How To Play Steam Games Offline/No Internet Offline Mode ...

can you play installed steam games offline

can you play installed steam games offline - win

Can you play single player games installed from another steam account if you're in offline?

My sister wants to try stardew valley, slime rancher, and other single player games that I own, but she's in another city because of college. If she installs the games using my account, then goes into offline mode, would she be able to play them on her computer without interrupting anything on my end? I guess she could just make a steam account and I can gift her some games, but it'd be pretty nice if I could save money for single player games like this.

This Week At Bungie 12/3/2020

Source: https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/49918
This week at Bungie, we prepare for next gen.
It’s been a while since we last spoke. I mean, it hasn’t been too long. We took a quick week off for holiday, but we’re back to the grind. There’s a bit to catch up on. Since the last TWAB, new Exotics have been discovered throughout Europa. Banshee has found new memories. The Deep Stone Crypt has been infiltrated. A dinosaur was sent into space.
Quite a few of you have been asking about raid statistics. It’s always fun seeing how many players took on the challenge for a completion during the first week. We dug through our databases and found some fun stats to share, and we’re happily surprised by how many of you completed your first ever Jacket Quest.
Day 1 Stats (Unique Raid Activity Clears)
Last Wish Garden of Salvation Deep Stone Crypt
4 551 29,814
Launch +10 Days Stats
Statistic Last Wish Garden of Salvation Deep Stone Crypt
Unique Raid Activity Clears 3,555 33,152 258,049
Total Player Hours 2,185,983 2,807,504 7,156,651
Total Kills 338,667,495 446,461,881 1,100,488,566
Total Deaths 32,734,027 42,676,699 85,008,596
A final fun fact: Over 979,680 Guardians unlocked The Lament since the quest went live. That’s a LOT of sword damage.
Now that we’ve covered the time that’s passed, let’s get back to business.

Light Keepers – Charity Update!

Image Linkimgur
Earlier this week we kicked off our Game2Give Light Keepers charity initiative and, to no one’s surprise, the Destiny community has shown up in force. We also announced our charity milestone rewards, one of which you’ve already unlocked. In case you missed it, say hello to the concept art of our upcoming Dawning 2020 Titan universal Ornament.

Return of the Banner

With the raid done and dusted, Lord Saladin is ready to get Guardians back into the Iron Banner. This will be the first Iron Banner to feature Stasis powers, so we’re all excited for what’s to come.
Image Linkimgur
For any New Lights out there, Iron Banner is a limited time 6v6 Crucible activity with Power-enabled combat. While artifact power is disabled, you’ll want to infuse and equip your most powerful gear before jumping in.
Similar to Control, there are three zones on the map for your team to capture. The more zones you hold, the more points you get when defeating Guardians. If your team is brave enough to capture all three zones, the opposing team will be locked out of capturing zones for a short duration. In other words, this is your time to shine while your enemies cower in fear.
To say it clearly, capping those zones is one of the most important things you can do. Stay close to your teammates, slay your enemies, and enjoy the spoils of victory!
Lord Saladin can be found in The Tower, offering Iron Banner bounties with pinnacle-powered rewards. If you’d like to adorn your Guardian in Iron Banner-themed loot, he’s got you covered. Two weapons from the first year of Destiny 2 have been reprised, now featuring random rolls! Additionally, the Iron Will armor set is making its return, updated to accept new combat mods.
Image Linkimgur
Iron Banner begins at 9 AM on December 8, running through 9 AM on December 15.
Truth be told, you’ll be downloading an update right before Iron Banner becomes available. You know what that means? It’s time for a patch note preview.

