The Joker isn't the greatest villain of all time

I always hear about how joker is the best villain ever and its rarely debated as to it being wrong and this is a pretty unpopular opinion. People have even gone far enough to put inspiring quotes that the joker never said with pictures of him. No I dont think the joker cares if you invest in stocks and dump your girlfriend. People have projected an image of the joker that they believe is some confident , wise and confident lone wolf . They think that Heath Ledgers portrayal is what the character is supposed to be .
But I never see why a guy who dresses like a clown and does stupid things for the hell of it can be considered the greatest villain. Hes got no real motivation and hes often regarded as pure anarchy or just the embodiment of chaos. Why did he blow up the hospital? Because he's crazy duh! He never even has a clear motivation. 1. Hes doing it because hes obsessed with batman 2. Hes smart to the point of insanity 3. He fell in a pool of acid which messed up his brain (which would somehow be the most reasonable explanation) 4. He had a bad day which turned him psychotic. I've had tons of bad days, when does my hair turn green?
Hes more archetype then well thought out villain and is just a mystery that's what makes him interesting and dc knows it. They never bother to give him a good origin. Hes not even the slightest bit believable because what he suffers from isnt any type of known mental illness and no hes not a psychopath. He's not a master manipulator because I doubt anyone would follow a crazy clown around and do what he wants no matter how charismatic. In real life he would shot if he pulled the shit he does around criminals
And dont get me started on Harley Quinn...

[REQ] looking for a potential tattoo piece with lots of artistic interpretation openness

This is my preliminary search for a piece I would love to have inked on myself. As such I am first looking for sketch work, before I consider having a full-blown art piece made.
I realize tattoo art typically works differently than wall/postephoto art does.
I would like this art to be realistic or semi realistic, it can have fantastical elements.
It's something of a crossover between a few characters/movies.
Cheshire cat (the live action, teal and gray one) Cheshire cat (American McGee's Alice video game) Joker (the Heath Ledger version from The Dark Knight)
Optional quote(s) that could be added/included:
"Why so serious?" "Were all mad here" Others would be potentially discussable.
How I came to want this if it helps for some design inspiration:
I've like Alice in Wonderland for a long time, cheshire cat is my favorite. Teal is my favorite color. As for the video game cat, I like the style, it's dark and unique as far as cheshire cat goes. I also really like Batman, in particular the Dark Knight rendition. One time I watched the film and the scene where Joker refers to himself as a "dog chasing cars" seemed to click for me.
In essence it's kind of the dog vs cat parallel, and the general lack of sanity, also the large smiles on the characters.
I'm really hoping to get a feel for what other people come up with for these characters and how to fit them into one piece.
TLDR: want sketch art of cheshire cat (live action teal/gray), cheshire cat (American McGee's alice video game), and Joker (heath ledger version) all into one image, preferably mixed together in some way for possible tattoo piece to go on my body. Willing to pay of course, but not huge amounts please (under about $5 usd).

Production timeline of a film: The Dark Knight (2008)

