NSS busts ex-Yerevan mayor Beglaryan / Money laundering / Property theft

NSS report says: in 2009, Yerevan mayor Beglaryan colluded with Center District officials to embezzle property.
They organized an illegal scheme to donate 4 properties worth $488k, located on "expensive" streets, to an accomplice, who then sold them to Beglaryan's family for pennies.
The properties, in reality, belonged to Beglaryan. He used others to launder and conceal the theft. A felony case is launched.

other criminal cases involving Beglaryan
On March/24/2020 we learned that HHK Gagik Beglaryan, a former Transport Minister and Yerevan mayor, was placed on the wanted list and an arrest warrant in-absentia was issued.
At the time, he was charged with embezzling $483k worth property at the expense of a kindergarten. The investigation began after new mayor Hayk Marutyan busted 27 instances of kindergarten embezzlement by the former regime.

In another instance, Beglaryan's brother - a public official in charge of Sports Teams Center - gave property to his wife under suspicious circumstances.
His house was also raided as part of a fraud investigation involving North-South highway construction.

Lots of lands are still left unused, however. The village is popular with carrot production. There is even a popular song dedicated to Aramus's carrot.
Locals asked Pashinyan to rebuild the road connecting to the neighboring village. "It hasn't been renovated since 1965."

BHK chief Tsarukyan's casino hasn't paid the fees

Shangri La casino, the largest in Armenia, didn't pay the licensing fees for 3 months, totaling $2.8m, citing COVID-related issues. The IRS wants the money.
When asked about why they renewed their license despite knowing they wouldn't have clients, the casino said "we wanted to remain open and continue to pay employee salaries."
The IRS had earlier invited them to discuss the issue but they didn't show up. They claimed that not enough time was given for preparations.

Civil society groups discuss election reforms / Ineligible voters inflating electoral numbers

NGOs held a meeting:
The govt has SECT system that contains information about whether the person is located in Armenia. Since SECT was implemented in certain checkpoints with delays, it doesn't have accurate info about people who left/entered.
Another problem for SECT is caused when the person changes their last name abroad, for example after marriage.
If "Sasun" moves to Russia and writes his name as "Sergey", it'll case a problem.

One way to fix the problem with ineligible voters being on voter lists, as it's done in Georgia, is to require a valid ID to keep the person on the list.
These days, expired passports are not accepted for any transaction except for voting. This exception should be removed.

This will remove 188,000 people from voter lists.
Inflated numbers cause various problems. It makes it harder to gather enough % votes to add an issue to a ballot.

We also need to make sure people are registered to vote in districts where they actually live. This is especially important for provincial elections because local officials have a record of collecting residents from elsewhere to vote in another location.

Many people don't want to register their real address as their voting address because they want to hide the fact that they own the new address they live in (tax purposes?).
We must make it clear to the public that these electoral changes have no legal effect on their property ownership issues.

Casino Near Me

Casino Near Me
Going to a casino for the first time can be a very exciting experience. We’re not talking about going to the small venue casinos which have dozens of slots, a smoke vibe and a single table with electronic roulette. No, we’re talking about going to a massive casino, spa and resort where you can take advantage of everything the establishment has to offer. You can gamble on the many games these casinos have in stock, but you can also spend days enjoying yourself without spending a single penny on the casino games. In this article we will help you in how to have fun at the casino and simply use your little Casino Near Me.

https://preview.redd.it/51ebkwr946n41.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=e0bce0648505c7577b9e8607d6a67a554b0913ed
What to do at a casino?
Well the obvious answer is to gamble. You can easily get lost in the thousands of slot machines which dominate the casino floor, including the progressive jackpots where one lucky spin can easily change your life. If you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere head over to the tables. Here you can put your skills to the test against the dealer on the Blackjack tables or chase your lucky number on the roulette wheel. If you hear a commotion on the table floor, don’t worry. It’s just the crowd gathered around the craps table cheering the shooter up. Whatever you chose you are guaranteed to have fun and feel the adrenaline rush from gambling with real money. Learn all the secrets of the casino games at the following websites:
How much money should you bring at a casino?
The biggest mistake you can make when you go to a casino for the first time is to bring all of the money you planned for the trip. Being an unexperienced player you can easily get caught up in the end and excitement up losing your money. Every experienced gambler will tell you to go to the casino only with the money you are prepared to lose. You have to understand that casino games are games of chance where the odds are stacked against you. Every casino game has a certain house edge which works in favor of the house. So when you gamble you have a bigger chance of losing than winning. In order to avoid going home broke bring enough money with you to try a few games and have fun. In order to have fun, just because you’re at the casino it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to gamble. There are many more things you can do during your stay.
What to do at a casino besides gamble?
Modern casinos and resorts know that they have to offer more to visitors beside casino games. If you’re not a gambler you can easily become bored on the casino floor after some time and look for other things to do. If there’s none to offer, you won’t enjoy your stay and the chances are you won’t come back to the casino again. But with modern resorts you will find plenty of things to do without ever stepping on the casino floor. Here’s a list of 9 things you can do when visiting a modern casino.
Enjoy in fine dinning
All players at the casino have to eat sooner or later. Many casinos offer buffets where you can eat for a low price or even get comped in a free meal. But nowadays more and more establishments incorporate high end restaurants in their casinos and employ the services of renowned chefs. This serves to attract new people to the casinos, who primarily come for the fine dining. The chances are that they will also spend some money on the casino games, increasing the overall profit.
Watch the shows
Shows are a big part of casinos today, especially those in Las Vegas. You can often see a popular singer holding a show at some casino on the strip or a casino hosting an event with several celebrities. The shows tend to attract a massive crowd and they are usually sold out weeks in advance. If some of the guests visit the casino floor after the show, again these shows serve to amuse the guest and the casino has a chance to earn some extra profit.
Go to an exhibit
Casinos are one of the last places that you would expect to host an exhibit. But lately more and more casinos are adding exhibits to attract visitors. This is usually the case with casinos owned by native Americans which show their heritage.
Watch other people
No, were not talking about creeping the guests by staring at them from some dark corner. Casinos attract people of all sorts and sometimes is can be fun to simply watch them and analyze how they behave on the casino floor. You can also easily start a conversation and socialize with the guests, since most of them are pretty friendly people.
Work
Casinos are always on the lookout for employees. Massive casinos need a big number of employees to function, starting from the valet parking to the dealers on the tables. If any jobs are available, if you’re interested in taking up a job at the casino you can easily check their website or you can ask around for their HR department and see.
Watch a sports game
Sports betting is a big thing at pretty much all major casinos. Many of them have sports rooms where you can sit down and enjoy watching a game on massive HD monitors or on the video wall. If you like you can also place a bet or you can simply have a few beers and enjoy the game like you would in your favorite sports bar.
Hit the bars
Bars are a must have at all major establishments. Every player wants to take a time out and go to the bar for a few drinks and socialize with other people. At some casinos you can also play slots or video poker while at the bar. Today most reputable casinos also open up high end bars to attract a higher clientele. Many of them also open up Hard Rock Café bars in order to attract millennials.
Go shopping
If you visit a casino with a partner who loves to gamble and it’s simply not your thing, shopping can be a great pastime, especially. You can visit the malls or the many outlet stores which the casino has in place. Some casinos also have brand stores where you can get some discount just for being a guest at the casino.
Enjoy the spa’s
Visiting the spa can be a great way to kick back and relax after a hard day of gambling. Many casino resorts have spa’s where you can spend hours or even days relaxing. This way visiting the casino can become a very nice holiday and you can come back home refreshed and full of energy, ready to get back to your daily chores.

