucked up to lose to an unqualified candidate. I just want to get my thoughts down on the tactical errors while they're fresh. This is my lonely opinion regarding "the downside" of the candidate.
Second Amendment. People called bullshit and they got it right. Western North Carolina will be a "Second Amendment Sanctuary" District if Virginia changes their gun regulations. People here are raised with guns and know gun laws. He was asked about his support for a ban on military assault rifles and give a "bright line" example of two closely related rifles (one that is a military assault rifle and one that is not). He said he "couldn't come up with an example" and most gun owners knew he was untrustworthy. People thought he had an idea in-mind and didn't want to show his cards in order to get elected.
Attitude Problem. Moe Davis is arrogant as fuck. Ancestral Republicans (perhaps, Independents/Democrats) were acutely aware of his manners. People don't have a high tolerance for arrogance. Also, people in Buncombe county tolerated his behavior in order to get him elected but word travelled fast about his attitude. Each of the three debates reinforced the personality trait.
Refusal To Apologize: Moe Davis should have apologized for his dumb ass tweets, deleted them, and moved on. He could reference the apology when repeatedly brought up by the media. Yet, he had a huge ego and chose the path to justify them, providing context for what happened during "that day" which most people didn't understand. We have to deal with Trump tweets and another layer of tweets is exhausting.
Social Media. I have no confidence Moe Davis would commit to being a statesmen in social media. "Old dogs don't learn new tricks."
To Slow To Change. The Catawba Indians will build a new casino and cut off the economy of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Chief Sneed talked about the issue with Moe Davis on a YouTube and emphasized the economic impact to Western North Carolina. The tribe's casino is the second largest employer after Mission Hospital. Moe Davis took two months to announce his position to oppose construction of the casino.
Refusal To Address A Major Problem. NOBODY likes Blue Cross/Blue Shield North Carolina insurance. The insurance company reduced rates in the middle of the state because new health insurance competitors entered the market. To maintain profit, Blue Cross/Blue Shield North Carolina increased rates in Western North Carolina in 2018-2020. I talked to Moe Davis about this problem and he said it was not his priority.
Pitch To Veterans. Instead, Moe Davis want to focus on Veteran healthcare. His vision was the healthcare was threatened by privatization. Then, he said the Asheville VA offered great healthcare. He was searching for a problem and veterans were not buying it.
Outreach. Facebook Live and YouTube sessions are bullshit. The same people asked the same questions. WTF are we talking about the electoral college, again. Who the fuck cares about Moe Davis opinion? What I saw lacking: new People didn't receive a warm welcome, humor, better engagement, and any follow-up after the discussion. Come on: Moe Davis is sitting in a house! Use your phone, dude. I asked a question via Facebook and received the rudest response.
Campaign Manager. I think Graeme McGuggicke lacked the skills to get him to the finish line. And, he didn't want any assistance. Moe wasn't willing to change. There were TONS of moments where I witnessed activities and was embarrassed.
***
Less is more is necessary to be elected to high office. Second Amendment, Environment (Forests/Land Management), Broadband, Jobs (relevant to blue collar), Abortion (Supporting Families), and Healthcare Cost are the major issues for future candidates.

RALEIGH — On March 12, the Catawba Indian Nation held a press conference to present renderings and construction plans for a new destination casino on a site in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. According to a press release, the U.S. Department of the Interior has taken the land in question into trust and, as a result, the Catawba Indian Nation can now move forward with the proposed project.