edit: Thank you for the gold kind stranger!
Hi folks, thanks to the great response to my previous post for Batman Begins, I've decided the logical choice for the next post to be for the sequel.
I was originally going to do The Lord of the Rings trilogy but the vast amount of information will probably keep me reading up on it throughout the rest of the month. It's a wildly interesting read nevertheless.
Once again, many thanks to Jett from batman-on-film.com for his outstanding updates throughout the years. Let's get on to it...
Post Batman Begins
2005
Jun: Batman Begins is released to both critical and commercial success. Warner Bros. is reportedly "thrilled" by its reception and immediately greenlights a sequel to the reboot. Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman all are signed to 3 picture deals starting with 'Begins'. Warner also signs its writer David Goyer to pen the story immediately after the second week of its release. The only question?: Will Christopher Nolan be back?
It may seem to be a given, but Nolan has a fair share of projects he'd like to work on including his adaptation of the Christopher Priest novel 'The Prestige', which will reportedly star Jude Law. He is also hoping to resurrect his Howard Hughes project now that Scorsese's 'The Aviator' has been away from theaters.
Warner Bros. would love to have a sequel ready for release by summer of 2007, but that would mean fast tracking the project, echoing the two year journey from Batman Forever (1995) to the disastrous Batman & Robin (1997). In Warner's mind, Nolan did his job in rebooting a tired franchise in 8 years and delivered a film that will not easily be topped. The question that remains will be if Warner Bros. can be patient for Nolan to return to the franchise even if it takes a few years longer than a sequel would normally be made?
'Begins' sets an Imax release 5 day record, which could pique the interest of motion picture studios to release their tentpole films in Imax formats in the near future.
July: Warner Bros. President Alan Horn gives an interview with Fox News(http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,162604,00.html), confirming the next film(s) will stay in tone with Batman Begins, alleviating fans fears among reports/rumors the studio is looking to go lighter in tone a la the previous films.
"Batman Begins," he said, had to be "about Batman's dark side, about the Dark Knight. We couldn't go back to what had happened before." He meant to "Batman Forever" (1995, starring Val Kilmer) and "Batman and Robin" (1997, with George Clooney). "They were terrible," he said. "But we're also the studio that made 'Catwoman' and 'Pluto Nash,'" he said with a chuckle. "Everybody makes mistakes."
Rumors and message board speculation aplenty as Katie Holmes is reportedly not returning for the sequel and Steve Carell's name is added to the list of "Joker candidates", joining Sean Penn, Paul Bettany, Johnny Depp, Crispin Glover, and Lachy Hulme to the 'wishlist' made by fans across the net.
August: Some newsworthy bits make the rounds as Cillian Murphy gives his first interview on the sequel and if he has been contacted about appearing as the Scarecrow again (he has not heard anything yet).
Steve Carell speaks out on the rumors of his involvement as the Joker.
"I just heard that for the first time this morning and I had no… Yeah! That would be hilar - I would love to do that! But I doubt that it's true. (Laughs) ... No, he's [possibly Charles Roven] never said anything about that, so I think that's probably completely fabricated. But I love it. I love the rumor. That would be cool. (laughs)"
AiCN reports Christopher Nolan's next film will undoubtedly be 'The Prestige', which will either have him not returning to do the sequel to 'Begins' or the studio would wait another year for him to finish work on this film.
Producer Charles Roven gives a brief statement to the Chicago Sun Times that the sequel will return to Chicago as the backdrop to Gotham City.
Will Batman return to Chicago to shoot on location for a proposed sequel to "Batman Begins," starring Christian Bale again as the Caped Crusader? Save a parking spot for the Batmobile on Lower Wacker. "We're definitely talking about doing another Batman," says producer Chuck Roven. "And we love Chicago...Chicago was fantastic to us last time."
Sep: Famed Batman writer Frank Miller, which Begins was heavily influenced by his 'Year One' arc, [gave his opinion](www.nowplayingmag.com/content/view/2116/2/) on 'Batman Begins'.
"I totally thought they did a damned good job [on that movie]," says Miller. "It was the first 'Batman' movie I've genuinely liked. I sat there, I watched it, and I came out of there going, 'Well done, man.' Sure, they used my stuff – they used everybody's stuff, but they used my stuff a lot – but they did it well, and that's all I care about. It was Batman. What I mean by that is, I thought the character was true. You understand, when I work on a character, I have a very, very hard time seeing anybody else's interpretation. I get very possessive. But when I went out to see this thing, I said, 'This is a pretty cool Batman.' I wasn't sitting there going, 'This is a merchandising tool.' I felt like it really had heart and substance, and Christian Bale with no doubt performed the best Batman I have ever seen."
Bloody-disgusting.com reports Crispin Glover shot down rumors of his involvement as a potential Joker candidate with Warner Bros.
"The rumors that he will play the Joker in the next Batman were also shot down. According to Crispin, they are strictly internet based but he would love the opportunity to do it. He hopes that the buzz might rub off on the studio."
Sequel title rumors are thrown around heavily revolving around 3 potential titles: 'Batman Attacks', 'Batman Strikes', and 'Batman Escalation'. All 3 are met with lukewarm responses from the fan community.
Oct: "The Prestige" is officially announce as Christopher Nolan's next film and will star his 'Begins' star Christian Bale, as well as Wolverine from the X-Men franchise, Hugh Jackman as rival magicians. This all but confirms that Nolan will return to work on the sequel after this film as Bale would not have signed on without Warner Bros.' approval knowing they would have to film the sequel the same time if the project was fast-tracked. Warner is making a smart business decision by waiting for the creative minds to move on their own pace.
THR quotes Warner exec Jeff Robinov as saying "Chris Nolan is going to come in and tell us what the next 'Batman' will be today".
Christopher Nolan speaks with IGN filmforce about the sequel as well as about.com
Two villians, or just The Joker? "I wouldn’t want to talk about any specifics per se. All I can really say is it’s a film we’re talking about doing." Will WB make the same mistakes with this series that they did with the last one? "Well, to me it’s more about the filmmakers and their collaboration with the studio. I don’t think you can necessarily lay all the blame at the feet of the studio or all the blame at the feet of the filmmakers. With franchise properties, with the idea of sequels, as I see it, the only reason to do a sequel is to do something better than the film you’ve made before. That’s the reason you have to be doing it, with that kind of intention. That’s the only way in which I would enter into the process." Can Robin be used without dumbing down the thing? "Possibly, but I can’t really talk about specifics."
Boxofficemojo has another interview with Nolan about the sequel.
"I can't talk about it. These are very early days. I'm going to do THE PRESTIGE first—about a couple of magicians who become involved in sabotaging each other acts, set in turn of the century London—and then we'll be looking at doing a BATMAN picture. Batman is positive, but I believe that, in the first couple of years, he's going to find an increasingly negative response from society, because the truth is that, when you have a powerful, negative city like Gotham, it didn't become corrupt by accident, and those entrenched people are going to respond very vigorously."
Dec: Christian Bale breaks his silence on the sequel and talks about Batman to IFMagazine.
"It's all that kind of deal where I'll get it in the head if I talked," laughs Bale.
One thing Bale was extremely pleased with was the support fans gave him and director Christopher Nolan’s dark, art-house-like superhero film and hopes the next film will continue in that vein.
"We know now that people have supported what we achieved," admits the actor. "I have to say though that I always like the idea of not knowing if people are going to like it and then that gives me a certain drive to improve what I believe the correct way of bringing the character about. I like the slightly self-destructive notion of like, 'You know what, I'm going to do this regardless and if people don't like it then well I'm out. That's it.' I'm kind of enjoying that possibility and that will always be there, but we can't help that recognize that we're probably on slightly safer ground now with the second one. But in doing that there's the great danger of becoming too comfortable and obviously with the second one you have to outdo the first one."
The key for Bale is progressing with the character and story.
"You have to keep on moving forward and pressing on and finding new and impressive character points and storylines, but I've got real confidence," says Bale. "I think that Chris is such a smart man and when I did finally get into the game I would have certain questions about why he was doing something and not quite understanding it. He would explain it to me and it would be like, 'Now that he's said it's so obvious. That really works. Yeah.' So I have great faith in him that he will be pulling something out of the hat that will be even better than the first one."
2006
Jan: USAToday does an interview with Adrien Brody where the actor essentially throws his name into the Joker hat.
"I watched BATMAN BEGINS," said the actor when asked what movie he last watched. "I thought it was really cool. I would love to play The Joker. I think he would be deformed and creepier."
Feb: Variety reports David Goyer has written a treatment for the sequel and Jonathan Nolan, brother of the director's, will pen the screenplay.
Warner Bros. Pictures is already planning the next installments to “Batman Begins” and “Superman Returns,” with respective helmers Christopher Nolan and Bryan Singer in line to return.
Neither director’s deal is closed; the studio has hired Jonah Nolan — Christopher’s brother — to pen the screenplay for the untitled “Batman” project. Studio has options on “Batman Begins” star Christian Bale and “Superman Returns” star Brandon Routh.
Next installment in the Caped Crusader franchise is further along in the process since “Batman Begins” was released last summer; Singer’s “Superman Returns,” now in post, doesn’t bow until June 30.
It’s not clear when the “Batman Begins” sequel would begin shooting, although it would likely start production and be released before the “Superman” sequel.
Christopher Nolan is presently shooting “The Prestige,” a Disney release that Jonah Nolan scripted from a Christopher Priest novel.
“Batman Begins” co-writers David Goyer and Christopher Nolan wrote a treatment for the sequel. Goyer, who recently completed “The Invisible” for Touchstone, also is set to write and direct “The Flash” for Warners.
Mar: Actor Tom Wilkenson speaks to Empire Magazine about his character from Begins and if he is interested in returning for the sequel.
"I rather liked him [Falcone]. I kind of thought it was fun to play...I thought it was a great role. [As far as returning for the sequel], my character’s mad and possibly dead so I don’t think so."
Jun: Robin Williams throws his hat into the Joker mix as well. Speaking to IGN UK: "Oh God, I'd love to do that one. Well, you want to do a different Joker. You know, if they do 'Arkham Asylum,' it would be amazing. 'Arkham Asylum' is one of the greatest, nastiest comic books ever."
Jul: In an interview with Turner Classic Movies, Michael Caine lets slip of the villain of the sequel.
"...there are three pictures I want to do, small parts. One [Children of Men, released September 2006] is with Alfonso Cuaron who directed Y tu Mama Tambien, I wanted to work with him and then Christopher Nolan who directed Batman is doing a smaller film called The Prestige about magicians and it’s very interesting. And we’re going to make The Joker next year."
July 20th 2006: During Comic-Con in San Diego, LatinoReview breaks the news of the coveted role of the Joker going to Heath Ledger. Also noted is the production title of the sequel will be 'Rory's First Kiss'.
July 20 - July 23: The internet freaks out.
August 1st, 2006: Warner Bros. sends out a press release regarding the casting and the title for the sequel to 'Begins'.
As a follow up to last year’s blockbuster Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Dark Knight, written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan. Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. The announcements were made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.
Christopher Nolan revamped the Batman franchise in 2005 with the immensely successful Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale in the title role, which chronicled the early years of the superhero. Nolan first garnered attention from critics and fans in 2000 with the groundbreaking drama Memento, which he wrote and directed. He went on to direct the thriller Insomnia, starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, and recently wrapped production on The Prestige, with Hugh Jackman and Bale.
Bale was most recently seen in the ensemble cast of Terrence Malick’s The New World. His other credits include Little Women, Portrait of a Lady, Metroland, American Psycho, Laurel Canyon and Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun, which was his first starring role.
Ledger most recently earned Oscar Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award nominations and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the award-winning drama Brokeback Mountain. His other credits include Casanova, Monster’s Ball, Lords of Dogtown, The Brothers Grimm and The Patriot.
“Chris’ unique vision is what made Batman Begins such an outstanding film and we could not imagine anyone else at the helm of The Dark Knight,” said Robinov. “We also can’t wait to see two such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with each other as Batman and The Joker.” “I'm excited to continue the story we started with Batman Begins,” added Nolan. “Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale’s Batman is going to be incredible.”
Production is set to begin on The Dark Knight in early 2007.
Pre-Production
Sep: David Goyer gives a brief update on the project to CBR news.
How about THE DARK KNIGHT? Chris Nolan's finished with THE PRESTIGE and Heath Ledger has been cast as the Joker. I'm guessing the two of you and screenwriter Jonathan Nolan will be getting together pretty soon?
“That's already been done.”
Has the story already been completely worked out?
“It's gone into Jonathan's hands and it's now out of Jonathan's hands and now in Chris' hands.”
Have you had a chance to look over the final product and make some additional suggestions?
“Yup. It's really further along than people may think.”
Heath Ledger finally breaks his silence after being cast as the iconic Joker to the Toronto Star newspaper.
"It's definitely going to stump people. I think it'll be more along the lines of how the Joker was meant to be in the comics, darker and more sinister."
“I wouldn't have thought of me, either. But it's obviously not going to be what Jack Nicholson did. It's going to be more nuanced and dark and more along the lines of A Clockwork Orange kind of feel. Which is, I think, what the comic book was after: less about his laugh and more about his eyes.”
"I actually hate comic book movies, like f**ing hate them, they just bore me sh*less and they're just dumb. But I thought what Chris Nolan did with [BATMAN BEGINS] was actually really good, really well directed, and Christian Bale was really great in it."
"He's going to be really sinister and it's going to be less about his laugh and his pranks and more about just him being a just a f***ing sinister guy."
[Asked if he decides to do a big movie like this, because of agent pressure.] "I'm sure they're super happy that I'm doing this [THE DARK KNIGHT], because this is the first time I've really kind of taken something like that, so they're over the moon. But I think it's just going to be a really fun experience, and I love to dress up and wear a mask."
[How will his Joker look?] "I've seen a few interesting designs on the look and I think that it's going to look pretty cool."
"When he explained to me the angle he wanted to take, I was like, 'Yeah, I could do that,'" Ledger says. "[Nolan's] going to make it a lot more sinister, and we've got a little plan for him, but it's exciting. Any opportunity to don a mask is always exciting to me."
[BATMAN (1989)] was dominated by Jack Nicholson's acclaimed performance as the psychotic villain, but Ledger isn't intimidated by his predecessor's turn.
"I love, love, love what Nicholson did," Ledger says. "[But] his performance was catering to the style of directing the movie was made under. It was a Tim Burton film. It wasn't Chris Nolan."
Oct: During a Q&A for 'The Prestige', Nolan answers briefly about questions regarding 'The Dark Knight'.
Nov: Composer Hans Zimmer gives an interview to soundtrack.net on what we can expect for the next film music wise.
You mentioned before that you were probably going to be working on The Dark Knight, but it's not certain... "Nothing is ever certain. They haven't even finished the script yet."
Assuming you do it, though, would you be able pull James Newton Howard back in? "Absolutely! I should say we are doing Batman. I wouldn't leave home without him!"
In the score to the first film, the main "Batman" theme only shows up towards the end, kind of like a springboard for the second film... "Absolutely, that's the whole idea. It's Batman Begins! There's a whole theme that's written and on purpose not in the movie. We were basically betting that this movie might work out alright and there would be another one, so we wanted the character to develop. He hasn't earned that theme yet!"
Dec: According to the Chicago Tribune, Warner Bros. has committed to shooting 'The Dark Knight' in Chicago for its Gotham City portions a la 'Begins'.

Jan: Variety breaks the news that Katie Holmes will not return as Rachel Dawes and will instead star in the film 'Mad Money' with Queen Latifah. What will happen with the character remains to be seen.
Feb: LA Daily News reports Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight' will begin filming in April of this year.
THR and Variety report Aaron Eckhart has won the role of Harvey Dent in the upcoming film. Maggie Gyllenhaal is in negotiations to replace Holmes as Rachel Dawes.