Beyond Light Exotics
  • Icefall Mantle
    • Fixed a bug where the Icefall Mantle's description did not mention the slow field it generates when activated.
  • Mask of Bakris
    • Improved the readability of the visual effects when another player wearing Mask of Bakris shifts directly toward you.
    • Updated the description string of Mask of Bakris's perk to correctly describe its damage bonus, which applies only to combatants and affects all Arc weapon damage and all damage against slowed or encased enemies.
      • Additionally, fixed an issue where this damage bonus was applying to players who are slowed or encased in Crucible and Gambit.
  • Necrotic Grip
    • Fixed an issue where being killed by the effects of Necrotic Grip would show as being "Killed by the Architects."
We’ll have a full list of patch notes ready to go on December 8 when the patch becomes avaailble for download. Speaking of availability…

  • Below is a list of some issues expected to be resolved with Update 3.0.1:

  • The Adored Sniper Rifle cannot be reacquired from the Collections.
**KNOWN ISSUES *
While we continue investigating various known issues, here is a list of the latest issues that were reported to us in our #Help Forum:

  • In the Last Wish raid, players will get the “Place Relic” prompt for Riven’s Heart even if they aren’t holding it.
  • The Binary System ornament for Symmetry disables enemy highlighting in seeker mode.
  • Some players are being forced to reacquire the Cryptolith Lure every time they launch the game.
  • Major enemies that drop Moon weapon parts aren’t spawning.

  • Kills with the Jade Rabbit Exotic Scout Rifle no longer auto-refill its magazine.
  • The Halcyon Visage Exotic Sparrow takes shaders poorly.
  • The Selfie Emote functions poorly on ultrawide monitor setups.
  • The Wisdom of the Witch Triumph no longer counts progress.
  • Some players cannot progress past the first mission of A Guardian Rises.
  • The Drifter sometimes misgenders players in idle dialogue and Gambit dialogue.
  • Eris still has a Weekly Challenge for some players. This Weekly Challenge intentionally does not provide a Powerful reward.
  • Flawless Execution on the Way of the Wraith Hunter subclass has a delayed trigger.
  • Resetting Valor rank on step 4 of 5 on the Light Reforged Crucible quest prevents future Valor earned from being recorded for the quest.
  • Multiple ships have their rocket effects floating behind the ship model.
  • Shiver Strike Titan melee does not function with the Heavy Handed mod.
  • Collections go back to the main menu instead of to the previous section.
  • HDR isn’t working as intended.
  • We’re investigating player reports that their veteran dialogue has been replaced with new character dialogue.

Don’t Fall for an Imposter

Since the Deep Stone Crypt raid went live, we’ve been watching numerous fireteams take on the challenge. For some, it was their first trip through pinnacle content in Destiny 2. Exploring new zones, encountering new bosses, and earning new loot is always exciting! For others, this was an opportunity to take things to the limit by taking on the challenge solo. Who needs a backpack?

Next week will be our final TWAB of the year. We’re entering a period where many of our employees will be spending time with family, celebrating the end of a year, and recharging for what’s to come in 2021. We’ll still be around to respond to your feedback, process bug reports, and keep the servers running.
Now, it’s time for me to raid. Looking for a better roll on my Trustee scout rifle from the Deep Stone Crypt. Any suggestions?
Cheers,

Destiny 2 Next-Gen-Patch & Maintenance Megathread [2020-12-08]

Sign-On has been reenabled & servers are slowly booting up - you might see a queue / "at capacity" messages.

All such posts will be redirected here.

(Background) Maintenace will last another hour (until 1900 UTC).

Hey Guardians,
Here's a megathread for the upcoming maintenance that will bring us Update 3.0.1 & the Next-Gen-Patch (PS5 & Xbox Series X|S only). All posts about the maintenance & next-gen-patch will be redirected to this thread.

Downtime will begin when this thread is one hour old. Some features of third party apps (like DIM) could be disabled right now.

Game Downtime is 1 HOUR (until DAILY RESET). Maintenance will take another hour after that to complete.

Most of the time the game is (more or lessContacting Destiny servers...) playable during the ongoing Maintenance after the Downtime is over

Patch & Patchnotes should hit at DAILY RESET as well.

Please note that maintenance isn't fully over until one hour after reset, which means third party apps (like DIM, and your beloved DTG_Bot) might not completely work until then!