"Can I hire people for equity instead of cash?" and "Should I work for equity instead of cash"

Founders: Should you let early employees work for equity instead of cash?
Employees: Is a hot startup offering you equity instead of cash for your work?
This post explores the issues around providing or accepting work for equity in advance of seed funding. It highlights the substantial risks, potential problems and outlines common structures. It is in three sections: Founders, Employees and Deal Structure. Paying vendors or service providers with equity is discussed in the last section.
Edit: Thanks for the gold! Is that gold in equity or cash? :-)
FOUNDERS
When starting a company, cash can be scarce and good people can be expensive. If skilled people are willing to work for you for only equity, congratulations! That's a rare and huge vote of confidence. However, even if they are willing, should you accept labor for equity-only payment? The answer is "it depends."
Upsides
Downsides
As a serial entrepreneur, I've done equity comp deals more than once. My macro advice to founders is to avoid doing it if you possibly can. The risks and distractions are substantial. However, sometimes there's simply no other way forward for the business. In that case, do it for the shortest time possible, do it right and do it very carefully. Here's your basic decision tree:
  1. Can you avoid it? Is this person absolutely essential such that the business cannot move forward at all without their full time efforts? You should never consider an equity-only comp deal for anyone that is doing things you could do yourself sort-of-nearly as well. This is not something you do for an office manager or CFO. By definition, when you start paying salaries, this person is going to be one of your highest paid people, because their skills are so valuable.
  2. Is this person able to do it? You need to figure out if this person is really able to afford gambling and losing their paycheck. Conversely, are they just doing it because they don't have any other paying job prospects at the moment? If so, it's highly unlikely this person's skills are unique and valuable enough to consider doing this.
  3. Do you have momentum and serious prospects for funding? I'm not talking about the typical "We're gonna be bigger than Facebook!" bravado we put on for everyone else. I'm talking about that quiet conversation you have with yourself when deciding to risk the deed to your house on the success of your company. In that long, dark tea-time of the soul, do you really have serious prospects or is this still a dream riding on a wing and a prayer? If you don't have solid momentum yet, it's better to wait. The amount of time you can sustain a deal like this is limited. If you start too soon, it'll blow up before you're able to convert to salary and that could interrupt your dream just as it's becoming reality.
  4. Can you do a partial? It's much better to do a blended approach. Here's how I've done it. Pay the person a flat monthly fee as a 1099 contractor and accrue equity for the rest. In one example, I paid a super-star developer $2,000 a month as a contractor and the rest in equity. Based on discussions with him, I knew this was just enough for him to make his house payment and cover groceries, so he wasn't eating substantially into his savings. This was important because closing funding on favorable terms took longer than expected. If he'd been burning his savings I would have been forced to take funding on less favorable terms and that would have been bad for both of us. Was it fun to write that $2,000 check every month out of my personal savings account? No, but this was the best way to do it. When I sold the company, the equity he earned as a contractor before being hired was worth around a quarter of a million dollars (not including the equity he later earned as an employee).
Risks
The legal risks are substantial, especially if it's an all-equity, no-cash deal. If your startup doesn't pay for the work, it's possible you don't own the intellectual property. That could include software code, website graphics, customer lists or pretty much anything else. Even if you are "paying" substantial equity on paper, the reality is the equity is worth zero until it's not. No matter what kind of contract the parties sign, there is a risk you may not own the IP unless some vaguely reasonable amount of cash changes hands. This contractor could later make a claim against you and your startup. Am I a lawyer? Nope. But good lawyers worry about this scenario. I've had smart Sand Hill Road VCs turn pale on discovering this kind of deal on the books during due diligence - even though we'd long since started paying salaries. Like a scarlet letter, the potential liability never fades and never goes away. It'll remain an outstanding risk for the life of your company.
At the bright and bold beginning of your brave new adventure you're all comrades in arms, but over time things can change. Especially if your venture starts to become the success you've dreamed it can be. When that first glowing article about your startup hits the national media everyone who ever did a favor for you starts coming out of the woodwork. Most of them will go away empty handed. However, anyone you did this kind of deal with has some legitimacy to their claim. Is it a rock solid claim? No. But it's real and it's not nothing. When you do this kind of all-equity, no-cash comp deal, you are handing a loaded gun to every person you do the deal with. They are your best friend today and maybe they'll be your best friend forever but someday you may wake up to find that gun pointed at your head. Curiously, it's usually about the day after a bunch of extra zeroes appear in your bank account balance. Ask Mark Zuckerberg how costly it can be dealing with the ghosts of messy little deals made back when it was all fun and games.
Are you nervous yet? Good. Now go back to step 1 above and see if you can figure out a way not to need to do this. If you can't then whisper a prayer, hold your breath and proceed to Deal Structure below.
EMPLOYEES
Is that hot startup that looks to be the next Pinterest or Snapchat short on cash? Is it looking like an opportunity to get in on the ground floor and score some extra bonus stock options by working for free until they close funding and can afford to pay you? If you are presented with this option, is it a smart thing to do? The answer is "it depends".
Upsides
Downsides
My advice to prospective employees is to be incredibly paranoid and overly cautious when considering any arrangement like this. Never, ever bet money you can't afford to lose. All startups are substantially riskier bets than any casino game in Las Vegas. Even if the company is one of the few to become profitable, it doesn't mean that the startup's stock options will ever be sellable in a private or public transaction.
Although the startup may refer to you as an employee. Until you are receiving a cash salary greater than minimum wage, you are not an employee. You are an independent contractor. They can't list you as an employee with the state until they are actually paying you cash and they can't do withholding, FICA and social security deductions as a percentage of zero. It doesn't work that way. Until you are employed you do not get benefits of any kind. The company's health and liability insurance do not cover you. You are not eligible for severance or unemployment benefits. The company is not obligated to reimburse you for any expenses unless agreed in advance.
Are you nervous? Good. You probably shouldn't do this. You will likely regret doing this. If you are still determined to do this, proceed to Deal Structure below.
DEAL STRUCTURE
There are generally two parts to these types of deals and you should negotiate them as separate agreements. The first is the future job offer and the second is the contractor's work-for-equity arrangement which can be thought of as an investment in the company.
The Job Offer
Typically, the trigger event for cash salaried employment is the startup closing funding. On that glorious day, how much will the job pay and what will the benefits be? Negotiate the terms of the job offer first, unrelated to the prior equity contractor work. There are many external references for employee salary+equity compensation including salary sites like Glassdoor as well as current job listings for the area.
When the startup is funded and the employee's cash salary begins, the prior contractor-work-for-equity arrangement stops. That future day will be the employee's official "Start Date" with the company. Prior to that they are an independent contractor.