MSNBC.com talks to Ledger about the Joker
As the Joker in the new "Batman" movie, have you tried on the mask yet? "Metaphorically, yes. I've been bouncing around like a lunatic for four months. I definitely have a different take on him, but I've yet to do a proper makeup run. It's on the agenda."
Do you walk around the house all day practicing your laugh? "I'd be lying if I said I haven't been."
April 13th, 2007: Principal Photography begins in Chicago.
Tons of set reports by Chicago citizens flood the message boards as the two week shooting schedule in Chicago is ripe for discussion. Apparently Nolan and his crew are seen with Imax cameras for a scene on a rooftop and inside of a national bank. Many report seeing actor William Fichtner on set filming scenes for the film.
According to LA Daily News, Eric Roberts has been cast as a 'Mafia Kingpin'.
Christian Bale speaks with IESB.net
On working with Heath Ledger: "Absolutely, he is a great choice for it. I like it personally. Heath has a really crazy take for playing that role. He’s going to do something really different with it."
Will we see more detective work from Batman?: (Bale picks up water bottle, starts drinking; laughter in room) "Is that clear enough?"
On playing The Batman again: "You know, I think that you got see with the other versions. You know it wasn’t my cup of tea anyway, you know, it didn’t really keep it going but I got Chris Nolan, whom I’m working with for the third time now. He ain’t going to be making a movie if he’s not going to do something very different with it, which he states. Actually, I’m very much liking the idea because I’m having the pros playing the role before. So I know it already and obviously there will be progress. We got a great cast, and Chris and I work very well together, so I know that we are going to find an awful lot to add to it. It’s certainly not the last thing is treading water, but what we have now, we were confident before in what we wanted to do but other people didn’t know, it was untested now other people support us too so we have all of that extra support behind us to sort of let rip and take it through."
May: The official website for The Dark Knight goes live with its first look at the logo for the film.
May 20th, 2007: The first look at Ledger as the Joker appears online.
Warner Bros. mysteriously posts the domain http://www.seeyouindecember.com/ on its http://www.ibelieveinharveydenttoo.com site.
Warner Bros. officially announces 'The Dark Knight' will be the first feature film to be shot partly with IMAX cameras.
"All directors promise that their sequels will be bigger and flashier than the predecessors'. But Christopher Nolan doesn't mess around.
The director's sequel to Batman Begins -- The Dark Knight -- will become the first feature film to be partly shot in the IMAX format, an expensive and cumbersome process that typically is the province of documentaries and short films.
Nolan will shoot four action sequences — including the introduction of The Joker, played by Heath Ledger — on IMAX. The move is one of Hollywood's most pronounced steps yet in its embrace of IMAX theaters, which are increasingly showing commercial fare on their giant screens.
'There's simply nothing like seeing a movie that way,' Nolan says. 'It's more immersive for the audience. I wish I could shoot the entire thing this way.'
'Batman has some of the most extraordinary characters in pop culture. We wanted The Joker to have the grandest entrance possible.'"
Jun: Entertainment Weekly magazine releases the first ever look at the new batsuit worn by Christian Bale in the film. They also release a photo of the Bat-pod.
Jul: Despite not setting up an official panel at the famed San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. begins its marketing blitz for the film in the area. A skywritten message on the sky prompted curious onlookers to dial the number written and directed to a voicemail from the Joker looking for candidates who are worthy of "tryouts".
WhySoSerious.com becomes the next site to pop up in the viral marketing.
On the 2nd day of Comic-Con, the teaser trailer finally hits and makes top headlines. The Dark Knight, despite not physically being there, dominates discussion at the media/fan heavy event.
Aug: Excitement on the net as 18 photos are somehow leaked to the mainstream, and despite Warner Bros.' effort to try and contain them, they're spreading at a rapid pace.
Sep: Distressing news, as a crew member of 'The Dark Knight' has passed away from a tragic accident.
Via Warner Bros.: "There was a fatal accident at a special effects facility for THE DARK KNIGHT. A technician on the film died when the truck he was in struck a tree following a test run. Warner Bros Pictures and the entire cast and crew of The Dark Knight are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and their hearts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased."

Jan: MTV catches up with Mark Hamill on his thoughts on Ledger's Joker. "For all those fans that dreamed of an adult approach to the material, BATMAN BEGINS got nearly everything right. I have no doubt this one will be just as good or better. The balls-out debauched psycho approach seems like a great way of reinventing everyone’s favorite scary (and scar-y) clown. [I] can’t wait to see it."
Warner Bros. is reportedly undecided on whether they would like to shelve the George Miller 'Justice League: Mortal' film or continue on with it.

Jun: Only a month away from release, Rolling Stone magazine's critic, Peter Travers, releases the first review for the film, exciting fans across the internet with the header: "Heads up: a thunderbolt is about to rip into the blanket of bland we call summer movies."
July 18th, 2008 - July 23rd, 2008: 'The Dark Knight' releases to an all time box office record of $158 million in its opening weekend and making $400 million worldwide in only its 18th day of release. Critical and commercial reception is at a stratospheric high for the franchise. One can only wonder where the story goes on now...
Thanks for taking the time to read it all if you've done so, properly spent my Sunday morning with sore hands now. Logically, I guess the next one would be the time between this film and The Dark Knight Rises. However, just glancing at a few tepid crazy rumors ("Miley Cyrus will be Batgirl!" or "Chris Nolan hates Christian Bale and wants Sam Worthington to play Bruce Wayne!!"), the sheer amount of news/rumors/bullsh*t that came from this time period will be absolutely exhausting by the time its said and done.
That and please leave more suggestions if you have other films you would like for me to report on, from its concept to the release. Cheers and have a good rest of the Sunday to you.

[Thank You] for making my mailbox and me so over the moon happy today!

Man were the RAOC gods smiling down on me today. I have no idea what I did to deserve this but WOW - I had some amazing treats in my mailbox today and am so giddy and happy about it! I didn't smell any onions in any of the mail, but there must have been some in one of the envelopes bc my eyes sure were acting like there were.
You guys went all out and just out of pure kindness and generosity and I'm reminded why I'm so happy to be apart of this. I have never witnessed anything like that, thanks to everyone on here, and here are some thanks to the fine people that helped my mailbox overflow with joy and kindness today...
u/stockman1984 x INFINITY - What an incredible surprise that was, and so thoughtful of you. It's amazing to me when someone says something totally random that you don't think much of yourself when saying it but then someone else takes note of that small thing and runs with it. I cannot thank you enough. And to even include dog stamps! You literally made my dream come true, that was so kind and generous of you and although I love every dog card you sent, I will be paying it forward. This was so special, thank you.
And my boyfriend loved his Simpsons card and he really loved the quote you included too, he says thank you. And I'll say it again - your stamp game is on POINT!
u/ElatedCats - I love your cards so much, and you know how much I love those stars. The inside of your cards are just sooooo beautiful! I have tried in the past to keep some plants alive but um...they somehow never quite make it so I too have been considering succulents, they're so pretty and diverse! I tried for years to grow some herbs on my patio but my apartment's patio gets zero sunlight because of the woods and tree shade behind it, so I finally gave up on those (I just steal my mother and mother in law to be's herbs now lol.) You could try a ficus tree - they do well without tons of light and are low maintenance, I did have one of those for a long time but gave it away before moving across the country years ago. Keep me posted on your succulent babies and let me know how it's going!
u/rainskate - Loved that card, it is so cute. And I really loved your pirate drawing and the cute joke! I love silly jokes like that too. I used to tease my father about his "bad jokes," like he was the King of them and had a bottomless pit of them, but now I picked it up and tell them all the time, and if he were still with us, I'd totally be telling him this one and he'd love it! I know you had no idea that it would make me think of such a great memory and smile, but thank you for that. And yes, I am amazed at the comics phenomenon too. As far as the film adaptations, Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger changed the game forever. What studios failed don't seem to really get though is that the magic there will never be able to be duplicated. I am excited for Joaquin Phoenix playing the Joker in his origin story though, and am the biggest Heath fan EVER (I got lucky and even got a Heath lookalike to spend my life with - before I knew my boyfriend's name his nickname was baby Heath. You should see him as the Joker, it's uncanny!) The craze will probably die out though. Jared Leto may just make that happen lol. I think the comic book craze is partly because it's one of the only tangible things we have left - people read ebooks, not books, e-mags, print journalism is basically done, we buy music digitally and not always on vinyl or CDs, etc....so comics are really one of the only goods we can hold in our hands and enjoy looking at a collection of. Wow that was a lot. Sorry for that novel lol! And thank you so much for the card!!!
u/twerpttwo - 🎶You're just a card machine. And nobody sends out cards like you.🎶 (Yes, I like to speak in song lyrics. :)) This frog card is the cutest thing EVER! And that Valentine card makes my vintage loving, Valentine's Day, romantic heart happy. It's so pretty I may frame it and the frog! (I'm getting into frogs lately.) And thank you for that bonus Canada postcard! I've never been there and it's my first Canada postcard. I was obsessed with Anne of Green Gables when I was a little girl so I always wanted to go to Prince Edward Island. The landscape on this card is gorgeous, you definitely have some beautiful surroundings there! Thank you so much!
u/JennifernDang - Thank you for the lovely card and the beautiful words inside. I was just having a conversation right before I got this about being kind. My friend and I were talking about how many people can can seem so ugly now and I was telling him that we have to remain kind in hopes that it may spread a little. And I will take very good care of my new pet crane, he will go on my desk with little odds and ends and pretty trinkets that make me smile! Thank you so much! (BTW, I actually love the smell of lemons lol!)
u/BTWheeler - LOVE this postcard! I saw too that it was taken one day after my birthday in Perth, which is where I would actually like to move to! (Or rather, WILL move to one day!) That was a really awesome image to capture and a very cool structure they made. Thank you so much for sharing this!
u/MLCathcart - Hope you had fun on your roadtrip and enjoyed the aquarium and the Orioles game! You weren't too far from me in Baltimore! My boyfriend and I would probably love your boyfriend's playlist - he must have good taste if it included The Strokes. They're one of my favorite bands, even though the time I saw them they showed up almost an hour late to the stage and Julian didn't utter a single word to us, no encore, and he made his boredom very clear, so I don't know what was up with them that night. I'm not crazy about his new solo stuff though. Anyways, thank you for the card, I live for these botanical post cards!!! Hope you had a good time and a safe trip home!
u/THATGeekyknitterguy - Man you threw me for a loop. Do you know how long I spent trying to figure out whether that postcard painting was done with acrylics or oils? I studied it so closely trying to figure out how such a gorgeous painting was put on a thin postcard, and imagine my surprise to turn it over and see that you had already explained it wasn't actually a painting. Duh, Des. 😋 But thank you for this, it's a gorgeous image and it will be making it to my framed postcard gallery wall!
u/Enska3 - x INFINITY- Wow. Let's start with the audio cassette tape. I LOVED that and I know it will be a favorite here in my house since it also has the "You Rock!" on it. Very, very cool card! Now the botanical card - I'm such a sucker for these, they're just so simple and beautiful and I get to see flowers and plants I've never heard of. Plus they're the closest thing to a plant in my apartment since I still haven't developed a green thumb. Next up - HOLY MOLY botanical postcards!!!!!! I cannot even begin to thank you enough for those and I am SO excited to pay it forward and send some joy to others with those. This particular set of botanical postcards is my absolute favorite, and part of me wants to be selfish and frame them all and hang them in neat rows but I can't wait to pass these on. I may have sort of sqealed a little in my car when I opened your package up and saw them!!! You're so sweet and that was insanely generous of you to share those with me. Thank you so, so much. This made my day!