Next-Gen-Patch

A highlight of this patch is free Next-Gen-Support for PS5 & Xbox Series X|S, for all those lucky enough to snag one. Here is what you can expect (please read this article for all details):
Feature Xbox Series X PlayStation 5 Xbox Series S
Resolution 4K 4K 1080p
Framerate 60fps 60fps 60fps
120hz Crucible Support Supported* Supported* Not Supported
Field of View Slider Yes Yes Yes
Faster Load Times Yes Yes Yes
Cross-Generation Play Yes Yes Yes
* For supported platforms, 120hz Crucible requires a 120hz compatible display. When enabled, Destiny 2 switches to 120hz, lowers resolution, and lowers some advanced graphics settings upon entering a Crucible match. All other modes remain at 4k/60fps.
Please note that affected consoles are required to basically re-download the entire game as soon as the patch is available:
  • Xbox Series X|S 3.0.1’s patch download size: ~70.0 GB
  • PlayStation 5 3.0.1’s patch download size: ~67.0 GB
  • Xbox One 3.0.1’s patch download size: ~2.35 GB
  • PlayStation 4 3.0.1’s patch download size: ~2.09 GB
  • Steam 3.0.1’s patch download size: ~1.5 GB
There has been no indication that deleting the game has any benefit, so keep it installed and just let it copy the patch over it!

On Epic's 2nd anniverary, let's look back at what has happened in the last ~365 days

EDIT 1: Added more sources, more info, corrected some typos.
I want to make a follow up to this post, in hopes of chronicling Epic's 2nd year as a "store". I will most likely forget things, so please let me know if there's things I can add. You can also check the 2020 sticky for even more info
1) After purchasing Psyonix, Rocket League has gone free to play, has lost Mac and Linux support, have changed the UI to something people don't like. They've also required you to use an Epic account, even if you're still playing on Steam. They have also removed the crate/keys system and replaced it with a generic FOMO rotating item shop a la Fortnite. Not to mention that within hours of Rocket League moving to Epic Online Services, the game essentially didn't work at all. They also had to bribe people with a $10 coupon to claim (not even install) a popular free to play game.
1.5) Speaking of Epic Online Services, it turns out that it's really, terribly badly designed, and any game using it as a backbone can be taken apart pretty easily
2) Like every other "feature" they rush out and barely works, the mod support they've added is in beta, and only works with one game right now.
3) Similar to Mods, they've also released a wishlist for their store, almost a year and a half after launch, but for some reason has a completely arbitary 50 item limit
4) They've also added achievements, but as is tradition for Epic they are implemented in such a bad way that you can only look at your achievements while in game using a keyboard shortcut. What's even funnier is that it took Epic longer to add achievements in 2019/2020 than it did Steam over a decade ago. I guess the technology just isn't there yet?
5) Still no shopping cart, community forums, reviews, profiles, universal chat and many other features consumers expect as basic features in 2020
6) Two years into their store and the stability of the store/client goes to shit for everyone randomly, and especially when a Fortnite event is happening, preventing paying customers from accessing the products they own
7) Their launcher is randomly causing certain Ryzen CPUs to idle about 20C higher than normal if you just have the launcher open. Epic has since clarified it's a "bug" and a fix is on the way
8) The amount of games Epic is nabbing as exclusives is dropping hard. Is it because the studios don't see it as beneficial? Or is it because Epic is realizing that continuing to bleed money for games no one is buying probably isn't smart to do for two years straight? Maybe it's both
9) Fall Guys alone has earned more in revenue for the devs alone in 22 days what Epic has earned from 130+ games combined in a year, even with Epic's smaller cut. Proving once again that a lower revenue cut doesn't mean anything if no one buys your products anymore
10) Tim Sweeney, everyone's favorite manchild, continues to spend most of his days arguing with people on Twitter. He also still talks mad shit about the platform even though he's supposedly trying to "save it". Maybe it has something to do with Sony giving them $250 million. I suggest following him on Twitter because he makes a fool of himself constantly. Call him out on some BS and you might have the pleasure of him blocking you from hurting his feelings with the truth, like how the PS5 Unreal demo on PS5 runs better on PC at the same specs/resolution
11) As an adendum to 10, Timmy loves using the official Epic Games Store Twitter account to constantly remind people that they broke broke Apple's "unfair" rules and took them to court when Apple punished them for breaking contract. Currently the lawsuit is pending trial, but so far Epic has been bent over a barrel and spanked by the judges. He has made comments saying his fight with Apple is similar to civil rights, has copied Apple's 1984 commercial, has made a skin in game mocking Tim Cook, and even sent influencers merch to keep their "#freefortnite" trending. This is a long topic, and I suggest watching Hoeg Law's playlist on the matter. It's long, but goes into extreme detail on why Epic's lawsuit is nothing more than tantrum FUD. Apple has since lowered their revenue cut to 15% for apps that make under $1m in revenue a year, which applies to well over 90% of app makers. Naturally, Tim Sweeney is not happy because it was never actually about the cut for smaller devs, he wanted the cut lowered for himself for more money
12) Fortnite has added both an optional subscription to the game on top of a system where you can get rewards for getting friends who've stopped playing to play more. This is all happening while Fortnite is losing revenue month after month, year after year
13) while not closely related to Epic, Tim is still friends with Randy Pitchford, a guy who used a social/racial issue in George Floyd's death to advertise a game about killing pigs (cops), and who’s company recently published a game called Godfall as an Epic exclusive (and the game is pretty terrible too). Randy is notorious in the Epic community, when early on in the launcher he made snide "promises" that Steam would be a dying store in 5 to 10 years, and who said that by the time BL3 launched on Epic, the client would be feature complete (SOURCE NEEDED)
14) Epic Games is still extremely bad at paying pros and creators their earnings due to "payment issues"
15) Probably in order to continue boosting "monthly active users" (The only stat Epic ever gives, as if its important when those users aren't spending money), Epic Games has added Spotify to the client for download.
16) unlike the first year, where Epic released their revenue numbers, top selling games, and other information with tons of doublespeak to hide their horrible performance (The average account spent a little over $2 for the entire year); they have not released 2020 numbers yet.
17) As posted in the previous year roundup's number 14, Epic Games Store still has an issue with Ubisoft games, where if you buy a Ubi game on EGS, and then install it, it will launch Uplay and install the game a 2nd time