On that future start date as an official employee, part of the overall comp package will include things like health care, vacation days and participation in the ESOP (employee stock option program). Negotiate this now, and do so unrelated to any prior equity-comp arrangement. It should just be fair equity comp for a regular employee hired on that date for cash salary post-funding. Depending on the employee's skills and the company's needs, that can range from sub 1% to several percent and will typically include some kind of cliff and vesting schedule. This should simply be the same deal the startup would offer an equally skilled employee who walked in post-funding and accepted a regular job.
The employee's participation in the ESOP will start on their "Start Date", not before. From that actual start date the ESOP equity will begin vesting under the standard vesting program. Once the parties have agreed on the terms of the future job offer, an important piece of information is now known: the employee/contractor's monthly value to the startup. For convenience, let's say you've all agreed the future cash salary will be $90k/yr gross plus some equity options. That works out to $7500/mo.
The Equity-for-Work Contractor
Any equity deal to compensate the contractor needs to be based on the actual amount of time worked not a flat percentage like 1%. It should be a percentage rate that accrues per month that the contractor does non-salaried work and pro-rated down to the working day.
Let's say, for example, the contractor's work is valued at $7500/mo. The contractor could just take a lump payment in cash on their employee start date for the contractor work done up to that point at a rate of $7500/mo. That would be structuring the deal as a loan to the company. The problem is it's an unsecured loan on a high risk venture. The risk the contractor will do good work and never receive value for it are substantial. So, just like VCs and hedge funds, any increased risk should be compensated with increased upside.
Today, no one knows the value of this new venture but on the day the first external funding closes (not friends & family), smart investors will have estimated the value of the venture and the founders will have agreed this is the value of the venture. For example, let's imagine that 10 months from now the startup raises $1M at a post-money valuation of $4M. That means the day before they closed funding, 100% of the company was worth $3M. As a starting point, we would take $75k (10 x $7.5k/mo) and divide it into the $3M valuation. Obviously, the contractor should get substantially more than that amount of equity just for the ten months of work, otherwise he'd have been working for less than his subsequent employee salary. This risk premium is often a percentage increase similar to what is done with a convertible note. Google "Convertible Note" for more information.
In essence the contractor is investing in the startup exactly like an angel or seed investor. It's just in the form of reinvesting for equity the cash he would have been paid. Because this contract portion of the equity earned is virtually the same as a seed investor, the parties may agree to make the contract portion of the equity options payable in preferred shares instead of common shares like the ESOP. This is an advantage for the contractor because in any liquidation, preferred shares have senior rights. For example in a bankruptcy the preferred shares would receive funding ahead of common shares from the ESOP.
Depending on the terms, this kind of deal can have various advantages and disadvantages for both the company and the contractor. The company can halt the contractor accruing equity at any time by hiring the contractor as an employee and starting his cash salary. They could also choose to not hire the contractor as an employee at all. This preserves all the company's options. It also ensures, if the contractor does ten months of work and the startup opts not to hire the contractor as an employee, he still receives the equity compensation agreed on for the contract work.
The two distinct phases of the deal should not be conflated (contractor and employee). Otherwise, the company could terminate the employee in the first year after paid employment starts (in the one year cliff period) and all the equity the employee earned while a contractor would be zeroed out too.
So What's it Worth?
There are three components to the contractor part of the deal:
The equity in a pre-revenue, pre-funding startup is valued at a steep discount to cash since the equity could worth be X% of zero. How much of a discount? There's no firm guide and precedent varies widely. It depends on both party's expectations of the future viability of the startup. The founder's track record will likely be a factor as well as any tangible product, investor and customer momentum. On the other side, market demand for the prospective contractor's unique skills can drive up their value and the risk premium they can command. A 2x premium is certainly not unheard of, meaning the contractor receives $2 in equity priced at the next funding for every $1 they gave up in salary.
Variations and Twists
There are several variations to this kind of deal structure which the parties can consider. My preferred approach is to never do equity-only payments. It's just too risky for both parties. I advise startups, instead of setting up contractors, hire them as employees at minimum wage and accrue the difference between minimum wage and their full compensation as equity options. This has several benefits including avoiding potential issues with justifying independent contractor status as well as providing cash value for services and labor received.
There are other variations as well. Equity for no-cash contractor work should vest on funding because that agreement, or portion of the agreement, will be concluded on completion of the contract work. The contractor can negotiate to have their vesting start date for ESOP options backdated from their employee start date to their contractor start date. A cash payment of some accrued bonus at funding (the end of the contract) can be considered, which may reduce the amount of equity being accrued somewhat. Sometimes these equity comp deals are mixed with deferred compensation which is repaid as cash plus interest upon funding, or alternatively, as cash plus equity. Another twist would be to agree, in the event of bankruptcy, to convert any contractor equity options to back-wages owed. Wages owed are one of the first obligations paid in a bankruptcy, whereas stock options are generally paid last if any funds remain. Since the duration of the contract work is unknown at the outset, an interest rate paid in extra options can be accrued similar to a convertible note. I've seen such interest rates vary from half a percent a month to two percent a month (note: this is as a percentage of the contractor's equity, not the company's overall equity). In another variation, the company might have the option to repurchase the options at a premium for some time period after the funding, essentially using cash from the funding to retire the options.
What About Vendors and Service Providers?
Some vendors or service providers may be willing to work for equity or part equity, part cash. In one of my startups, for the first two years, our law firm, accounting firm and landlord all took 100% equity and no cash for their services. The landlord supplied a completely furnished office and covered our phone, internet, utilities and janitorial - all for equity. This was not during "the bubble" and it was not in silicon valley, however it was based on a substantial track record. In general, vendors willing to take equity are rare.
With vendors, the structure of the deal mirrors the contractor arrangement discussed above. When I sold that company, all these vendors did well from their equity and were quite pleased. However, I wish I had converted those agreements to cash payments sooner. Though I personally had the cash to pay vendors at the beginning, and certainly had the cash after we reached profitability, maintaining these equity payments seemed like a good trade-off to put more cash into growth. If you do pay vendors with equity, keep a ledger and make sure you update the price in the ledger to your current share price, so you're constantly aware how much is accruing. It can add up and surprise you. While they certainly earned it, I'll admit watching that much money go to those guys in the end was a little painful. I still get nice Christmas cards from all of them though. :-)

