(Repost because my first try did not manage to attract attention) When I read that the so-proclaimed, Hongkong/Macau based "King of Gambling" Stanley Ho had died at age 98 I was quite astonished to read that despite not being Muslim (at least I found no mention of this anywhere) he was married to no less than four wives, which apparently was possible because polygamy remained legal in Hongkong until 1971. I had not been aware that Hongkong and/or China had any significant traditions regarding polygamy, and at least according to my quick Wikipedia research this in fact was not the case. So how come that polygamy was a thing in Hongkong, and why did the British authorities tolerate this practice until into the 70s?