If you have anything to add, please let me know and I'll update this post once I wake up.

This week at Bungie, we’re beginning our descent to Europa.
Every release, we have a long conversation about what we should show players leading up to launch, and what we should leave for players to discover. We want to build up the sense of wonder as a new Season or expansion makes its approach without spoiling everything that’s coming. With just a week to go before launch, we’ve almost reached our destination.

Our Beyond Light Launch Trailer went live last week. A ViDoc, exploring Beyond Light and Season of the Hunt, is available for your viewing pleasure. We’ve released our Season of the Hunt calendar to help you plan out your days for the next few months.

All that’s left is a quick preview of patch notes and a maintenance timeline. After that, we leave the rest to you.

It’s All in the Patch

Over the last few weeks, our goals have been to set expectations. We’ve covered the Destiny Content Vault, upcoming Sandbox changes, Gambit tuning, and more. These updates aren’t mind-blowing or overly game changing, they’re just nice little morsels to chew on in the final days leading up to launch. In any case, we hope you like the following quality of life appetizers before your meal is delivered on November 10.
Archives
Beginning November 10, two new kiosks will be available in the Tower. First up, the Quest Archive will be found next to the Postmaster. Our hope is that this removes some of the confusion when trying to track down the odd quest that you previously discarded. Additionally, this will be the place for any veteran players to pick up the New Light Quest on November 10, if they have a strong desire to experience new player tutorials and the (re-)introduction to the Cosmodrome.
Image Linkimgur
Next up, the Monument to Lost Lights Exotic Archive will be found by the Vault. Here, players may acquire various Exotics and Legendary Pinnacle/Pursuit weapons that were once available through now-retired quests. As many of these Exotics were tied to lengthy quests or difficult objectives, we wanted to make sure their prices reflected those previous efforts. Players will need an amount of Glimmer, destination materials, masterworking materials, and an Exotic Cipher or Ascendant Shard in order to purchase the Exotic or Legendary which they desire. We’re also introducing a currency, Spoils of Conquest, which can only be acquired when completing raids. This currency will be required for Exotics previously tied to Vaulted raids.

In the past, Exotic Ciphers were very limited in nature. While you can expect one to be available as part of the Season Pass, Xur will also offer a quest to earn one Exotic Cipher on a weekly cadence.
Now, let's move on to some traditional patch notes...
Crucible
  • Trials of Osiris
    • Trials of Osiris Power level requirement increased to 1210.

  • Guardian head and hair models have been replaced with improved versions.