[OC] [Complacency] Chapter 5: Why didn't I think of that?

First Chapter: https://www.reddit.com/HFY/comments/6o09vy/oc_complacency_in_a_rut/
Previous | Next
“Next floor up is crew quarters. My room is the first door, it takes a crew badge to unlock that button in the elevator. Since quarters are private, I won’t be able to show you around, but they are generally identical in layout to the passenger rooms below. Everyone adds their own personal touches. Bathroom fixtures, lighting, furniture, and decorations vary by species and taste, but it’s the same single room with personal shower and attached bathroom as every unit starts off.” The ideal full complement would be 250 crew. Originally the cryopods allowed for around 15,000 bodies in cold sleep tubes packed into racks, but as of right now we have about 1,400 passenger rooms left. We could easily expand that to a lot more like we did during the passenger liner years, but that cuts into cargo space and makes for more maintenance than the 6 crew we have left could ever hope to maintain. Speaking of which. the current crew consists of 6 including myself, enough to run the ship barely, and we keep a single level of passenger rooms ready just in case, but the rest are left in standard configuration, empty, unpowered, with the ventilation shut down. It’s all ready to be aired out and set to species specifies out of ship stores and fabbers if we have call, but we haven’t had more than a dozen passengers at once in years. Most people prefer direct flights on passenger shuttles for business, or fancy accommodations on liners with entertainment and casino facilities for vacationing. Were a kind of fuzzy in the middle option, once in a while we pick up someone looking for a cheap way to get to the next port for a change of scenery, occasionally we have to accommodate security minders for sensitive cargo, once in a while we take on a group of musicians or performers that go port to port. But those are rare cases. Oh, there was one time we volunteered to move a few hundred refugees off world when the disaster happened on that Whardel research colony near the core. The artificial wormhole accident. Cracked the planetary crust, it was earthquakes and ash storms nonstop, we happened to be within a single jump dropping supplies to a research station when it happened. We heard the general distress beacon and responded immediately. We managed to save just about everyone left after their own ships had lifted, they were all over capacity and none of them would have made it back in time for the rest, the time to recharge and spool a return jump would have been nearly a full day, and I doubt they had more than a few hours before their buildings toppled.” “I heard about that, I didn’t know anyone besides their own ships had been involved in the evacuation.” “Tsch, typical. Not even a mention in the footnotes. That’s corp controlled news feeds for you. But the Whardel government was gracious. Even if they did search the ship for ‘possible research materials that might have accidentally been left onboard’ by the evacuated people. They did hand us a decent reward though. A stack of credits, and a favorable attitude from any official government shipments we take on. We still get first right of refusal on any mass transportation they outsource from their homeworld. In fact we were the ones who moved their last colony setup near the rim. Did the whole manufacturing base and prefabs in one haul. That was lucrative.” They moved back to the main corridor and Hirami waved for him to follow to a large opening a bit further on. “And here's the mess. The partition can be drawn back, the full space has room to seat about 500, and there is a matching setup across the corridor, but it feels kind of eerie to eat in such a huge space, so we had these retractable partition walls put up. We have room for about 20 various being, and a set of seating and tables appropriate to just about every species laying around right now. The ship was retrofitted after first contact as you know, and we make occasional upgrades, but this might interest you. These fabbers are the same models we got when they put our first black hole reactor, FTL drive, and grav plating systems in." "Mind if I have a look?" "Go ahead, but if you break it, you gotta fix it."
Karl smiled and stepped over to the maintenance access door leading to the narrow space behind the fabber bank. After 5 minutes the captain started to wonder what was up.
"Hey, everything alright in there?" "Yeah, shit, sorry. It's just...... If I'm seeing this right, these memory units aren't like any I've seen before on a food synth. Hell, they look a lot like the chip based memory and crystal storage media in my dad's old laptop." "Well yeah, actually, they are. That's all pre contact hardware designs. The ship's systems were updated, and some stuff was replaced, but the majority was left in place as more than adequate, and they simply made adapter interfaces for the hardware so the ship’s computers could talk to them. Our engineers and techs from the company wrote drivers for us. It was probably really damn complex, but that's how it was explained to me. Most of the alien tech was made to be as generic and adaptable as possible to allow a basic unit to fit into a ship no matter which species made it, so at the time, the process of providing the core command access, and designing idiot proof adapters was old hat. The tech might be super advanced, compared to what the Shore was built with, but when the thing only requires on/off and a numeric code to spit out a pre-programmed recipe or pattern, making an in between to talk with our computer wasn't beyond the capabilities of even our onboard maintenance crew, let alone the big think tanks back on Terra." "Shit, wow, but don't you know what that means?" "That our fabbers are a bit outdated? Yeah, so the hardware is kinda oversized and clunky, but it makes replacing parts a bit easier...." "No, no shit, if anything that's a benefit over the newer models, it gets the job done exactly the same, no what I'm getting at is that your memory system isn't standard. How can you get new recipes and patterns?" "OH, that, yeah we catch flak for that a LOT whenever we try to grab something new. We can't pull from Galnet directly for it, but that was part of our original contract. Our writ predates the whole DRM thing, what we buy belongs to us, and when we first got this system my great great grandfather was wise enough to see where negotiating for the terms of our pattern acquisition was smarter than taking the generic contract. You can't get away with that anymore, but according to our contract what we buy is ours, and any new patterns that come out have to be provided in a compatible format to us. That means unencrypted. Our computer can store a lot of info, but the processing power it takes to decrypt the patterns as they are today is WAY beyond what the subsystem management computer can chug through in a reasonable amount of time. The main core could handle it, or the engineering system, but they didn’t want to tie up the computer controlling the reactor, or the system keeping us on course through subspace, to be tied up with a massive spike in runtime being dedicated to telling the fabber it’s ok to give someone a fucking hot-pocket when they get the munchies at 2 in the morning. True it means any time we buy a new pattern we have to go park on a factory world for a day while the ship gets a once over from paranoid security teams from the galactic trade authority, and our writ gets analyzed by a room full of lawyers, but in the end they send someone in with a fabbed up old school computer surrounded by a small army loaded for war, transfer the file, quadruple check that I have re-locked the main computer with my full biometric scan, and then glare at us really hard until we jump out of the system." "Shit, so what happens if you lose a drive?" "Oh, no problem, we have a monthly backup of the whole core made during each maintenance cycle, we keep hard copies of everything going back at least a year. The most recent is usually still in my desk by the time the next one happens, the older ones go in the vault. I pull the oldest one out when I drop a new one in and throw it in the recycle on my cabin's fabber." "So how far back does it go? How big is the library?" "Mmmmmm, well as to the age, we have never actually lost the backups. Sure we had some major system failures that wiped the current, but we never lost more than 39 days ship time in records. As to the size? Wow, uhhhh, I don't know. We have patterns for a LOT. I mean, we did a stint now and then as a long range passenger liner. So we have fairly extensive food patterns and personal needs items, toiletries, analog games, sports, exercise equipment, and basic comfort designs for all the known species, some of it is a bit out of date, but it’s all good stuff. There was that decade or so where grandpa got it in his head that we could be a mobile space maintenance garage, so we have basic part patterns for just about anything standard as far as small ships go, plus the patterns to fab about 90% of this ship, though we lack the space or a big enough unit for producing the really big structural members. There was a good solid year when our FTL engines overloaded and fused into the structure around them in the engine room, that was NASTY, we almost lost the ship, it took forever to get a spot in one of the big drydocks, so while we were parked dad had the idea to buy out a small manufacturing plant that produced ground vehicles and one seat pleasure craft. He had their fabbers brought up from the planet, installed in the main cargo hold, and we rented the land and original building to some art studio looking for a bigger space. We started pumping out shuttles and cars and so on, and because we were producing them right next to the dock we didn't have to pay to haul them up out of a gravity well, so we did pretty good on profit for that. In fact I had a great idea, this was when I was about 13, so honestly the design work and actual implementation was done by the crew, but it was my concept, we made a strap on landing craft from standard components, one of those small cargo pod flying brick designs. It could seat about 20 people, and hold a decent amount of luggage. We actually have a few in the side bays that we used as landers when we were a passenger liner last time. Anyway, the idea was to use that space for a flatbed loader truck, knock a hole from the passenger cabin through to the cargo area and exit ramp. Seal the cockpit with a little airlock, no it just seats 2, the pilot and one passenger, but you have a delivery truck with the cargo on it ready to roll, you load it with the goods, drive it in and clamp it in the shuttle, land, then just drive out of the port and make the delivery without having to pay for local shipping! We made a mint off that one. And since we still own the patent we constantly get residuals every time a bigger cargo ship needs to make a drop on a world that lacks the facilities to allow them to land." Through this entire speech Karl had been silent, he sat heavily on a bench seat and let out a long low whistle. "Come on, it's not that crazy of an idea." "No, no it's not that, it's just.... It's elegant and simple. It's sensible. It's useful. That's an impressive and profitable idea from a teenager, but that's not what floored me. Your library, it's basically permanent, and your telling me you have been building an eclectic and frankly staggering collection for three hundred years. That is insane, you probably have more patterns for food than every restaurant I've ever been in combined, you could probably manufacture just about anything short of quantum systems and mem cores that was smaller than a freakin shuttle. You could do almost anything...... So why the hell are you doing trading and delivery off the main routes in a backwater like this? Heck, the only reason you could even land here is because the port was built to service mining rigs." "Well, that all comes back to what I mentioned before. I wasn't joking about the mega corps wanting our blood. Frankly if we tried to set up shop in any one place, we would have a direct competitor backed by a corp undercutting us to the point of losing on sales within a day. The only businesses we can compete with are ones that move, and even then, only ones that are either government sanctioned and regulated, or involve inherent competitive requirements between rival factions. Trade