Just watched The Empire Strikes Back for the first time. My review:

Hi guys, I'm back again after my post-viewing review of Star Wars yesterday. For those curious to read it, here's the link: https://www.reddit.com/StarWars/comments/4lghrz/my_first_star_wars_movie_live_threadpostmovie/
Following my viewing of Star Wars, I couldn’t wait more than a day to go ahead and watch The Empire Strikes Back. To say it met my expectations would be an understatement. As promised, I've written a review of The Empire Strikes Back, and I encourage everyone to share their thoughts as well. The following are my thoughts on the film and some connections I’ve drawn (or that I think I’ve drawn), followed by my overall rating of the movie. Enjoy!
Note: This is the theatrical version of The Empire Strikes Back.
I’ll treat this review the same way that I did my last one, a semi-cohesive series of thoughts about the movie. To start:
Final thoughts/connections
While the fun, lighthearted nature of Star Wars was a great way to kick things off, I’m glad they went in a dark direction with this one. The Empire Strikes Back is unafraid to let the main characters fail, and it makes the story more intense. While I was thoroughly enjoying myself last time watching the adventures of Luke Skywalker and company, The Empire Strikes Back was a movie that compelled me to keep watching.
While Star Wars was more of a linear story per se, The Empire Strikes Back felt more to me like a series of overlapping, episodic plots. You start out with the Hoth battle, then Luke flies off to Dagobah while the rest of the crew boards the Millennium Falcon. From there, you get a back and forth of both plots before they eventually find each others’ path again in Cloud City. It’s expertly done, and gives the movie a beautiful artistic touch.
One of the things I think The Empire Strikes Back really excelled in was focusing in on personal moments. The majority of the movie are scenes where characters are in isolated areas, such as in a swamp or trapped inside of the Millennium Falcon in hopes of not getting caught. This allowed for a lot more character-to-character interaction, and it helped build the dynamics between characters. Superior screenwriting in every way.
Man, John Williams knocks it out of the park again. Seriously, this soundtrack is unreal. My personal favorite is Vader’s theme music whenever he walks into a room. It characterizes him as that malefic, evil character that the story demands.
The use of the Force in this movie is so cool, and really expands on what was shown in Star Wars. While Luke pulling his lightsaber out of the ice was really cool, the big wow moment for me was when Yoda pulled Luke’s ship out of the swamp. After watching Star Wars, I was unsure what the Force could really be used for. I had seen Obi-Wan use it for mind tricks, I had seen Luke use it to block laser blasts, and eventually, guide his shot into the Death Star, but I really didn’t know the extent of the Force. Watching Yoda pull the ship out of the water was one of two moments where my jaw actually hung open in this movie (guess what the other one is). This was the moment that I realized the Force isn’t just a set of little tricks somebody can do—it’s “pull an enormous ship out of the water effortlessly” powerful. It was a "Holy crap, this is real!" moment for me, and is up there as one of my favorite scenes from both movies I've seen so far.
Overall rating
In my previous review, I called Star Wars a 10/10; a perfect movie. If Star Wars was a 10/10, I don’t know how else to judge this movie than to break the scale—this earns at least a 12/10. Seriously speaking, I honestly cannot find a flaw in this movie. Every scene propels the movie forward and contributes to its underlying themes, the romance plot is fully played out, yet doesn’t feel like it intrudes on the other plot points, and it has the most climactic ending I could’ve imagined, yet I’m still yearning for more. The Empire Strikes Back is an absolute masterpiece; there’s no other way to put it. Take a bow, Irvin Kershner.
Thanks for reading! Again, I’ll be happy to respond to any questions/comments you guys have for me regarding my first viewing of this movie. Up next, The Phantom Menace!

The 4 best (and most controversial) selected Batman comics to understand the relationship between, and psychology of, Batman, The Joker and Arkham.