    • Player’s previous head selections are still used.
Misc
  • Fixed a bug that prevented online friends from showing up in the roster on Stadia for players with more than 100 friends.
  • Fixed a bug that occasionally prevented players from earning progress on bounties when joining an activity in progress.
  • This most notably impacted Iron Banner bounties and could cause players to have their Artifact Power bonus enabled during Iron Banner matches.
A few Sandbox changes that we missed in our Sandbox preview
  • Traveler's Chosen
    • Reduced muzzle flash intensity.
  • Point of the Stag
    • Increased Point of the Stag's Max Power Level to 1310.
  • Divinity
    • Fixed a bug that prevented some weapons from dealing precision damage to the Divinity cage (e.g. Eriana's Vow).
  • Hunter Dodge
    • Increased Hunter's Dodge cooldown by a few seconds.
    • (E.g. Tier 4, old cooldown: 22 sec. New cooldown: 26 sec.)
  • Anti-Champion Mods
    • Anti-barrier rounds will now penetrate Taken Phalanx shields.
    • All Anti-Champion mods have been shifted to armor, rather than taking a weapon mod slot.
  • Orbs of Light have been changed to Orbs of Power as they can now be consumed by Light and Dark subclasses.
Before we end our patch note preview, we do want to call out the collectors among you who have been talking about the impending removal of Expired Ramen Coupons from your inventories. We know this one stings a bit. It’s a byproduct of us cleaning up inventory systems and doing general maintenance.
We want to a provide a parting gift before these coupons are tossed into the bin. These coupons can’t be redeemed for spicy ramen, but they can decorate your desktop for as long as you desire.

Here are your final Movie of the Week selections before Beyond Light brings some Darkness to the table.

— TG DuAc (@TGDuAc1) November 2, 2020
Next week, we’ll have a new companion section for Movie of the Week. We felt it important to give the same spotlight to the artists of our community as we’ve been giving to those who create fun videos.
To throw your hat in the ring, submit your content to the Community Creations portal on Bungie.net. If you also post your content to social media, tag it with #DestinyMOTW or #DestinyArt. We’ll snag a few winners each week and grant them some fancy new emblems.
We’ve been here a few times. What was once months became weeks. Weeks have become mere days. Five more sleeps stand between you and Beyond Light. Well, that’s if you can even sleep the night before launch. I know I probably won’t. Many of you have been on this journey with us from the start. In the last year, numerous Guardians have begun their journey through New Light. No matter how long you’ve been a Guardian, we can’t thank you enough for playing.
Stay hydrated. Be healthy. Treat yourself well.
We’re almost there.
See you starside.

[Let's Build] 1d100 Roommate shenanigans that happen while a ship is traveling FTL