is trade wherever you go, deliveries are an industry that has prices determined by cold hard mathmatics and can only be adjusted by the need for tighter schedules. We do what we can when we can and where we can, but our options are narrow. That trick with turning the main cargo bay into a factory? That worked once, and only once. If we pulled something like that again, we would have a factory making identical stuff parked nose to nose with us and giving it's goods away at a loss until we folded. In fact that basically happened near the end. A much more aesthetically pleasing lander that was lighter and designed specifically around the idea I made, just different enough not to violate my patent, went into production and started selling at the station we had been parked at that year. The opening sale priced it at half my design's, though once we finished the engine replacement and shut down our direct manufacturing and turned the designs over to be licenced out on galnet, their price went up to a reasonable rate. And that wasn't the only nasty experience that year. There were about a dozen minor parts with serious flaws in the new engines, and several of those would have resulted in catastrophic failure had we jumped out of the system before checking them over ourselves. We had a good laugh when we declared our intent to warm up the jump drive as a preflight test while still docked. The Beretis dock foreman voided himself in the comm room when Dad announced it. He was still onboard waiting for the paperwork to finish uploading. Some flimsy excuses were made about having just recalled a standard post installation inspection and killed the uplink to the payment system before the release of escro on the funds was confirmed. Naturally he discovered some 'mistakes' made by supposed outside contractors. We wound up with a hell of a discount in the end, and thumbed our noses on the ride out while re-checking the repair work done after that. Still had a few substandard parts and a decent amount of lost screws and loose wires, but nothing fatal, or beyond our ability to replace out of the onboard fabbers." "Hell, that really isn't a joke at all, you were almost killed! how do you even deal with that?" "Well, I'd like to say it's because Im just that tough, but the fact is, that's par for the course. I'm jaded. Paranoid, alert to, and constantly on watch for, but blasé about this kind of thing. I grew up with this, it's basically normal to me." "Wow. I can't even imagine. I mean, I comprehend it intellectually, but on an emotional level it's so outside my own experience that I can't register what it must be like. I'm really sorry things are like that." "Oh hell, don't give me this sympathy line, I wouldn't trade my life for a dirtside day job, or a willingly become a corporate robot. I have money, I have freedom, I see new worlds constantly, I can go wherever I want, and my home comes with me. I am fully aware of the luxuries I inherited, shit, mid level corp management don't have the variety of diet I do, and I haven't had a day in my life I lacked necessities. I'm spoiled rotten for comfort, and the price for that is vigilance. Well, vigilance and some hard work. I might have a hell of a library and a honking big ship, but keeping her not only spaceworthy but up to code, and paying these yahoos a living wage arent cheap. Financially we get by, but our liquid assets are nothing to brag about. Credit's pretty damn solid though. But I try to never borrow unless I know I can pay it back before interest rolls in hard. Which is probably why my credit IS so good." "Smart. Also, wow. Again. I'm saying wow too much aren't I? Sorry." "Haha, don't sweat it. My life is kind of abnormal, I get that. But that doesn't make me any less human." "Shit, if anything you are the most human person I've met in my life. Most of the crew that pass through the port are either corporate types that watch everything they say and do, or laborers that have zero ambition or creativity. I've run into a few tourists on occasion, but again, mostly corporate types that try to pretend they have noting going on in their heads that wouldn't be approved by employee resources guidelines. There was that one journalist, he seemed to have a spark of something, but he didn't stay long, had to keep moving to follow whatever story he was on. But really, just about everyone I ever met, human or otherwise, was just.... I dunno, existing. They accept their place in life, they do their job, they save up for the occasional luxury, but they don't really dream beyond wishing for more money. They don't WANT anything beyond what's in front of them. All their desires are spawned by commercials and billboards. And anything that doesn't come pre-packaged doesn't appeal." "Their complacent and content with the system." "Exactly! They have a routine, and they are satisfied to stick with it. They just kind of accept the status-quo and go with it." "Are you angry at them for being boring, or are you angry with yourself for being one of them?" "What? Shit, I'm not like that." "Really? Ok, you may not fit the standard repair tech mold, but you seem to have a routine. You're a bit outside what's normal, but you seem to be pretty much content with where you are in life." "The hell I am, I might be stuck here, but that's only because I don't want to get caged into a corp contract to get off this rock." "Then why haven't you asked to join my crew?"
Karl froze. he hadn't even considered that, the idea was so obvious and he hadn't even formed the idea that it was a possibility, let alone considered it. Shit, she was right. Holy shit he should do that.
"Look, I know we have only known each other for a grand total of half a day, but I want to lay this out for you. My gut tells me to offer you a place on my crew. I mentioned before that a ship like mine has to be really careful about who we let onboard. Usually a background check is first, then a little fishing around the grey market for any hints at the background check having flaws. Buying up some phished credit transaction records, looking into dox lists, probing through any unofficial sources we can get to, and finally, if we have any suspicions to go off by then, even going so far as to hire an independent to go pry open records at hotels, restaurants, vehicle dealerships, and whatever else we can point out where the person has supposedly been in their professional lifetime. Hell, we even occasionally go and visit a few random relatives and hire a Chiforum empath to take a reading from somewhere out of sight while we ask questions. Emotional supression implants are too pricey even for mega corps to slap them into every relative of a plant, and seriously, it would cause even more suspicion if they had them. The agents themselves never did, they were hypno trained, they really had no concious knowledge of their status till they triggered, but I'm going off on a tangent here. I watched you interact with a lot of people today. The path we took when walking was as erratic as possible, I doubt even a serious dedicated team operating around us could have made it as natural and smooth as it was. You know people here, they know you. You are a genuine local, and with a real reputation across a wide demographic. While I would need to see your history and employment board ratings to know your exact skill set, I can guess it would be pretty solid as a general maintenance tech. I want you on my crew. I don't believe you are a sleeper, and as far as I can tell you are a decent guy. Plus you have already proven an ability to live and work along side a wide variety of species. I made you aware of the risks, I told you a bit about the ship's history and what it can offer you, and I have till tomorrow night left in port while waiting for the outbound stuff to get loaded. You don't have to answer now, but the offer stands till we lift off. The pay rate is competitive, in fact I pay about 30% higher than the average for crew on a trade vessel given our status, accommodations include a room that was outfitted as a luxury liner hotel. Each bunk has a micro fabber and food synth, private bathroom, though you might need to fab human fixtures to replace whatever the last occupant used, full access to the library, and a standard 4 days on 2 off 10 hours a day schedule. Shore leave is always open as long as we are down for longer than a standard day, we have a doctor, a GOOD doctor, modern comms, and a real time galnet uplink node that probably beats your port hub. We have grav plating, everything in the habitat cooridor, engineering, bridge, and main cargo hold is held at galactic standard. The officer quarters and my own are stepped up to earth standard, so a little lower than what you have on this world. We have a gymnasium that can be adjusted on the fly for higher or lower gravity as you desire. There is a fairly large arboretum and hydroponic garden near the spine of the ship, above the crew quarters, a leftover from when that was our main source of oxygen. We kept it going, and some of the trees in there are older than the ship. Vacation time isn't guaranteed, but I make it a point to take a solid couple of weeks, sometimes even a month out of each year to take it easy. Last year we spent two weeks parked over one of the pleasure worlds. I forget the name, it's one of those terraformed projects where the land mass was spread out into hundreds of thousands of tiny islands, each one with a little beach, a hab module, and automated services. Though to be honest I spent most of my time in the casino mega station in orbit. The rules are pretty standard for any ship, though we require every crew member gets certified and maintains regular practice in hand to hand combat basics in both micro gravity and standard G, as well as basic sidearm training in both. Our security officer also offers private voluntary lessons in inter-species combat techniques, training in rifles and a few more exotic things.
I understand if you want to take some time to think about it. You are welcome to stay aboard and walk around, meet the crew, or take your leave and come back later to let me know your decision. I'd appreciate an answer either way before we lift."
"Wow.....again. Also thank you. Shit, you know, the average person would probably take their time, weigh their options. Consider possibilities and..... fuck off with all that I'm in. Where do I sign up?"
They both smiled. Hirami stepped forward and offered her hand, Karl stood and shook it firmly.
"You just did, we can hammer out the paperwork later, I'll drop an official crew opening on the employment board in a bit, accept it when it goes up and it should be arranged to auto confirm you and initiate the employment contract immediately. The terms are all pretty standard like I mentioned before. I'll pass you the routing info for your galbank account to set up wages."
She tapped a few commands into her tab and held it out, Karl put his into receive mode and tapped the back against hers. A tone confirmed the transfer and they both put the tabs away.
"OK, for now I need to get on top of the incoming cargo inspection, and see to some red tape with customs, then I’m hitting the sack. Take your time with whatever business you need to finish up dirt side and be ready to leave tomorrow. The tour was basically done anyway, the other half of the ship is cargo sections. You can head back outside down one of the big ramps at mid ship leading from the main bays on either side, they’re both down right now."
Karl wandered out of the mess and toward the cargo bay, he stood for a moment to appreciate the scale of the ship once more. The cargo bay was huge, and mostly empty space. You could have laid an office building on it’s side in here and had room to spare. His head was swimming, this was what he needed, this was a freakin dream. It might kill him, but if it did, it would be on his terms. Doing something different. And with any luck it would be at least an exciting death. Better than getting electrocuted because he couldn't afford to fab a basic damn tool. Wait. Shit, his tool bag. he better talk to the captain about that. He would recycle the whole thing rather than pass up on this opportunity, but it would suck. A lot of those were hand made, most of it done right there in his apartment with his little homemade electric forge and fabber. Yeah, that will be the first thing he did in the morning. The captain seemed to have a lot of work left today, so it could wait. Right now he needed to do a few things himself.