I don't know if I've just had a few wires crossed or what, but the other day I read these comics in this order, and even if they weren't intended to be read like this, I feel like there is a cool narrative that can be extracted from them by following in this order. Now, the four comics I've picked I am aware can be seen as very controversial, and not everyone will agree with my selections, so saying the "best" order is a pretty bold statement to go for, but even if you didn't like these comics personally, I feel each unpacks the complexity of Batman, The Joker, their relationship and history of confrontations, and their relationship to Arkham (the Asylum, not Amadeus or Jeremiah) in a very deep manner. So, I will describe what exactly it is about each comic that I feel makes it a great story (it's also good to keep in mind that each has such a unique and great art style, really making them each stand out in that regard as well), and how these comics fit along in this sort of selected order I have created for them, and trying to address any of the controversies that come with them.
First up is Batman: Arkham Asylum - A Serious House on Serious Earth. Now I know that this is not a very standard pick, but I feel it is an excellent start to the "journey" I am about to describe. Many find it off putting because of the abstract visuals and lettering, the non-traditional panel layout, or the vastly different take on Batman and all of the rogues, but I feel it is these very points that make it so great. The story is book ended by Lewis Caroll quotes from the Alice series about dreaming, as Morrison has made it very clear that this is a comic expressing Batman's very nightmare. So yes, Batman is much more violent and brutal in this, and the interactions and relationship his has with Joker here may feel a little strange, and the concept that Batman really belongs in the Asylum along side his rogues may all seem very unorthodox for a Batman comic, but that is because what we are perceiving is Batman's worst nightmare. This is what he would hate to see in himself, and constantly fears he could so very easily become if he is not careful of himself. And it has been said that this doesn't really feel like Morrison's take on Batman, and that it is just like a story he just happened to write when he was younger, and even Morrison kind of admits to this, but that's because this was Morrison's deconstruction of the Batman of the 80's, the violent, asexual, brute of a hero that he had become. Coupled with this is Morrison's mystical interpretation of the nature of April Fool's Day, as this story is set on April 1st. As he puts it, everything becomes opposite to what you would normally be used to, so that's why Batman is violent and savage, Joker is feminine and without boundaries, the rogues are very far from their typical appearances and roles, and so on. So this may all sound not that interesting, if you are not interested in seeing a deconstructionist take on that era's Batman, so why am I suggesting you read it? Because it sets off such a good start to this selection, considering the next in line I would put is The Killing Joke. Imagine, in Arkham Asylum - A Serious House on Serious Earth, Bruce has a nightmare of giving into his violent and brutal nature, and realises that he may belong in Arkham alongside Joker and the other inmates; it would make sense that, from waking up to this, Batman may consider going into the Asylum to approach Joker on a more human level, which is exactly what he does at the start of The Killing Joke, wanting to give the Joker one final chance to connect and redeem himself. Arkham Asylum is also interesting for starting the theory of Morrison's that Joker has something called "Super Sanity", as described by Dr Ruth Adams "a brilliant new modification of human perception. More suited to urban life at the end of the twentieth centuary," which explains how such different interpretations of the Joker may be able to seemingly exist and then change with time. Morrison delved deeply into psychology for this first Batman comic of his, and then end result is a very deep and complex look at these two iconic characters, and their relationship to each other, which is definitely worth a read.
Next up is Batman: The Killing Joke. Continuing on as I described above where Batman seeks to approach Joker on more human grounds. I also like to read Joker's description of "the average man" in his humiliation of Gordon as furthering the look at Joker's psychology, and how he is able to be separated from those around him, as previously described, Joker's Super Sanity puts him as a more advanced psychological frame work, hence his mocking of the regular folk. And I am aware that Arkham Asylum is technically written after A Death of the Family (which doesn't make the list), and that takes place after The Killing Joke, but given the nature of Arkham Asylum being a dream, or the nightmare Bruce has every night, I feel it can be slotted in anywhere, and thus is a good starting point for establishing a basis of the two characters' psychology, and thus their motivations. yet there are controversies following The Killing Joke too, for the fact of Joker's (and by extension, the writer's and editors of DC at the times) treatment of prominent female hero Barbara Gordon. Moore has since denounced his own comic, saying that at the time, he was seeing how much he could get away with from his editors, and he regrets these actions, as well as it's place among the context of comics at the time, and their mounting mistreatment of women; though understanding the controversy, the effect it did and can have and accepting the change that comics should face makes of part of what is really needed to understand The Killing Joke in this day and age. As well as this, there is no real denying that someone as diabolical as the Joker would no doubt stoop to these low levels (as much as the writers and editors should have been aware of the effects this would have). There's also the fact that it conceived of the ever popular "one bad day" theory of Batman and the Joker, and despite the fact that the narrative of the comic itself addresses the flaws of this shallow interpretation, and proves it wrong in Gordon's steady mental state following and in spite of the events of this story, people still interpret this idea as valid, though that's hardly the comic's fault. That being said, it would probably be more controversial not putting The Killing Joke on this list, as it can't really be denied how well this comic captures the depth and complexity of Batman, the Joker, their relationship, their history of confrontations, as well as their psychologies and motivations. This comic is also good in this series of mine for it's ending, with Joker saying at it's conclusion that he knows no matter how many times he escapes, terrorizes Gotham and confronts Batman; Batman is always going to beat him up, to the applause of the public, and he will be sent back to the Asulym, and this sense of the escalating violence between the two, and Joker's placement again in the Asylum leads well into the next story in this selection.
Batman #663: The Clown at Midnight. Now, I'm sure most people aren't aware of this story, as I'm sure it would have skipped past a lot of readers out there, being a single issue, but it's such a good single issue, as it covers all of these themes so well. It is collected in the Batman and Son Deluxe Edition Trade Paper Back, if you were wondering, buffering two other story arcs, Batman and Son, and Batman: The Black Glove. Though, those who have seen it are probably thinking I'm out of my mind for suggesting it, as out of all of these suggestions, it is probably the most unorthodox, being 20 pages (divided into 10 'parts') of prose, interspersed lightly with a few (I'm talking like an average of ~2 per page) panels of CGI artwork throughout. So why am I including this? The prose, as written by Morrison is so visceral and excellently crafted, and because of the nature of it's form, and the perspective it is able to offer, it works so well at getting you the reader into the head's and psychology of both Batman and Joker. The events described, particularly how they are described, will no doubt make you feel uneasy on your first time reading it, because of how well crafted and graphically figurative the descriptions are, and the few 'panels' of CGI art there is are also so excellently off putting, as such a narrative about Joker in the Asylum should be. In terms of continuity, while at first the two above selections were not originally intended to be integrated into the canon Batman mythos (until they both became really popular), this comic actually does tie into the canon and events immediately before it, though all you really need to know is that someone dressed as Batman shot Joker in the head, and he is now undergoing mental as well as physical therapy in the Asylum. This story in particular witnesses the rebirth of the Joker, or one of many rebirths of his, continuing the idea of Joker's mental and psychological changes between interpretation of the character. It also makes direct reference to both of the previous entries, through Joker's previous transformations reusing particularly iconic lines of dialogue, as well as Gordon acknowledging the ordeal he went through in The Killing Joke, and a continuation of the psychological assessment in Arkham Asylum, as Batman reveals Harley, in her previous studies, furthered Joker's psychological assessment with a description of his "Super Personas", a way to describe his changing mental state, which is hypothesized to better suit him to living in this modern age, and which allowed him to change with the times with each of his previous antics being like previous "lives" of his. So, despite how under-read this issue is (and being prose, it has just as much to say as perhaps a whole trade paper back may offer), or how non-traditional it is, I still highly recommend it, whether on it's own, a part of Morrison's run, or as a part of this selected series of mine, with the idea of rebirths and super personas fitting well in explaining the next and final story in this journey.
Batman: Death of the Family. I feel like Scott Snyder really understands Batman, and Bruce, on a level that most writers just don't. With the New 52 rebooting the timeline, and de-aging most of DC's characters, Snyder got the chance to write a younger, more cold or aloof Batman and Bruce. I've always felt, across interpretations, that a younger Bruce is more angry, fierce and vengeful (see e.g. Year One, Zero Year, Mask of the Phantasm flash backs, Batman Begins, and the likes), and yet he seems to plateau out later in life to a more happy, redemptive and balanced person, so with this younger Bruce, we can see the struggles of a more distant Batman, and the repercussions that such a cold and dettached life may have. It shows how such a clinical mentality Bruce feels he requires for his job as a detective can be at times to his detriment. I feel like, coming off the back of Morrison's Batman, who was able to show that Batman can be happy with family, this is the consequent; that pushing away your family is detrimental (the premise of the book). It may seem contradictory that Bruce would have amassed such a large Batfamily and still require learning this message, though I feel it logically follows for a younger Bruce to still need to learn this, it's just that how the mechanics of the New 52 worked, all the characters were younger across the board, but most events and relationships still existed (mostly), just in a more compressed manner, though I don't feel that really hurts the story this comic tells. There's also the controversy of Joker, with many remembering him for his lack of a face in this story (literally, he wears it as a mask). And while some find this unnecessarily "edgy", it fits well with the metaphorical premise of the story, exposing Batman and Joker's "true face", as well as Joker getting under the Batfamily's "skin". So this story is probably most grounded in it's continuity (being volume 3 of 10, though also a good stand alone story), though I feel it has a lot to say in this final (of sorts) evolution of Joker, and Batman. It shows examples of Joker's previous 'lives', and hence evidence of his rebirth/evolution, just by looking at the many different physical appearances of the Joker throughout the comic (which represent, and go hand in hand with his psychological transformations), such as the i) faceless Joker look, ii) the last seen image of the Joker seen at the start, a more traditional look, iii) a flashback with Joker on the blimp, looking much more like Cesar Romero's Joker, and finally iv) the epilogue flashback, with facial scars similar to Bermejo's Joker, or Heath Ledger's. Even though young, the fact that this is a retelling of The Man Who Laughs (it self, a retelling of classic pre-crisis Joker stories), also following the events of The Killing Joke in a more direct fashion, and simultaneously succeeding the events of these comics, Death of the Family builds the sense of progression of these stories, and hence evolution of these characters. It once again places Joker in "love" with Batman (just like Arkham Asylum), also retelling, of sorts, the events of Arkham Asylum, with Joker taking over the Asylum, Batman being forced to confront each of his rogues, and the idea which Joker proposes, that Batman really belongs alongside his villains in the Asylum. This is also great for building a cyclical narrative of Batman and Joker, and the Asylum of sorts, with a younger Batman tormented by the new and evolved personality of the Joker, in love with him, while destroying his family, which you could imagine could impact Bruce to the degree perhaps of giving him nightmares (maybe instilling within him the thoughts of his place alongside the Joker, in the Asylum, away from his family, which could drive his nightmares in Arkham Asylum to begin with). Even if you are not a fan of circular narratives, each of these comics along the way have been a great critical look at Batman and Joker, their duality and antagonism, as well as their relationship to Arkham Asylum, that I would say are essential to the characters, and must reads.
So these are my thoughts on these four controversial, yet so excellent takes on Batman and the Joker, and the continuity of these stories only enhances the value of these texts. I guess I could give a few honourable mentions though; Batman: The Man Who Laughs, being the post-crisis origin and retelling of Batman's first encounter with the Joker as the Joker, it could easily drive this above narrative of the two, and of the Asylum, their history of confrontations, etc. It was made in 2005, following the knowledge of the events of The Killing Joke (and I guess it's pre-crisis inspirations), and though there isn't much controversy surrounding this comic, I feel it doesn't quite grapple with the depth or the complexities of these characters as the above texts do, though it is a nice starting point. Brian Azzarello's Joker Original Graphic Novel. This comic is a really great insight into the mind and life of Joker, though it is non-canon, of sorts (that didn't stop Arkham Asylum and the Killing Joke, though). I feel this comic does explore the same depths and complexity of Joker's psychology as the above texts, really showing how human, yet how despicably and irredeemably vile the Joker is, and if you wish, it could be slotted between The Killing Joke and The Clown at Midnight, with Joker receiving similarly devastating injuries here as he would prior to The Clown at Midnight. Though this story is really distinct in it's world, characters and story telling, with a real world grit similar to it's contemporary The Dark Knight, which makes it hard to place among other "comicy" stories (though I guess Super Personas and all would probably iron that one out). There were controversies on this take, though believe me when I say this telling is such a telling and believable take as any interpretation of the Joker. Lastly, there's also The Dark Knight Returns, again following the psychological assessment of the Joker, following his "love" for Batman, with a very fitting finale to their confrontation, on top of being as well such excellent deconstructions of these characters. There are controversies again on Joker's despicable actions here, as such with The Killing Joke, or the Joker OGN, as well as how hard out this interpretation of Batman is, though keep in mind that this text was a satire of the Batman at the time, though still, all the same it shaped much of what the future Batman would become. Also, while I'm at it, dishonourable mention to Batman: A Death in the Family, for making the Joker a grinning idiot with no depth, having nothing of importance to say on anyone involved in the story, with the whole saga really only being lead up to an "event", which is an excuse to just be loud and 'bold', without having any real "story" or significance attached to it, though that's just my 'controversial' take. Of course, if I wasn't just talking comics, I would give special mention to Batman '89, The Dark Knight, the Arkham Series, The Telltale series, and so on.
So these are my takes on these classic Joker and Batman stories, and what makes them so valuable. Tell me what you think of my interpretations, your interpretations on these stories, or this progression, or what Batman and Joker stories you feel have the same profound connection as the stories mentioned above. At this point, after having so much to say, I'm glad you have followed along and read all of my thoughts, so I would be happy to hear what each of you have to say. :)

Joker "fans" who don't get the point (x-post with r/Batman)

Now, I'm a big Joker fan, as anyone who sees my post on here surely knows and as everyone who knows me is aware of.
But I am so damn sick of people just quoting the Joker over and over again. I don't mean in situations where it makes sense or is funny, or when it's a question like "what's your favourite quote?". And I have no problem with images+quotes posts, that is fine for me.
What I can't stand is people quoting the Joker without any criteria, any reasoning behind it or any context and obviously no understanding of the character. Just mindless chatter to sound cool.
It's usually Heath Ledger's Joker they are quoting. I love TDk and Heath Ledger's Joker, but these people just don't get what the character is talking about.
I also saw a few people using Joker as a political symbol for social change, like "let's get out of the eurozone, burn the money like Joker did and free ourselves!" and stupid shit like that. Are people really so dumb they don't get that the Joker doesn't want to "free" people or better the world?
I had to dislike a Joker facebook page because it was getting so annoying. People would just answer "let's put a smile on that face" to anything. Getting a fan conversation going was impossible.
Look, the Joker is awesome, he's my favourite villain of all time. But you can have constructive and fun conversations about him and Batman and comicbooks and movies without being so damn annoying.
You can actually get somewhere talking about him, instead of repeating random quotes. Don't just repeat stuff, think about it, criticize it, analyze it.
Does this annoy anyone else? Am I alone in running into these kind of mindless idiots way too often?
Sorry for the rant, but I got another random "let's put a smile on that face" reply today and it irked me.
Edit: To clarify, I'm not criticizing people who have interiorized part of Joker's philosopy, but the brainless, thoughtless quoting. The difference is important to me.