Hey gang! I'm starting a far future sci fi campaign pretty soon and I'd like to add some flavor and RP to FTL travel instead of "seven days pass, you arrive in the system" when there's nothing prepared for the transit. I'm pulling inspiration from the living arrangements of Star Trek, where the personal lives of the characters had a presence in the show during less dangerous times.
Assume FTL transit time is between one and fourteen days, so a handful of people sharing a flat together for that long without going outside (not relatable at all). They all have their own rooms and private bathrooms.
Update 1: This is great stuff guys! Keep it up! Loving it. Update 2: Almost there! Thank you everyone for your submissions so far!
  1. One of the crew is cooking cuisine from their home planet. Another crewmate is allergic to some of the ingredients.
  2. One of the crew is allergic to the pet someone else just picked up from the last planet.
  3. Someone didn't do their chore assigned from the ship chore wheel.
  4. Someone is doing one of their hobbies in the crew rec area. I didn't know you played trombone!
  5. A way to celebrate a holiday for one crewmate is totally different for anothethe rest of the crew. You mean you guys don't eat breakfast for dinner on Christmas???
  6. Someone keeps using up all of the group's allotted holodeck time.
  7. A crew member wants to test a new ai system for the first time...It's got some bugs.
  8. Someone didn't know how to make popcorn. Everything now smells like burnt popcorn.
  9. Someone clogged their toilet and now needs to share with another crewmate.
  10. Character A considers themselves pretty good at a certain board/card game. Character B is fascinated by their skills and asks to be taught. Turns out, B is getter at the game than A.
  11. "You've never had [food] before?!"
  12. One of the aliens doesn't know about hair dye and freaks out when the local human starts losing their color.
  13. Surprise room inspection! Why is one being held? What do the inspectors find?
  14. One of the aliens gets really jazzed about a human religious holiday and it makes people simultaneously flattered and uncomfortable.
  15. "What do you mean [rare chemical] is toxic to [target species]?! My roommate is a [said species]! I've been using it all day!"
  16. The group is trading traditional and cultural horror stories. Some of the members have particularly strong feelings about a couple of the stories.
  17. A small group of crew have decided to throw a dance party in the middle of the recreational room. This is an issue to those who dislike the occasion, and baffles those who don't understand dancing.
  18. A relationship between two crew mates is becoming a bit of an issue.
  19. One of the crew has bought way too hard into an MLM and is peddling their wares to everyone who will listen (and everyone who won't).
  20. Everytime a crewmate is disturbed in their room they're too relaxed. We're talking robe, slippers, essential oils - this crewmate is a chronic, indulgent lounger. THis can be awkward when they need to leave theirr cabin in a hurry, like for emergencies.
  21. Why does this crewmate have restricted military equipment and where did they get it?
  22. The ship is regularly receiving encrypted messages but it's not clear who is reciving them or what they're about. All anyone knows is that the messages are digitally signed by a competitor.
  23. Their pet doesn't really like them and regularly slepes in anyone's quarters it can get into other than its owner's. It is relentless in the early morning when it needs to be let out to pee.
  24. There's a damn space possum somewhere on the ship. It's mostly harmless but rarely detectable except when it chews around an important wire and a system goes down. Sometimes it can be heard scrambling around behind the walls.
  25. All of the furniture in one of the cabins is smashed beyond usability, including the bed. It's not clear if a former or current crewmate is responsible, or if it was damaged in a fit of rage, investigation or raucous party.
  26. The ship likes to play music late at night when it thinks everyone is asleep. The ship's idea of a banging tune sounds more or less like alien ghost whales quietly weeping. Anyone who happens to be up late may begin to believe the ship is haunted.
  27. One of the maintenance droids watches people sleep. This cannot be explained by its programming, or its rudimentary language. What is it thinking?
  28. One of the crew is taking drugs to stay awake for days at a time. It's affecting their job performance but wow do they get a lot of cleaning done!
  29. The, "it's just a prank bro," bro has been setting up borderline dangerous surprises for the other crew and trying to catch their reactions on camera. NOt only is it obnoxious, the vids keep going viral and strangers are starting to recognize the victims.
  30. One of the crewman's culture has a no nudity taboo and they keep forgetting that not everyone feels the same way.
  31. one of the crewman is a compulsive gambler and is constantly betting on everything (or trying to).
  32. One of the crewman notices another crewman has disappeared but no one remembers them and there is no log of them on the ship.
  33. Everyone on the ship has the same dream every night.
  34. For a few days all of the crewman are overtaken with overwhelming feelings of sadness and loss that pass after about 5 minutes.
  35. Jeffery bet he could fit in the vents. He did fit. At least until he got halfway through and is now stuck.
