I turned it over to ITV 4 to watch Casino Royale with Daniel Craig...Instead I'm watching Casino Royale with Pete Sellers, which i've never seen.

I was watching Casino Royale again and noticed that Daniel Craig's midsection looks like a beer gut, but you can also clearly see his abs. What makes that happen? Is that just his shape?

The reason I ask is since I began body building 7 months ago, my tummy looks bigger and less defined, except when I flex. So I was just wondering if maybe that's the direction I'm predisposed to look like or if it's something different I can do with my training.

I'm nearly 10 years late to the party lads, but good grief is Skyfall a great movie

I never liked Daniel Craig as an actor so never watched his movies, including Bond. But recently I went through all the Bonds and finally got to Craig's versions and I'm proper impressed let me tell you
Casino Royale was great in itself, but Skyfall takes it to another level. Literally lads, not taking the piss here, but I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. So much was going on and I was thoroughly entertained. Everything was top notch. Plot was masterful, acting was great as ever, goat tier opening song and Javier was one intense, false teeth having mofo let me tell you. Better than that fella from QoS. Don't even remember his name he was that bland
This Craig lad is really making a claim to be my favourite Bond over the legend that is Sir Roger Moore
I just have to watch Spectre now

About preparing for No Time To Die

Hi, new here.
Uh, I've never saw any of the Bond films before and wasn't interested at all.
Yesterday, I accidentally clicked on the trailer of NTTD on YouTube. After watching it, I was stunned. The action, the classic theme song (I've heard it though I've never saw the films) and Daniel Craig was really thrilling.
So I've decided to watch NTTD in theaters now. But before that, should I go through all the Bond films from Dr. No to Spectre to catch up the story? Cuz there are 24 and I'm not sure if I could finish all of them before NTTD is released in theaters. Or could I just watch Daniel Craig's Bond films (a friend told me so but he was not a fan so I decided to come here for help)?
Any comments are appreciated. So excited about becoming a part of the 007 family!

Goldeneye was a great start to the Pierce Brosnan era of the James Bond franchise but sadly none of his other Bond films were as good

It's no surprise Martin Campbell was hired back to direct Casino Royale when it was time to restart the franchise with Daniel Craig.
For me Pierce Brosnan is still my favourite Bond and I still enjoy watching his other Bond films they're just not as good as Goldeneye. Denise Richards playing Nuclear Physicist Christmas Jones was a particular highlight of the later films although Bond surfing a tsunami over the melting ice being chased by big phaser beam from space was definitely a low point for the series.

What's the best James Bond movie?

Growing up, my mother never allowed us to watch any 007 movies because she said he'd make us misogynists. Because of this, I haven't watched any James Bond movies until yesterday, when I watched Casino Royale for the first time. It was some of the most fun I've had watching a movie and I want to know what to watch next (besides the rest of the Craig movies).

For the most part, Quantum of Solace was not a bad movie.

To be fair, it wasn’t much of a great runner up to casino royale. But overall it was definitely not the best nor the worst James Bond movie. I think casino royale set the bar super high and then this just couldn’t reach it. Although I still think the start and the end of the movie was great besides the villain which kept screaming like a girl lmfao. The middle of the movie was not bad but the action and the ending was very good to be honest. Only thing I’d say is that this movie showed Bond a little too dark and careless as if he completely lost his morals and character in a way. Overall the movie was pretty good. I rewatched this again for the first time in a while and it was not that bad. Same thing with spectre. Spectre wasn’t bad at all it was just execution like sometimes I felt the movie was a little dry and wasn’t as rich in story and dialogue like skyfall.

What are your unpopular opinions about James Bond movies?

I personally like Spectre and Quantum of Solace. Jaws was the best villain of The Spy Who Loved Me, not the other dude. Domino from Thunderball would probably be the most beautiful Bond girl. Tatiana, From Russia with Love wasn't the most beautiful, pretty enough but there was something off about her face. Live and Let Die is my favorite Roger Moore movie, and The World is Not Enough is my favorite Brosnan movie, I also like Die Another Day. Christmas Jones from The World is Not Enough was a dreadful character, and Elektra was the best character of that movie.

New fan here. Watched 12 Bond films over the past two months. Here are my thoughts.