A Heartfelt Plea for Jared Leto's Joker: Give the Guy a Chance.

"You want to protect the world, but you don't want it to change." -Ultron, "Avengers: AoU"
I first saw this quote used in this sense directly after "Age of Ultron" first was released. The reviewer asserted that this line was directed at a people who go to comic book movies expecting what they saw in the comics. Comic book fans want to see their favorite characters preserved on the big screen forever, but they don't want film makers to touch their beloved characters. I find this logic silly because comic book characters rarely stay the same between different forms of media, or even different comics. I wanted to write this in response to all the negative (and undeserved) criticism that Jared Leto has received in response to the new take on the Joker.
The thing comic book characters have done really well through out their run is adapt with the times. Writers have always tried to keep things relevant in their comic book universes and, if todays movie economy is any indication, have done a very good job of doing so. This is true for the two most malleable characters in comic history, Batman and the Joker. These characters have had at least 5 major iterations(Adam West's "Batman", Burton's "Batman", BTAS, Nolan-verse and the Arkham games) in the past 50 years and, while they have kept some base characteristics, have all been quite different from each other. This is even more true for the Joker, whose personality and look have shifted quite dramatically between all of these examples. Romero's was the prankster, Nicholson was the gangster, Hamil the sadist, and Ledger the anarchist(we've all seen the meme). I believe they knew they needed to go in a much different direction than Ledger, so they actually turned to what comics are doing with the Joker now in the New 52, in which the Joker first cuts off his face and reattaches it later with leather straps. Leto's Joker is the psychopath. These two pictures really show some of the similar design choices, especially the hair, between the two. This is because he is a psychopath and those people tend to do weird stuff to themselves. If you asked me to draw what a real life Joker would look like today, I'd probably be closer to what Leto is portraying than Hamill or Nicholson's interpretation.
I remember when Heath Ledger was first cast as the Joker. People called this the "end of Batman movies" and how could Nolan made such a horrendous error with such a good track record. Here was an actor that was known for "Ten Things I Hate About You", "A Knight's Tale", and "Brokeback Mountain"(I lived in a redneck town so this fact got a lot of hate), not great roles as a precursor to the Joker. TDK came and those people were wrong by a long shot. Now we have Leto, an actor known for more dramatic roles, coming to play the Joker and we won't give him the light of day because we disagree with some tattoos. "The Joker", a psycho, got those tattoos and that's part of the suspension of disbelief. Yea they're odd because a complete nut job got them done. Jared Leto is poised to give us an awesome and completely unique take on an old tale and we just aren't ready for the world to change. Give the man a chance.
Edit: Thank you all for reading my rage dump! I like the feedback I got and agree we'll just have to wait to see the guy's performance.

TIL that Heath Ledger prepared for the Joker role by going into complete isolation for 6 weeks in a hotel room with only a journal and comic books related to the script and Joker.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 43%. (I'm a bot)
Yes, some scamp leaked our Joker cover image yesterday*.
Though they may take our pictures, they will never take our, erm, words.
In an exclusive interview Empire sat down on the set of The Dark Knight with Heath Ledger, aka The Joker, as well as the rest of the cast and crew, to talk about bringing the greatest villain in comic book history to the screen again.
"I definitely feared it," says Ledger of taking a role that every fanboy around the world demands to see done right.
Getting into that mindset meant Ledger marinading himself in nothing but Joker before shooting.
"I sat around in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked myself away, formed a little diary and experimented with voices - it was important to try to find a somewhat iconic voice and laugh. I ended up landing more in the realm of a psychopath - someone with very little to no conscience towards his acts. He's just an absolute sociopath, a cold-blooded, mass-murdering clown, and Chris has given me free rein. Which is fun, because there are no real boundaries to what The Joker would say or do. Nothing intimidates him, and everything is a big joke".