Have you ever had a customer get really upset? What happened? One guy called back an hour after we finished, screaming his lungs out. "YOU GUYS BROKE MY FUCKING CHAIR AND DIDNT EVEN TELL ME OR TRY TO FIX IT!!" "What's wrong with it?" "ITS FUCKING SNAPPED IN HALF" "the red lazyboy?" "YEA NO SHIT!!" "The backs come off for easier moving, sorry we forgot to re attach it, just line it up and it will fall into place" "OH...well...good to know"
That's kinda funny, you can see why he was pissed but I'm glad it worked out. Yea we had a good laugh. How would we expect to get away with snapping his favourite chair in half without him calling back haha it was a honest mistake but he was a dick about it
We hired movers last year and the first thing the driver says to me (after showing up 2hr late) is that normal tips are $50 per person. We had budgeted $20/person for tips and after the work they did that was more than they deserved. They tried to hold my tv hostage in their truck until they got their tips but told them they weren't getting shit until they brought in my only thing of actual value. Fuck those guys. How the hell do I find movers that aren't shady as fuck? Holy shit. I guess this is why so many people treated me like dirt. Look up reviews of the company, if you can't find any, call them. Just ask them about their insurance policy. That question can break owners or managers. The insurance, at least here, is by weight. It doesn't matter how valuable the item is, we are only legally required to cover its cost by weight. It's nothing, I can't remember numbers, but basically your 5000 flatscreen will only cost us 50. If you fish out that, or some other honest answer, stay on the line. My boss would follow that up by saying some shit like "listen, if we happen to break on of your valuables, we will work something fair out, I have a budget for that. I have no doubt that we will deliver your items with the most care possible" and we did. That bit him in the ass sometimes, but always saved face. Just ask a lot of questions, if they truly want your business, they will answer. If they get annoyed or brush you off, move on.
What is the least amount of items has someone requested you to move? Edit: I just noticed I didn't answer your second question. We did a lot of piano moves where it was just that. Also did some odd stuff like a electrical bed to storage, and people sometimes just hired us to move stuff around in their house that they couldn't.
Who has been your most interesting client? I got my finger pinched underneath a lazyboy chair I was carrying when the foot rest popped out. When I finally got it out, my finger squirted blood all over their carpet. Whoops. Went to the doctor for stitches, lied about where it happened, then went back to work. Another time we were pushing a dresser into the truck and it got jammed on my thumb. Link to m.imgur.com I drove myself to get it popped bam in, then went back to work. I also had a dresser fall on me but I was not injured because I'm a tank. I was waiting for somebody to ask me your third question. I've moved nicklebacks dad, and the head coach of the oilers. I didn't know it was nicklebacks dad until the end of the day. "You like nickelback?" I SAID NO "oh well I'm chads father, want signed pictures?" So I took one and sold it to my friends mom haha.
"You like nickelback?" I SAID NO "oh well I'm chads father, want signed pictures?" So I took one and sold it to my friends mom haha. Easiest 5$ ever made. Truth
Do people give tips? Rich people never tip. Old people, and people who work physical jobs were the only tippers. That being said it was pretty rare, maybe twice a month.
Twice a month?!?!?! I get tipped just about every other job. I've had weeks where damn near everybody tipped. I've had a few good weeks like that, but yea I kid you not. You usually work at the same time he cable guy shows up. I've seen customers tip him for drilling a hole in 10 minutes, but tipped me nothing. I learned very quick to never hope for a tip because I'll be disappointed more then not. I did get a lot of people buying pizza, giving beers, offering water etc. That was more then enough for me!
Seriously no one tipped? I always tipped my movers... At least like $20-40 depending on the job. Yea man tips were very rare. Good for you though, it's nice to know not everyone is cheap! I'm starting to think maybe my boss pocketed a few 20's...
I am also a mover in new zealand and tipping here is amazing i can get 400 a week in tips had a job last week and my crew was tiped 500 before we steped in the door was only a 3 hour job I don't know if I should be happy for you, or sad for myself...haha. That's awesome!
What would you recommend as an appropriate tip? Flat amount or %? If you want to tip I would say flat amount. Maybe 10 bucks for a small job, 20 for a 8+ hour move. Only tip if you feel they earned it though, don't worry about breaking some unspoken law if they are dicks or mess up a bunch.
That doesn't make sense to me. Did your boss deal with the customers while you wait in the truck? I've done unloads and the cable guy was there. Rarely have I had to work around him though. Yea I would clean the truck while he squared up. I would always talk with the customers as soon as I finish, and go through the house with them. That would be when I would give the tip..but you have me thinking he probably pocketed some. The ratio of nice people to tips seem unbalanced now that I look back at it...The cable guy always seemed to be in our way. Alway leaving boots in the middle of the doorway haha and that cable guy probably has come across more asshole movers then I have. It felt like a unspoken rivalry hah.
I always feel like half a man, or less when movers are picking up refrigerators that I struggle to move an inch. Has a woman ever made fun of her husband's physical inadequacy in front of him? Haha yes there was this adorable older couple where the wife was teasing her husband. It was all in good fun, but it could have been taken wrong. "Oh Gary you only wish you were as strong as those lads" "I could lift that" "oh Gary you couldn't lift that 30 years ago, let alone today" hahaha.
Have there ever been any moving jobs where you said, "no, not moving that." Also, do you lift bro? There was one mattress that stunk of foul death. It had a weird yellow and green colour stained onto it. It was also a king, so you have to bury yourself in it to get them around stairs that turn 180. I didn't feel like getting HIV so I refused to touch it. There was also a homemade gun safe a guy built, which had loaded guns in it. He argued with us that there is no danger, but web he admitted he's not sure if the safeties are on, that was is. We also moved a hoarder but we actually moved her so I guess it doesn't count. Fuck that was gross tho
Hoarder? So if the TV show is right, you moved about 70 dead cats and two tons of expired food? That's totally ridiculous...it was more like 33 dead cats and 4 flats of expired kraft dinner, let's be real here.
kraft dinner. Canadian alert. That's aboot right eh.
What's the most insulting experience you had as a mover? One guys kid was watching us struggle to get a fridge upstairs. He comes up to his kid, picks him up, and says to us "I bet you wish you studied harder now am I right?" How about I'm working this god damn job to save for my schooling. My boss supports his wife with 3 kids and he's the only working one. I hate how much people looked down on me.
What is the strangest thing you have ever seen in someone's house? I was finishing up a bedroom in the basement, only had the mattress and dresser left. When I ran downstairs to grab it, I saw something underneath the box spring. A little glass dildo. I run upstairs to grab my boss to show him, and I pass by the customer. She asked me "have you gotten everything out of my sons room downstairs?" WTF gross so my boss picks it up with vice grips and puts it in the dresser. Didn't want to ruin moms day. When we are carrying the dresser at the new place, the sons there. He hears this little glass thing rolling around in his dresser. His face went blood red. Also one customer had a holder for her kitchen knifes just loose in her kitchen. It was a figure of a small baby, with a knife going through the head, two through the eyes, one through the mouth, and one through the neck. The strangest thing was that everything was completely normal.
What are the strangest warnings (besides the don't drink the water) you have ever received before starting a job? Did you have to do cross-state moves? And where/ how long? Good question! We did a move in a seniors home one time. While we were working, a nurse lady came up to me and said "hey can you just keep a eyes on the door? Some people try to escape" WTF. I'm Canadian, the farthest move I did was from Edmonton, AB to Victoria island, BC. Those were the best, do half a job then hit the road. I would have my computer and watch movies while getting paid. Boss pays for hotels and food too. Driving the mountains in a truck at night is kinda sketchy. If I was not feeding my boss 5 hour energies, we probably would be dead, no joke. Long moves were the best, get paid for 2-4 days with only one load and unload!
Have you had an crazy ex stories? or divorce moving catastrophes? I saw a lot of divorces. Usually only one of the couple is there when we are. You can tell if it's a divorce if there is one guy home, a bunch of nice furniture and decorations...but we only take the big screen and a couch haha. One move we did, the lady said her husband cheated on her, and she's putting his stuff in storage. She had to work so she gave use a quick outline of what goes, then left. As we were clearly moving only this guys stuff out, he shows up. He starts freaking out when he sees his shit in our truck. He started to walk up the ramp, so I blocked him. It's your stuff, but it's my truck, and I'm not going to be responsible when you rip something down and killyourself. I told him he should call his wife. "EX WIFE" he shouted lol. After a heated phone call, his ego was checked. He politely asked if he could have a look in the truck to make sure she's not pawning off all the junk on him. I let him, he accepted what was happening, and left. My boss told me a story where one angry EX showed up, blocked his truck, and started makin threats while holding a shotgun. My boss locked the truck and called the cops lol.