  36. The ship's computer specialist hacks into the ship's computer and programs it to rap all of its responses.
  37. The youngest crew member accidentally locks themselves in the ship's secure vault while trying to avoid chores.
  38. A crewmember is caught with their feet up on the ship's helm, painting their toenails.
  39. Video game tournament!
  40. A crew member regularly plays annoying music in their quarters loud enough that it bothers everyone else.
  41. An extreme version of hide and seek played by two teenagers/preteens slowly gets out of hand. Or maybe it gets the crew divided into team red and blue. Or an alien finds the hand interesting and partakes.
  42. At night you hear two passengers in the neighboring room arguing. Eventually you hear commotion and a thud. One of the roomates is seen an hour later throwing something heavy over board.
  43. Two crew members have obvious crushes on each other and everyone else is trying to get them together. It gets a bit out of hand.
  44. Hoping to increase interest and participation in safety and defense drills, the security chief introduces a new element: NERF guns.
  45. After concerned questions about the amount of time they've been spending in the holodeck, a crewmate finally reveals their magnum opus: a fully realized holodeck emulation of 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons.
  46. Two crewmates who hail from planets with rich improvisational poetic traditions decide to square off and find out who is best. EPIC RAP BATTLE!
  47. In accordance with the traditions of their people, a crewmate is writing their will. This process chiefly takes the form of an auction, where their friends and family bid for the right of first refusal on their personal items and property; on death, the winner pays the bid amount to the family and claims the item, or refuses to pay and the item is sold at an estate sale.
  48. During a deep dive into the ship's archives, a crewmate re-discovers a long-dead band, which then becomes a craze on the ship for the next few days. By day 5, even the people who liked it have had their fill.
  49. "There's... something on the wing! Some, HORRIBLE thing!" "Billy, that's just the nacelle, stop messing around."
  50. An alien offhandedly mentions that they deem the material of the ship not only edible but delicious, freaking everyone out.
  51. An infestation of alien vermin is discovered.
  52. Characters stage an intervention for someone due to a problematic behavior.
  53. The food replicators break and no matter what someone asks for, they produce a perfectly made gin martini and a plastic snack food style package of "Lemon Clams" that automatically steam when opened.
  54. The ship's bio-gel computing packs get infected with an alien virus. Mostly harmless but for 48 hours the ship's AI is essentially drunk and/or experiencing hallucinations.
  55. A group of crew members start a secret fight club team in the holodeck after a member of an away team returns with the idol of a planet's god of war.
  56. There are two chefs on the vessel, they're both convinced one is better than the other (in reality they're both very bad but all the ship's got).
  57. One crewmate gives another an alcoholic beverage from their planet that gets them drunk instantly. However, a night's sleep and water doesn't seem to have any effect at sobering them up.
  58. The grav plating polarity is reversed.
  59. The room-mate's Tellurian Stinging Fleas Farm springs a leak on your bed. Thankfully, the room-mate's Poisonous Chekovian Death Adder LOVES eating them, so they set them free without telling you.
  60. The engineer decides it is necessary to use the communal dining area to clean and decontaminate mildly radioactive life-support parts.
  61. The room-mate's cold progresses to full on "Fast-Zombie" cannibalism.
  62. Fingernail clippings, or similar bodily detritus, wind up scattered all over your bunk.
  63. The roommate uses up every bit of sterile gauze from the emergency first aid kits, in order to pretend that their favorite stuffed animal is a mummy; and doesn't tell anyone they did so.
  64. Someone sets ALL the phasers to stun, as a joke.
  65. Short sheeted your bunk, again, and placed fake Tellaxian feces on the pillow. At least, you HOPE it is fake.
  66. Covered the urinal in the refresher-station with clear cling-film and didn't tell anyone as a prank.
  67. Plays "Yanni" every hour of their shift, non-stop, at full volume.
  68. Someone goes overboard with the label maker, and now there is a painted line down the middle of the corridor and half the crew is forbidden from crossing over to the other half, just to keep the peace.
  69. Fills the supplemental emergency oxygen tank of their buddy's space suit with a bit of Nitrous Oxide and Fart Smell.
  70. One of the crew members makes a meal for everyone else. It becomes painfully obvious shortly into the meal that this crew member can't cook. Several of the team end up with stomach aches.
  71. Somebody brings an unauthorized pet back with them from the last away mission. Once onboard, the pet starts reproducing out of control and quickly overtakes most of the ship.
  72. An experiment in the science lab suddenly teleports everyone in the ship exactly 1 centimeter in a random direction. Ensign Roberts now needs prosthetic feet due to this occurrence, and we won't talk about what happened to Ensign Murphy.