Questions Answers
Was it better then the dark knight? Personally, I would say not. It has a different and difficult job to do -- it has to wrap up a trilogy, whereas TDK just had to ramp up from Begins into Batman's full-on, no-holds-barred conflict against his arch-adversary.
DKR has to tie in strands from Begins and TDK, and take the franchise somewhere new, and provide a conclusion for all the old characters plus a whole different supporting cast. So I think it would have been very, very hard for it to do the same as TDK, and still feel like an 'ending'.
After having seen it once, I would rank it between Begins and TDK, but it's still one of the greatest third movies in a trilogy I can think of.
I just saw it and it was better than TDK. Plot wise. I think it's hard to call right now as most of us will have seen TDK quite a few times, and it was released 4 years ago, whereas DKR is so fresh.
Was it not as good as TDK simply because Heath wasn't in it? Because TDK, storywise, was rather poor. And the pacing of the film was atrocious. Batman Begins I felt had a better story and flow, whereas the TDK, laden with faults, was dominated by Heath's performance. I think it would be possible to make that argument, yes. I don't think there is anything to quite match Heath Ledger's Joker in this movie, and that probably does rob it of a certain energy and power. Anne Hathaway is a surprise hit in my opinion -- she is superb -- but Joker just felt like a very real danger throughout TDK, and I didn't feel that same sense of sheer uncontrolled tension running through DKR.
I agree, Nolan's movies maybe do have some flaws in terms of pacing and plotting. There is a lot of action reward to make up for that, and fantastic character moments, but the story maybe isn't the strongest aspect.
but it's still one of the greatest third movies in a trilogy I can think of. There is no way it can be better than Rocky vs Mr. T. Not being difficult, but that isn't a trilogy.
I'm going to see it again on Friday so i'll re-watch TDK tonight, but from what I can remember, this movie beats it. How far apart would you rate TDK and DKR? I would give TDK a 9 and DKR 9.5. I'm going to see DKR again tonight and tomorrow, but right now I would rate DKR at 7-8 and TDK at 8. I'm pretty harsh! I would put Begins at 6.
The more I think about DKR now, though, the more I enjoy the memory of it, so I think I might like it even better on second and third viewing.
I don't think any other villain can match Joker, but Selina Kyle is everything I could have hoped for.
Would you fuck Anne Hathaway? I would take her out on a date and buy her dinner, then shake her father's hand and give her mom flowers.
But would you fuck her ? If we were married or exclusively dating, no doubt physical intimacy of the kind you suggest would be part of my relationship with Anne, of course - seems a strange question. How do you feel about her.
You sir are a sir! Upvotes to the left, my good gentlesir.
That I would fuck her...Hahaha sorry man , just messing with you coz jealous of you for getting to see rises before everyone...lucky guy.. That's ok, I enjoyed thinking about the romantic dates I would go on with Ms Hathaway, or Anne as I might call her after we had been courting for a few months
IS IT AWESOME?!?!?!?!?! Overall I went into this movie with ridiculously high expectations and it really had to work hard for me. There were about 6-10 moments of pure awesomeness where fans might want to punch the air (I wasn't in the best kind of audience as I think it was mostly journalists -- so, that didn't help the atmosphere). There were some stretches where I felt a little disappointed, but yes, there are moments where you will feel truly rewarded.
Is the ending open enough that it will lead comfortably into a future film? Or should I expect this as the end of a trilogy? I think that might border on spoilers... a fan who has paid close attention to the Batman comics of the past 20 years or so will be able to predict every story-beat, but the ending is one of the most satisfying parts, and I'd be reluctant to discuss that in any detail at all.
Thank you, that is a great reply in itself and answers my question ;) Appreciate your question!
Have you used your ability to see a movie 24 hours early to get laid? I've seen the movie early and signed into Reddit, if that answers your question /foreveralone.
I'm afraid that it does, friend. There's still time to visit seduction before the movie goes on general release.
How did it compare to the 2nd? BetteR? For me, it was better than Batman Begins but not quite up to The Dark Knight... but obviously everyone's mileage will vary. I think it had a very challenging job to do in wrapping things up while also providing something new, and it does both those things really well, plus a lot of great moments (comedy, action, suspense, twists).
It didn't quite blow me away like TDK, but then I wasn't expecting so much of TDK, and Ledger's performance was perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
once in a lifetime? Too soon, man. Too soon. So many feels.
Am I crazy for thinking that Batman Begins was better than TDK? I feel differently, but I don't think your opinion is crazy or wrong! What do you prefer about Batman Begins?
I just think BB felt like a Batman movie whereas TDK felt like a Batman/JokeHarvey Dent movie, if that makes sense. DKR is going to feel like a lot of other people's movies to you, then... without spoiling, there are quite a few lengthy stretches of the narrative that focus more on other characters. I'd say that DKR is more of an ensemble piece even than TDK (which as you say is really about three or four guys, including Gordon) -- though it does have Bruce's character arc at its spine.
I think I'm also maybe one of four people that wasn't overly enamored with Ledger as the Joker. I know the Joker sort of represents chaos to Batman's order, but I would have liked to have seen a bit more depth and subtlety to the character. Lol I said 'spine' in a discussion about Batman and Bane.
That said, how's the class struggle element of the movie? More specifically, how much of it is on Bane, compared to Selina, who was the one carrying it in the trailers? Class struggle is a huge theme for Bane in the comics, so I'm curious as to whether that carries over for him. My feeling after one viewing is that the movie was 'about' class struggle in the same way as TDK was 'about' the war on terror -- that is, it was about those concerns, but in such a way that Nolan can plausibly deny he is taking any particular political stance. Or, you could say that it's an action movie with a veneer of political topicality. People levelled that criticism at TDK. I'm not sure I saw Bane as being loaded with class themes in the comics -- I have read all the key Bane stories, I think. His role is ultimately quite surprising. Without spoiling, he turns out to be more of a soldier than a general.
Please tell me Tom Hardy was awesome. I can certainly agree he was awesome. I think Bane's role is slightly less important to the story than we were led to believe in the trailers and posters, but he gives the character an incredible depth and complexity, especially when you consider that so much of him is hidden. He's not as terrifying as Joker -- but you actually feel sorry for him at one point, and I think you see his eyes brim with tears. His voice is... unusual. It's sometimes almost hilariously rich and 'actorly', and sometimes you can't quite understand it, but mostly it all works very well.
How's Anne Hathaway? I think she's a good actress, but thought she was probably miscast as Selina/Catwoman. But I was pretty much sold by Hathaway in the trailers, and I am 100% sold by her in the movie. She's in keeping with the Selina Kyle you will be familiar with from the comics of, say, the last 20-30 years, but there are new dimensions to her, as well. She's a grifter, a con-artist, someone who can slip between different levels of society. Hathaway is just quick as a whip and sharp as a knife as Selina -- I think she was originally a dancer and she performs some smart ballet kicks during fights; even when she's getting on and off her bike she raises her leg horizontally and swings it over the vehicle. There are great subtle moments where her performance entirely changes from damsel in distress and scared helpless victim to cynical criminal. I would say this is without doubt the best role of her career to date.
I did read that Bane is supposed to have a melodic voice. "florid in his speech, [with] the physicality of a gorilla". I'm glad to hear he's awesome. That is a very good description. It's always not easy to understand, but it's probably most reminiscent of James Earl Jones as Darth Vader. It's much better than just having him growl, because he needs to be distinct from Batman (Bruce's Bat-voice in this movie is even more turned up to the max) and his 'florid' diction and style reminds you that he's not just a thug, but a mastermind.
Obviously you didn't see The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Hathaway does bring new depth to the unpromising role of Princess Mia, but I think her performance as Selina Kyle even has the edge over that tour de force.
How does the general picture quality compares to IMAX sequence from TDK? (I think this one was entirely shoot using IMAX film) I think 'almost half' of this movie was shot on IMAX.
I have to say that the parts not on IMAX looked surprisingly crummy on an IMAX screen. The IMAX sequences were amazing -- some great cityscapes and even some hand-to-hand fistfighting on a huge scale -- but when it cut back to the normal ratio, I really noticed the grain and the loss of quality.
I think it's a question of only noticing it when you're shown something better -- as if you were watching in HD, then switched back to normal.
I know that feel, even on 46" 1080p screen it is easy to spot. I can't really understand the logic behind doing just some parts of it in IMAX, it doesn't ruin the movie, but it makes you conscious that the filming technique changed and thus conscious that it is "just" a movie. Absolutely agree with you... it was quite jarring when the screen size changed significantly. One minute the image fills the whole wall, the next it's a smaller rectangle and the picture's grainier.
How is tom hardy as bane? He has some incredible fight scenes - stunning power and it's shocking to see how hard Batman has to work to even knock him back (huge double-handed blows, and Bane doesn't even flinch). He also conveys a surprising amount of emotion with just his eyes. I found his voice a bit hard to follow sometimes and he isn't what I would call a great villain in the Joker league, but it buries memories of Jeep Swanson in the Schumacher movie. He even has one really funny line, if you can understand him.
You're not talking about the "it would be extremely painful... for you" line, are you? Because I'll be sad if I've already seen his best line... It's something like 'what a lovely, lovely voice!' to himself. It got laughs even in the slightly subdued audience I was sitting with -- maybe they were mostly from me, though. Particularly funny as his voice is so... melodious, but rasping. Maybe he really appreciates nice vocal sounds, because of his own refined accent and his disability with the mask... I can imagine Hardy might have invented the line himself.
Does Bane kill Dumbledore?! Dumbledore appears in a post-credit sequence that will blow your mind when you realise the role he played in the Dark Knight trilogy.
With Nolan casting Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy, did it ever feel like Inception? I would say not for that reason. I've noted above on this thread that there is one shot, the penultimate shot I think, that felt to me like Inception, but that's because it seems to take us far outside Gotham into another time and place (and maybe another genre).
To Gordon-Levitt and Hardy's credit, I think their performances here are totally committed to DKR and didn't remind me of their roles in any other movies -- they fit into this story and this world, and JGL in particular was surprisingly great in my opinion.
I just saw the film today for a quality check for the theater I work at. I definitely know the scene you are talking. High-five, Bat-partner. I look forward to being able to actually talk about the film openly and recite lines from it!
What previews can we expect before the movie? I think Man of Steel but I was at a press screening with no ads.
I love Hans doing the soundtracks. Noticed when Joker was up to no-good in TDK, there was a slight buzzing noise. Is there something similar in DKR? Yes. Basically the high-pitched strings are replaced by drums... it's not exactly subtle. There are drums almost all the way through the movie except when we're with Bruce's (uncertainly) heroic theme.
It is super long right? Does it feel like that? Is it lengthy? Yes, it does. I feel like I got up and went straight to see the movie this morning, then came out mid-afternoon. It feels like an epic. Parts of it dragged a little for me, but nobody in the whole (large) theater got up for a bathroom break, and this was a room full of journalists, not diehard fans, so I think that says something about the gripping plot.
Gripping plot - perfect descriptor. I went to the midnight premiere about 17 hours ago and despite being really tired, I was enthralled the entire time and could have woken up this morning and gone again. Thanks, I'm glad you agree! I am now looking forward to my second viewing at 6pm tonight.
Awesome, enjoy! Thinking of going again over the weekend. By this time tomorrow I will have seen the movie THREE times -- I feel like a true Bat fan this week.
Do you think this movie release will be so monumental that it will start breaking records? or no where near the avengers? Hard to say. It is not a family-friendly, audience-pleasing movie in the same way. It doesn't have so much quotable banter or clean-looking CGI. It's a kind of grim and dirty (or snowy) movie, with a lot of violence, some political discussion, character examination and quite a complex plot.
As a Batman fan, my priority is that Batman is done in a way I feel is 'right' and that I feel happy with it; then if it's critically well-received and makes good money, that's a bonus because it won't be considered a disaster in the press or held up for public ridicule, and if it breaks records, that's nice because I feel something I like has been validated.
But if it's a great Batman movie, I don't really care so much if everyone 'gets it'. I'm sure Nolan, Warners, Syncopy etc do care, and I hope it does very well, but for me, as I'm sure fans will understand, the most important level is personal.
Is it worth seeing? Is it even worth watching online? Well, that depends. What other movies do you like?
I watched the first two, they were okay. My favourite movies have to be American Psycho, Severance, Se7en, Fight Club, All the James Bond films, etc, etc, etc. I would have to say that this movie sounds right up your alley. Bale plays Batman a lot like Bateman, there are elements of Se7en in the sadism and torture scenes, and James Bond spectacle in terms of the hardware, the explosives, the vehicles and Anne Hathaway in a catsuit.
I can't imagine why you wouldn't like this movie, but if you only thought the first two were okay, I would still think it's worth your time. It is up to the standard of those two -- you might prefer Begins or TDK, but it's somewhere between the two in terms of tone and approach.
Alright, cheers man :) I'll watch it when it's released over here in the UK. That's tomorrow night I think :)
Is Marion Cotillard's character Miranda Tate based off of Talia al Ghul, or is she actually an original character? The arguments about this in fandom are infuriating and I need to know so I don't sit there screaming in the theater. As Lucius Fox says in this movie, 'I plead the Fifth'.
When I see the movie, depending on the answer, I may or may not scream "God damn you, Brooker1970, how could you not prepare me for this pain?!" I'm really not going to say anything specific about plot, because as a long-time Batman fan, I was expecting a lot of what happened, but I still enjoyed it at the time, and I would have hated someone to spell things out to me beforehand.
Oh, absolutely. Bane, as well. I can't argue with that. I'm not sure if I can remember more than one person of color all the way through DKR, apart from a couple of minor police roles.
"duhh is bane in dark night lights up named bane cuz of bain meanign da movee is a conspearasee set up by da obamba peoples to take out romnee?" -- asks Rush Limbaugh. He told me to write it just like that. Link to i.imgur.com
Were there any subtle hints or mentions of the joker? Absolutely none that I remember, although pretty much every single other character who is still alive (and one who's dead) comes back in this movie.
I think not mentioning Joker at all feels a bit strange. It's 8 years ago, but the events of TDK would be something like 9/11 to Gotham -- it would be a huge reference point for the city and its people. They talk about Harvey Dent a lot, but I don't recall any mention of Joker. I can understand that Nolan wanted to be respectful about Heath Ledger, and not resurrect him as a character, when a real man had passed away... but in terms of the fictional world, it seems odd.
Especially as Joker is mentioned at the end of Batman Begins, that's one loose thread. He doesn't seem to fit the larger story arc about the League of Shadows, so he comes across as entirely rogue -- this weird thing that happened to Batman and Gotham, 8 years ago, with no connection to anything else.
He doesn't seem to fit the larger story arc about the League of Shadows, so he comes across as entirely rogue -- this weird thing that happened to Batman and Gotham, 8 years ago, with no connection to anything else. Honestly doesn't that seem a bit... well, appropriate for the Joker? Yes, I agree. It does, but also Joker is a constant presence in Batman's mythos and his life (in the comics), so not having him even mentioned seems odd. I agree, he could have completely vanished, but some reference would have seemed fitting.
After leaving were you thinking WTF like Inception, or more like, Good lord that was amazing like The Prestige? I was a lot more WTF about The Prestige -- each time I watch it, the ending blows my mind a little.
Inception made more immediate sense to me for some reason.
Great question because I was just thinking as I left the cinema that the penultimate scene, right before the final shot, does feel like Inception. In a very interesting way -- that is, it doesn't feel like a Batman film anymore. It feels like we've left Gotham and gone somewhere different, into a different movie.
The best way of describing it would be perhaps to remind you of the scene where we see Hannibal Lector walking down a sunlit busy street, enjoying his freedom, far from the prison of Silence of the Lambs.
When I watched TDK I felt like I was watching a standalone movie, rather than the second part of a trilogy. Does this movie pull in threads from the other two and feel like a proper end to a trilogy? Yes, absolutely. That weakens it a little as a movie in its own right, because it has to do so much, but it wraps things up with skill and satisfying twists. It manages to weave Begins and TDK together, in terms of character, tone and plot.
As such, it's really successful -- because it makes the other two films feel like more of a piece -- but as I preferred TDK to Begins, it dilutes the intensity of TDK a little by going back to the spirit and themes of the first film.
Is batmans voice still just as grumbly? and i heard that bane's voice is the same way, all raspy and grumbly... are there any hilariously grumbly or hard to understand conversations between the two? Uh, yeah. Actually yes. There were scenes when I felt the dialogue was almost unintelligible. And presumably this was with a great sound system, at the London BFI IMAX theater.
The explosions and drumbeats really rocked your seat, but there are passages where I literally couldn't make out what Bane was saying to Batman.
I think Bane's voice is perhaps a little hilarious -- it's what we would, in the UK, call 'plummy' -- rich and privileged, well-spoken -- but obviously distorted.
As noted above, there is one shot at the start of the football stadium scene where he actually delivers a laugh-out-loud line of dialogue.
Leaked script Bane:GRUMBLE GRUMBLE Bane:COOKIES! Batman:GRUMBLE GRUMBLE GRUMBLE Batman:NEVER Bane sounds like Count Von Count crossed with Cookie Monster.
Are you offended that when I saw your username and that you saw it in London, I assumed you were Charlie Brooker? No, he is a great writer and hugely successful -- pretty sure he was born a year after me though (ie. he would be brooker1971)
What is the maximum price you would have paid for a ticket to see it? Good question. To be honest, as I've just published another book on Batman and Nolan's movies, and written so many articles recently about the lead-in to DKR, and I'm so invested in Batman right now, I would probably pay up to £150 if there was no other way I could see it.
That is, I'd pay around as much as I would for a stadium concert from a major star.
If I wasn't such a Batman fanboy at the moment, I'd pay £10-15.
For context, I haven't even seen The Amazing Spider-Man yet, so I'm not that bothered by superhero movies in general.
Been wondering for a looooooooong time, pm me if you think its a spoiler. I don't think this is a spoiler as it's been circulated for a while now. No, there is no venom. He is being supplied with a painkiller through his mask.
Does bane use venom or get bigger in the movie? He looks pretty 'swole' but I was surprised by his build... he's more huge like a wrestler, not ripped or defined in the chest and stomach. I'm no bodybuilder and I'm sure Hardy and Nolan really thought about Bane's workout routine, diet and fighting style very carefully, but he looks big and bulky, with a functional build, not a body built for showing off.
I am really worried about Catwoman... Can you just say whether or not she pulled it off? OK, I can say without hesitation that as a lifelong Batman fan and to an extent, Batman expert, I was absolutely happy with Selina Kyle in this movie. Note that I don't think she is ever called Catwoman in DKR. I think she was a highlight.
Seeing her work with Batman is just perfect in fan terms... it looks just like you would imagine from the comics.
Obviously these movies do not follow the comics in Any way, but rather turns Batman into something new and Christopher Nolan makes it his own. With that said, and disregarding the comics, would you say he succeeded in making something worth re-watching over and over? Yes, though I think my plan to see it three times in 48 hours was probably overkill - the third time is feeling too much now. I think I would personally need longer breaks to process it. On the other hand, there's a lot of detail and dialogue you probably won't catch on first viewing.
I saw it last night, did you like/dislike what they did with the last few scenes? I actually loved the last few scenes. I think it was absolutely predictable on one level for anyone familiar with Batman comics, but the way it played out was incredibly enjoyable.
Without spoilers, did you like/dislike the ending?
On a scale of "pretty damn" to "real fuckin'" how enjoyable was it? I'd say 'pretty damn' for most of it, with moments of 'real f**kin' (sorry I like to avoid swearing if I can)
Did they have the Inception in the movie? They had it in Inception. Depends what movie you mean.
Fuck you. Upvoted for adding valuably to the discussion.
Upvoted for adding valuably to the discussion. I look forward to the day caffeineTX has to quote this on a discussion about 'which one of your comments got you the most karma'
I just finished banging your mom, AMA. You just answered the one question I had.
No, I agree. I am not into comic books or super heroes and I watched Batman Begins randomly. No one had made a big deal about it like they did Dark Knight. It caught me off guard and instantly became one of my favorite movies of all time. I agree with you too. I was expecting TDK to be as good as Batman Begins -- that is, fairly decent. It blew me away because my expectations were average and I knew nothing much about the movie.
There is a Ted Talk that discusses how small unexpected pleasantries create more happiness than big things that are hyped up. I've been paying close attention to the DKR publicity and really looking forward to it, so this movie would have had an incredibly difficult time if it was going to both shock me and satisfy me -- it could have done some really out-there weird stuff, but that would have been a disappointing ending, and this episode had to tie things together.
I really appreciate your reply. It was very clear and well written. Made me appreciate both movies more. This has been a great discussion so far, thank you!
Bane sounds like Count Von Count crossed with Cookie Monster. For people who like 'WHERE WERE THE OTHER DRUGS GOING... SWEAR TO ME!' there is a scene for you in this movie that seems to pay deliberate tribute to it, with Batman going ape and terrorising someone for information, in his crazy growling voice -- I laughed and loved it, anyway. I think there's a fair amount here that is just for fans.
I sent you a private message so I do not spoil the movie for other redditors. OK, I have broken my spoiler-silence in private!
OK, I have broken my spoiler-silence in private! Sorry, I was being dumb about the private message system. Did you get my reply now?
Did they set it up for another batman or is this the end. I'm not going to answer that in any detail except to say that.
This feels like a very conclusive ending to Nolan's Batman.
It also taps into the idea, which I fully believe in, that Batman is a concept rather than an individual, and part of folklore and popular imagination -- Batman will never end.
One of the recent articles I read about TDKR stated that the IMAX cameras were too noisy for dialogue scenes. Can't find the reference now, so take it with a grain of salt. Surely they can sync dialogue in later. I am not a big fan of switching format from one shot to the next -- it seems very strange to me.
There were some articles I read that said because of the sheer bulk of IMAX cameras, it was very difficult to use them to film the whole movie (e.g. Batman's cave, etc). Well, the Bat-cave was shot here, Stage 30 of Sony Studios, Culver City. Looks pretty big to me. But yeah, Nolan is no fool so I'm sure there is a good reason for it.