That is one smart boss! thanks for answering so many questions! No problem! I will answer every question this thread ever gets hah.
Who was the worst customer? We moved a hoarder one time. Her power lines were sagging so close to her house, we couldn't get the truck close, so it was already extra shitty. We go inside and it looked like a bomb went off. First thing she says is "don't drink water from the tap, or collected some drinking water in this (gross ass) jug". The stuff she wanted moved, was literally piled up in the Center of the room. Each room was like that. Rust everywhere, stepping hazards, mice running around, flies in your face. She also smoked in the house the whole time which is another awesome thing people do. Words cannot describe how gross that house was. To top it all off, she wanted a discount because she overheard us complain about the mess. Some people are ridiculous.
Were you allowed to fire that customer? We fuckin should have lol.
Oh, i so would have.. man.. thats a health hazard!! Yea we had to actually wash the inside of the truck after that one. I went to sweep it out and everything kinda just...smeared. My boss said next time we are turning around if we see anything close to that again. I think he really needed the money lol.
Nobody is that desperate lol. I think the fact we did the job speaks for itself.
What is the hardest part of having a job that is 100% physical labor? Probably how little most people appreciated how hard I worked for them. I worked hard- non stop- so we could finish as early as possible. Most people don't understand how hard it is to safely move an entire household without damages. You would rarely get thanked for not screwing up, like perfection is expected. To bust your ass all day, only for the customer to be steaming mad about a small scratch on his wall he could fix for $1, is hard. Or when peoples water is already turned off. I always brought water but relied on filling it up at the customers house cuz I drink so much.
Have you ever thought of fabricating some sort of easement device to make moving easier? I.E. moving a big item, piano, bed, desk, etc. Think smarter not harder sorta thing. How much can you deadlift? :P. Honestly besides straight up pulleys and 4-wheeler dollies, there isn't much to fabricate. Me and my boss discussed this a lot. There are just too many X factors at every house that would prevent one fabrication from being applicable to everything. Besides some sort of exoskeleton. We thought of a design of a collapsable conveyer belt for boxes, but I doubt it would work IRL lol. There is a machine I saw that can move a piano with just one person operating it...but only to places with bigass spaces for it, wouldn't work in houses. I don't know how much I can deadlift because I never went to the gym haha. I could handle big tvs by myself. Customers would come running over when they see me and I would have to say "I got it" like 100 times. Never lift beyond your capability, you wont last long.
Where do people try to hide the sex toys? I saw a surprisingly small amount of sex toys. I didn't snoop through people's stuff so I probably unknowingly moved a lot. The people who do have them always seem to forget to check behind dressers. Just like when you were kids, your toys get forgotten down there.
Are you also a shaker? What.
A mover and a shaker. A business person who gets things done. ( too obscure?) Oh I see what you mean. I'm really good at talking to people and knowing what they want to hear...but I've always enjoyed working with my hands. I enjoy the fulfillment you feel after you work your ass off. Makes me think I earned my beer haha.
I read you're saving up for school. What do you want to study and what field would you like to find a job in the future? :) P.S. It's awesome you're replying to all the questions! :) I'm going to be a welder. I enjoyed it a lot in high school and the money is there, so why not haha. I have some buddies in the field already too. I'm hoping to get my own truck so I can contract. It's like printing money. Hey no problem, isn't that what these things are for? ;)
Fun AMA, How many people actually have nice well put together stylist homes? I would say like 60%. You have exceptions though, I've moved this women who's husbands own casinos. Her house was like a movie. There was construction going on but they had the all stone deck with big pillars and lion statues and such. The rock on this ladies hand was the size of a small meteor! Also moved some people who had secret rooms, library's with sliding ladders on the shelfs, designer bathrooms, man caves and more.
Did you ever have clients who broke down in tears when they saw you moving a sentimental object? Yes one lady had a small 2 foot angel statue in memory of her grandma who just passed away. She teared up when she asked us to be careful with it...which was not easy by the way. We spent extra time wrapping an padding the shit out of it after that.
How often do people say I don't need this item in my new place do you want it? All the time, but it's usually junk. I took three broken tvs.. I have gotten a few good things. Got a small popcorn machine movie theatre style. It had matching popcorn cups too. It worked for a bit lol. Got a glass oilers nightstand, but I'm not into hockey. Everyone has a couch or a bed or a chair they want to pawn off on you. If they don't want it for some reason, you shouldn't want it. That "I have no room" line is usually a lie haha.
Am I supposed to tip the movers??? I've never know the answer to this question. You tip them if you think they deserve it. It's not a job where the real money should come from the tips. It's not like how you should tip your waitress, in my opinion at least. If you see the guys working hard and they are friendly, a tip really makes them feel rewarded. If they are lazy and are making less-then-honest mistakes, don't feel bad about not tipping.
What is the grossest thing you have encountered over the years? I would say the hoarders house, but ill give you another answer. I had to clear out this guys shed, it had tires in it. The tires had spiders, isopods, ants, and other bugs ALL OVER IT. I'm a big guy, you would have laughed at how squeamish I was getting those tires. I still feel the webs in between my fingers.
What's the average people tend to have your type of job before they have to quit do to injury? Well most people who get into the moving business don't last a week, let alone long enough to be injured. There was a football guy my boss hired and he quit the same day lol. He stopped hiring people after that, me and him were all anybody would need. A third person typically just gets in the way when moving a single object (hot tubs excluded). However, you have people like my boss, who started the company and have been moving for 20 years. I can't believe that old man kept up with me. His pace would slow near the end but he still blew me away with what he could do. His hands were like sandpaper. Whenever I thought something was heavy, I remembered he's on the other end, and id be fine haha. You learn very quickly to lift properly. Doing anything for too long will eventually cause strain. It's not as hard on the back as everyone thinks, as long as you lift correctly!
Edit: Still blew me away. Not "Still blew me anyway" hahaha that's a autocorrect almost worth not fixing.
Whats the most messed up thing you moved? One guy had a life-size butler mannequin statue. The face was super weird, it was trying to be funny, but was more so creepy. He was holding a silver platter with a shoe on it. The guy said he uses the mannequin to show off his favourite shoe at the time. He had a name for it, and kept it in front of a mirror because he was "vain". I swear that thing would lock eyes with you in the truck. I didn't need to, but I wrapped pads all over his face so I didn't have that face poking through when I went to unload hah I never said anything because I'm pretty sure he had some issues, but it was still strange none the less.
I was expecting someone else! But it kinda made my day so take my upvote. Haha there was also a freezer we had to move one time. It was full of game meat, and we needed to get it on its side to get it out. So we grab a box and start packing the food. I came across a package small enough to fit in your hand...it said "vagina lips '04". The other meat was deer so...deer vagina lips? Any idea what the hell that would be doing in there? The family was from Poland if that helps...
Now it's getting intresting! Please continue! :D. I found a ladies missing cat she was missing for 2 days inside a treadmill. She asks us to keep a eye out for her before we started. I had to take the arms off the treadmill because it came down there disassembled and in a box. The wires go down through one arm into the base of the treadmill, so I had to unhook it. When I was taking the faceplate off the base, sure enough, there was this little kitten chillin in there. I went to grab it and it ran upstairs. Brownie points. Now I gotta save some stuff for other people ;) stay tuned hah