I've always known about Bond. As a boy, I was an avid GoldenEye N64 player and, like all my peers, loved Austin Powers. But that's really where the education ends.
In my late-teens and twenties, I became averse to action films. So by the time Casino Royale would've been released, I'd have been much more interested in, say, the latest Sofia Coppola flick.
However, in the intervening years, I've mellowed out. And during the quarantine, I've started consuming movies I've missed out on. Eventually, I landed on Casino Royale. It ignited my Bond fascination and I immediately began poring over this sub to find out which films I should watch/avoid.
That said, my Bond journey is a little chaotic. Maybe a little predictable. But here are my thoughts—in the order that I watched them—with a score that does not necessarily reflect the film's quality or impact on the franchise, but how much I enjoyed it (taking in consideration the time period, etc.)
First, I tackle the Daniel Craig oeuvre:

Maybe because it's my first, maybe because there's a bit of recency bias... But to me, it has the best writing, pacing, characterization, and cinematography of all the Bond films I've seen—and arguably the best Bond girl.

Sure, it has problems—notably the third act—and both the villain and Bond girl aren’t particularly memorable but Craig is mesmerizing and the pacing is great. It probably helps that I watched it immediately after Casino Royale.

The third act has some pacing problems but aside from that, it’s damn near perfect. Deakins' cinematography is breath taking.

The first half is much better than I expected based on reviews, but the latter devolves into disappointingly amateurish writing and blockbuster cliches. Also, is it just me or did Craig and Léa Seydoux have zero chemistry?

Out of Craig films. So I decided to go to another heralded film, primarily because it was directed by Martin Campbell, who helmed Casino Royale...

Bronsan isn't given much to work with in terms of dialogue, but is still quite enjoyable. The story, villain(s), set pieces, and cinematography are all top notch, even if the score isn't.

Quite enjoyed that. Let's do the next Bronsan...

A jarring drop in overall quality and plausibility. Awful cinematography, silly gadgetry, a paltry villain—a complete chore to get through.

Yikes, let's back up. I'm ready to try the tried-and-true classics....

Outdated action sequences and effects aplenty, but the story is great, the cinematography is often stunning and Connery is fantastic. I get why he has the reputation he did—it wasn't just that he was Bond first.
Razor-sharp Bond flick without any of the silliness that Goldfinger proudly wore. I can't stress how much I enjoyed Robert Shaw in this role; he's a top tier villain. The train scene was a major highlight.

Now I'm becoming curious about Timothy Dalton's tenure...

Dalton soars as Bond, veering surprisingly close to Craig’s performance at times. The villain is unmemorable, but there's something about this film that kept me engaged. Hard to put my finger on.
I was ready for more Dalton, but this was not my cup of tea. A sloppy hodgepodge of 80s trends de jour (Sharks! Drugs! Exotic locale!) Dalton is excellent, but can’t deter from overall subpar acting, a drab color palette and poor set design.

I need to get the bad taste out of my mouth. I heard this next film was severely underrated...

Nice blend of silliness, over-the-top action mixed with some some gritty moments, and so-bad-they're-good puns. Yes, Denise Richards is tragically miscast but… Robert Carlyle is a great villain. The Bond and M relationship feels like a precursor to Skyfall.

Though I've been noticeably avoiding the Moore films out of lack of interest, my good friend told me this next film is in his top 5...