I'll definitely see it anyway, as a huge batman fan it is my duty! OK, from one Batman fan to another, I think you are going to love the way this film winds up. It wraps up the trilogy very, very well indeed.
I think he means in TDK, not DKR. Oh, sorry. That sounds like a myth -- something people have picked up from The Crow and Gladiator, and applied to TDK.
WE ALREADY KNOW BATMAN DIES AT THE END. Well, you wait and see what happens, and maybe you will be surprised.
Bain is killed by tals gulia or whatever, batman runs away to france with catwoman, josep gorden levit becomes robin or whatever. In DKR, Jim Gordon says to John Blake: 'not seeing the question yet there, son.'
Does Batman really die in this movie? Answer with some variation of "No Spoilers" for YES. Answer with No for NO. This is a serious reply and it's true to the movie. BATMAN CANNOT DIE because he is more than a man. He is a symbol and an idea.
So Christian Bale dies . . but Batman Lives on . Yesssss. I didn't say that, but you go ahead and expect it, because the movie has some fun twists and turns.
Wow. reminds me of the line from the morrison run - Batman and Robin will NEVER die. I would suggest that Nolan was very much aware of recent comics -- from Knightfall through No Man's Land onward -- including the recent Dick Grayson/Batman storylines.
Yeah he probably died, now that I saw that response. The title Dark Knight Rises comes to have obvious and significant relevance by the end of the movie.
Well, you keep thinking that until you see the movie, and maybe you'll be surprised and maybe you won't!