Poor me :( Ok well looks like no more questions are coming in so I will give you another story. This one is kind of gross, fair warning. One time I was late for work, I didn't get to do my morning routine. Including my morning shit. On the way to work, the grumbling stopped so I thought I was fine. Big mistake. About a hour into the job, the bubble guts hit me. I didn't want to shit in this persons house, they were always walking around so I knew they would notice. So I see a chance when they are busy, and I run downstairs to poop. I filled that toilet in 20 seconds flat. Wipe my ass and flush. It didn't flush. It started backing up. Panic hits me, I grab a plunger. I managed to fix it before a overflow. Phew. Leave the bathroom and both customers, and my boss, are standing outside the bathroom chuckling. All I said was "it's ok nothing broke". more chuckling. FML haha.
You seem to have an intresting job. If I would have lived near your company and I would move I would call your company to move and I would want you as a mover :p. Are there any embarresing stories for the costumer? Haha one job had a lot of expensive pictures. We wrap the shit out of pictures, and usually keep them wrapped until we finish. These customer were too excited. They stopped me at the door when I had something light, and they would take it from me. I told him it's fine but thanks, he insisted on it. This included pictures. I was bringing in one without a glass cover. He took it from me and started opening it. He started talking about how expensive and unique that this painting was. As he was taking it upstairs, he tripped. He fell on top of his painting, destroying it. He left the painting there, and walked downstairs. He was not waiting at the door anymore hah poor guy shoulda just let us do our thing.
Easiest job you have ever had as a mover? In a apartment, moving 4 suites down. We rolled everything on dollies haha.
Have you ever had an experience where you almost died/got hurt while moving something? We had to move a cast iron fire place down a set of stairs that turn 180 degrees. Don't know the exact weight, but if you know cast iron, imagine a 3 foot tall fire place lol. We had it strapped to a piano sled, and all padded up. The only part sticking out were the feet. I was going backwards down the stairs. When it went past the tipping point, I found out I was not Hercules. It came flying down the stairs, I managed to keep my balance, but it pinned me against the wall at the turn. Two feet went through the wall, and were about one inch from both sides of my stomach. That would have stabbed me no doubt. Another time we were moving a big entertainment unit upstairs. The stairs came up to a wall, with a room on either side. So the person at the top (my boss) needs to lift his end up. The person at the bottom has to stabilize and lift it when it hits the tipping point to get it on its side. He didn't communicate when he was lifting. Luckily I had enough strength to catch it last second. If I was ANY weaker, it would have fallen ontop of me and took me down the stairs with it.
Edit: get it on ITs side, not MY side lol.
What does your name exactly mean? Everything of mine is bigger then yours...haha.
Edit: the PFFF is me blowing air in a unimpressed fashion. I meant to put PFFT lol.
I'm not technically, but my uncle is a contractor so he calls me up if he ever needs extra help. That was maybe a week of working with him when that happened though. Ah I see. You are his lifesaver then, I can appreciate how valuable a extra hand can be, it would have gotten us out of a lot of jams lol good on you.
Moreover, is tipping something that is expected? Edit: Phrasing so I sound less like a jackass. Edit 2: So I sound less like a hookd on fonix gwaduaet. One customer tipped us 10 bucks and said "I was not sure if you are supposed to tip movers, so I googled it. It said if there are stairs involved, then you tip them" I told her I've had some crazy hard days with no stairs, and thanked her. I never expected a tip, but if your grabbing a coffee or lunch, offering makes me want to work harder for you.
I worked as a mover for a few months during school. I was only tipped once, but people would buy us coffee semi-regularly ... usually the same people who had everything organized and hassle free when we got there. Go figure. Yea I loved it when people prepared. I mean, I have no problem if you want to pay me to take apart your bed, unhook your electronics, clear off your furniture etc...but from a customers stand point, those are really easy things that can save you money! I don't know how some parents had 4 able bodied teenagers in the house, but let them sit around. Again, it's my job so it never bugged me, but from a parents stand point? That's free labour right there!
If you could rewind time to 6 years ago, would you of still been a mover or consider doing something else? No way bro, I have so many stories to tell. Not to mention my back and triceps are waaay to OP.
No offence but are you tall, skinny and amped up on uppers for most of the day followed by 6 beers later in the night, followed by 4 hours of sleep before you start work the next day? I'm tall, with a belly but a jacked upper frame and tree trunks for legs. I never worked while on any drugs, not even pot. The only thing I did on the job was have beers with the customers when we finished if they offered. I WOULD have six beers SOME night, but still usually passed out within a hour or two of getting home. Then I would sleep like a baby. Hard to believe right? We charged more because we gave a shit about our work. That's why people on a smaller budget would still use us. Nothing but good reviews.
Myy buddy worked for a few companies and everyone was as I described, strong like bull and worked their asses off. Yea I mean I did have some nights I probably drank too much. I never missed a day of work though. If I was sick or hurt, I would come in and just do what I can. Even if it's just taking light boxes. It was just me and my boss so if I didn't show up, the job didn't get done. I have a killer work ethic because of moving.
What kind of company did you work for? Was it an e-move company? Naw it was a little company my boss started after he got his business degree. I was the only employee, and I got paid in cash weekly. It was better money then I could make at any big shot moving company. He even let me drive the truck out in a never busy road. It was a stick, and the weight was a lot to get used to!
Man you should have started your own. They are easy as hell to start and you don't even need a truck. I was actually talking to my boss about taking over park moving. I was 18 at the time and already looking at owning a business lol. However after a few discussions, I found out he was in some financial problems. They weren't business related but they affected the business. He wanted way too much. He was proof you can have a house, put three kids through school and hockey, go on vacation twice a year, with only one moving truck. I know the money is there if I played my cards right. I just don't feel like working that hard my whole life haha. On top of the physical side, it's a super stressful business. I'm sure my boss is going to look like a pretzel when he's 60+. I'm glad had the job, don't get me wrong, but life long career? No thanks haha.
Fuck. I love it. I'd argue that keeping active keeps you young. That's true, but we weren't exactly just going for a little jog everyday haha. 5-6 days a week with 6-12 hour moves will catch up to you pretty quick!
What was the worst injury you had at the job? I've already discussed a few injuries in my earlier replies, check them out. There are a few more times where I was hurt however lol. When I first started, there was another guy working with my boss. He was such a burn out. When we were carrying the ramp to the front steps, I was going backwards. It was winter, and he's basically jogging so I have to match his pace. As I'm telling him to slow down, he ran me into a bunch of rocks. I fell backwards, head hit the concrete. I was pretty dizzy and had to sit down for awhile before I could walk straight. The ramp also fell into my guy and left a nasty bruise. The other guy didn't even understand how that was his fault! He's lucky I didn't get hurt, or feel the need to hurt him haha. I always communicate a lot when I'm carrying something with someone. Eventually you don't have to because you know what each other is doing. Pretty soon it was just me and my boss haha.
In case you're curious, this is in NYC, and the apartment requiring the COI was a fancy one in Manhattan. Oh I see, thanks for the insight. It's interesting to know how stuff works in other areas.
Have you ever told someone you wouldn't move their stuff because it was too disgusting? I've told customers that certain items were to dirty to take, but never a whole move. We COULD and SHOULD have not moved this hoarder one time, but whatever lol. I wouldn't move anything that was suspiciously wet, had a weird coloured stain, or smelt foul. I never felt bad doing it either, it's not fair to make movers grab your kids piss and shit stained mattress, do your kids a favour and throw it out!!
What is the most fucked up shit you saw in a person's house? The condition of this little girls room. The house was a mess all over, but even their small child's room was gross. Band aids and Kleenex everywhere, thick dust everywhere, dirty broken toys, bug carcasses, dirty mattress...I regret not calling CPS on that person. It was so bad I would classify her room as a hazard. Pretty sad stuff to see.
What is the nastiest thing you ever found in a house? This one guy had two pitbulls. He let them, or refused to clean, shit in the basement. There were at least 4 distinct smells of shit in the basement. We lay carpets down usually, but if that's how your floors are, forget it. I'm not bringing a shit carpet to the next house!
How many sex toys does the average household have? 69.