Christ, what was that opening? Score sounds like something out of Rocky. I don't dislike Moore at all, but this story is so bland. I can't even score it because even after finishing 75% of it, I can't bring myself to finish.

~~~ thanks for reading, sorry for the novel. Any recommendations for where I should go next?
Casino Royale is the best Bond film...yet
Because of the quarantine, I was able to watch (rewatch for some) all James Bond films -- from Dr. No to Spectre. Taking all aspects into consideration, I firmly believe that Casino Royale is the best James Bond film.
Daniel Craig embodied the character fully. He's intense yet cool, serious yet charming, and at times, very, very funny.
Martin Campbell's direction was impeccable. His overall tone for the movie was pitch perfect.
Eva Green, Dame Judi, Tobias Menzies, Jeffrey Wright and of course, Mads Mikkelsen were an outstanding supporting cast.
And dare I say Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" is the best Bong theme song so far. I involuntarily clapped when I heard it play because it's placement in the film was flawless.
This movie is 10/10 in my book.
Dr No (1962) Rating - 45/100
Link to my original post
And we’re off! My journey has finally begun on my quest to watch all of the Bond movies in a year. So we’re rolling back the clock almost 60 years back to 1962 to watch the first iteration of Bond in the very first film. Dr No is a film that I have seen before, possibly ten or so years ago. So my memory of it was hazy at best. Going into it I had a vague memory of a couple of key scenes but couldn’t actually remember any of the plot, which was actually quite exciting. I knew the villain but didn’t know his motives or plan which meant it felt almost like the first time I was seeing it.
So let’s get into it, here are my ratings and thoughts of each category.
Overall this film was enjoyable. It did feel like a slightly stripped back version of Bond but you can definitely still identify it as a very Bond film. You can also see how this movie was so popular when it first came out. Bond is a cool, suave ladies man that goes to exotic locations and fights baddies. What's not to like? I think this film should be taken for what it is and that is the first building block in the franchise that everything after it grows bigger and more extravagant from. And although it might not have all of the features that we have come to expect from a Bond film, it still is an important movie in the franchises history.
Total - 45/100
Skyfall and Beyond
So I love James Bond movies especially all the Pierce Brosnan ones and I always liked Daniel Craig and Casino Royale and I just could never sit and finish Quantum of Solace. Recently I did get to finish it and I held out watching Skyfall and Spectre for the longest but I finally watched Skyfall
So Skyfall and I absolutely loved it. But my question is that Skyfall and beyond has nothing to do with Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace right?
I wanna play too! (My top 10)
I'm gonna go with reverse reveal (al a David Letterman)
Brief context. Without fail almost every year for about the last 10 years I have watched every Bond movie but not always in release order, just in the order of how I feel like watching. Now that I have completed my 2020 rewatch, I saw other top tens, I decided to play too!
  1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
I never know how to feel some years with this movie. I do think it's incredibly important and I do think it's got a weird structure to the narrative that I think messes with the flow. While I enjoy the meta humor at the beginning, I do think it's a bit heavy-handed and unnecessary but it does sneak in as my number 10. It kind of jostles with The living daylights and Spectre for that ten spot
  1. Moonraker
While I agree that the spy who loved me is a ton of fun, I still come back to Moonraker as a more enjoyable film. It doesn't take too many lulls in the action and it has a far more interesting villain than its predecessor while still maintaining Jaws as a carryover. I love the set pieces and the rationale of killing humanity is, both a scary thought, and a sort of Thanos like mission.
  1. License to Kill
First and foremost, I am a big Timothy Dalton fanboy. I think he was a severely underrated. I think between his two outings, I prefer this movie. Very rarely would you see the main character take those sort of hits and punches and cuts and scrapes but in Dalton's time Bond was his most dark and real. And those are the qualities I think I appreciate in comparison to the more campy feel of Roger Moore.
  1. Tomorrow Never Dies
While I think Pierce Brosnan maybe had two films that were good, I think those good films were exceptionally good. And this film still speaks to the issues of today because of how great and scary a villain like Jonathan Carver is in the now reality of fake news. This was so ahead of its time and I think my appreciation for it only grows with every passing year that I watch it.
  1. Casino Royale (2006)
So if it wasn't already obvious that my enjoyment of Dalton has led to my very real enjoyment of Craig. Call it a reboot if you want or not I just still enjoy it. Love the opening sequence, love the opening track, love the banter with Vesper and how that plays out through the film. And then re-watching it with that knowledge almost makes these small choices in the film more interesting. I noticed more details that were really clever when I would rewatch this.
  1. Thunderball
I'm just going to get this out of the way before you work your way down to the end. I do not like From Russia with Love. I think it's boring. That movie puts me to sleep every time I watch it. But Thunderball I enjoy it so much. I love that it continues the Spectre lore. I love the locations, the vibrancy of the scene. Yes, sure, you can easily make an argument that the climactic fight scenes at the end are bit meh and I'll concede that but I think I just enjoyed so much of this film that it makes up for it. I think I just enjoyed a movie where Bond was actually trying to be a detective.
  1. Live and Let Die
This may be a random addition to some but something about Live and Let Die just sticks with me. I so badly wanted that villain to succeed because I thought it was really clever and unique at how they set up his plot. The henchman are so much more interesting than most other villains we get in this franchise. And yes I can totally agree that there are questions regarding the black-splotation that this is being inspired out of but given what existed in bond up to that point I enjoyed at least having that injection of diversity, not just in plot, but also in cast. It also moves away from the spectre stuff to talking about drug cartels and diplomatic manipulations was really different and refreshing.
  1. Goldfinger
I mean, what is there to say? So much of the iconography of this franchise was born out of this film. This is definitely one of the Bonds I can easily just throw on any day, at anytime, and enjoy it every time. I enjoy the plot and the villain's machinations. I love the song. The car and chase scenes are incredibly iconic and it's also one of the few films that is latent with critical acclaim and awards as well. So while many other films have come since I still stand by a Goldfinger as one of the best.
  1. Goldeneye
I know I've seen some chatter in this subreddit about the importance of The Spy Who Loved Me and I would say that this film holds just as much of that importance. If you go and read about the history of this film, everything was on the line. Great track for an opening sequence, iconic moments and scenes with some sharp lines, excellent villains and henchwomen. And sure while I wish Sean bean didn't have to die in every film, I thought he was so good in this. Then given the recent events of that satellite installation actually falling apart to this past year kind of adds a little extra sting to re-watching it.
  1. Skyfall
I do think that maybe I'm one of the few that really thinks this film checks every box and just knocked it out of the park. Aside from what felt like a throwback to the old days when you have Adele singing that opening track, that is so haunting and moving. A film where Daniel Craig's Bond seems so much more Mutlu dimensional. And then having the last of the pieces (Mallory/Moneypenny/Q) of this new universe coming together before they flip that switch and hit you in the heart at the end of this film. Let alone how good Javier Bardem is and the sort of technical prowess with which he attacked MI6 seems so authentic for our times.
And in short you may have noticed a common theme that a lot of my rankings aren't just about how I think but it is hinged a lot on the villains in these films. Bond is only as good as his adversaries and I think in this collection of 10 films these were some of his best adversaries.
So whether you agree or disagree I do appreciate you following my random brain droppings and I'm excited to read other people's top 10s beyond that. I hope you all are doing well staying safe and enjoy this coming year. I hope it is nothing but good tidings for you all and come next Thanksgiving I'll be rewatching these all again!
James Bond movies?
Hey guys, I, too, am sruck in the house because of the stupid quarantine and trying to make the most of it, I've been watching movies I've never seen.
In that category falls 007's movies. I dont know anything about his moves. I have never seen any movie of his and just wanted to know which movies I should watch so I can continue on with No Time To Die. I know that I should watch Skyfall and Casino Royale, other than that, none....
Please suggest me movies of 007 that are good and contribute to the story of No Time To Die.
Thanks
James Bond vs Jason Bourne: The Superior Franchise
Months ago some of you guys requested that I evaluate Jason Bourne and James Bond, but not in the typical "who would win in a fight" method. Rather, who has the better franchise? To make it even, I considered only the Daniel Craig Bond films, which makes it 4 movies vs 4 movies (excluding the Jeremy Renner Bourne movie). So the films:
Bond: Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre
Bourne: The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, Jason Bourne
In order to approach this comparison, I identified several categories. I believe that these films all did the following categories well. They are also central elements to each film. After much deliberation I determined:
Spycraft
Protagonist
Combat (including guns/vehicles/hand to hand)
Stunts
Themes
Antagonists
Supporting Characters
Overall, this is pretty close. I made my case in detail here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C1Dwun6MI4
I understand the video is long, but it's the only way to compare 8 movies adequately. If you don't have the time, the bottom line is that the Bourne movies are more formulaic than I thought. Interestingly, the Daniel Craig Bond movies are less formulaic. Bond is more "spectacular" in regard to antagonists, stunts, and combat. Bourne is more realistic. The true quality differences emerge in the depth of protagonist and supporting characters.
So...... what do you think?
Nostalgia and Bond Eras
I recently have rewatched several Connery, Moore, and Brosnan Bond movies and understood how these eras have been looked back on so fondly over time. Connery has generally been considered the "golden era" Bond but Moore and Brosnan's movies are typically seen as underwhelming and inconsistent by most. However, I believe a big part of the reception of those movies improving is nostalgia for the time periods they were released in. Roger Moore's 70s and 80s movies remind people how cool and fun those times were, same with Brosnan's 90s movies. Bond movies are like time capsules for their time period, all of this is nothing new of course but it made me wonder how the Craig era would fare over time.
I am a big fan of Daniel Craig and Casino Royale and Skyfall are 2 of my favorite Bond movies. However, I realize that his era started in the post 9/11 world and reflect the darker state of the world with less escapism. I don't think people will be as nostalgic for his era because his movies came out in times that are hard to remember fondly. No Time to Die will come out in the midst of a pandemic that surely no one wants to remember.
Long story short, the previous eras have plenty of movies that are not perfect but offer easy watching and memories of simpler times. For as great as Craig has been as Bond, I wonder if his time as Bond will be overlooked due to the events that occurred that most people would like to forget. There's also the fact that the Craig era had a great start with a hard reboot but retconned the movies together to establish continuity, that has made the era more convoluted and makes me wish they stuck with standalone movies after Casino Royale.
I'm eager to hear someone else's thoughts on this.