  73. The protein replicators won't stop replicating protein goop that smells like a mixture of sewer gasses and rancid gym socks, despite what settings are used. One crewmember seems to like the taste, and it isn't the one you're thinking of...
  74. One of the crew goes insane, and starts believing that they have mental powers.
  75. One member of the crew REALLY DOES HAVE mental powers, the fact that they can make you explode just by thinking about it, gets around the ship quickly.
  76. One crewmember has been writing a series of holo-sitcoms and secretly using the other crew as templates for characters.
  77. A crew-member starts insisting that this ship and everyone on it, are simply the results of them being trapped on the holodeck.
  78. Literally NOTHING happens. Like one second you are all bored out of your minds, and then BAM you can't remember the last six cycles and more than one of the crew reports waking up in tubs of ice, missing some organs.
  79. The science lab accidentally releases an experimental mixture of alien spores and gaseous mood enhancers; now every fifteen minutes there is a spontaneous musical or dance number happening somewhere on the ship.
  80. Three words: "Quantum Vacuum Spiders." This guy knows what I'm talkin' about, YEAH!!
  81. The Captain decided to add combat-readiness drugs to the water supply to sharpen crew performance. Now the security chief has declared the brig as thier own kingdom and is attacking all challengers.
  82. A security update on the 'droids fails, and suddenly they are all in: "Kill All Humans" mode.
  83. Someone forgets to pay the subscription service for the ship-wide communications network permission license the last time we were docked. Until the ship docks again, we all have to sit through advertisements and take surveys in order to use comms. The advertising song about Tribble-cereal is adorable though!
  84. The Captain has gotten into the habit of ordering the inertial dampeners be taken offline, "in order to get a sense of speed during acceleration". Now we go the same speed, but are crushed into our chairs during the whole trip.
  85. Ever have someone's fart smell so bad you had to vent the whole ship's atmosphere out the airlocks?
  86. Everyone knows it is bad luck to bring bananas on board ship. The last person that did so got thrown out the airlock!
  87. Your roommate won't stop making cruel jokes about "That one alien crew member that totally matches the stereotype for their species."
  88. A crewmember gets drunk and challenges another crewmate with compound eyes to a staring competition. Both wind up in medbay.
  89. It turns out more than half of the crew secretly worship an evil space entity that is slowly warping thier brains with cannibalism, fear, and paranoia. They all keep it secret for fear of being discovered. Then one evil worshiper finds another making a trap in the corridor at the end of shift, and now you're stuck being a contestent in "The Most Dangerous Game" being hunted by the rest of the crew, and possibly the only one not being mind controlled by evil.
  90. There's a new addictive videogame going around that leaves your crewmates as drooling vegetables. You tried it, but didn't see what was so great about it.
  91. Corporate installed pay-toilets on all the refresher units the last time you docked. Now the crew is finding "new" and "inventive" hygiene solutions.
  92. One of the engineering crew discover that corporate has been lowering the oxygen levels in the testing chambers during crew evaluations, "in order to avoid giving raises for performance improvement".
  93. For the duration of FTL, exactly half the crew appears to run backwards in time, with predictable havoc on crew functions and personal relationships. The effect ends as soon as the ship drops out of drift, but neither half of the crew can agree on which half was affected afterwards.
  94. At the last port of call, some orphans snuck aboard. A few crew got caught trying to disguise the kids by having them stand on each other's shoulders inside a resized spacesuit. Spaceman 'Justaguy' will be placed in the brig until the next port of call.
  95. Ensign Ripley receives one demerit for "trying to teach the power loader how to dance" and also one for use of foul language.
  96. The ship is saved after a hull breach is patched with some gravy from the ship's cafeteria. Engineering crewmate Roscoe will be awarded an extra cycle of pay and another food ration for giving up thier "mashed potatoes" during the emergency.
  97. Notice to All Crew: Rumors that the Cafeteria is using Industrial Adhesive as Gravy during Salisbury Steak Night are false.
  98. An anonymous crewmate has doodled waterfowl on every console on the ship. (Who's been drawing ducks?)
  99. A Poker (or other gambling game of your choice) game gets too out of hand and now you got gambling banned on the ship. Good job - you ruined it.
  100. Doctor Hawk made their own homemade distillery out of medical equipment - Major Burnside does not like the mockery of their uniform.

Dear community, I am the author of the following book which I have posted in its entirety.
I like to research my investments thoroughly, so the following is my thesis that this is a 'when, not if scenario'.
As not many seem to want to buy it on Amazon, I am making it available to read in posts below. Enjoy!
If you click on the below link, I am hoping it will move my ebook up the amazon search ranks so non redditors can see it. Thanks. https://www.amazon.com/Planet-Uranium-Beginners-Guide-Market-ebook/dp/B07TCHF7T7/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_pdt_img_top?ie=UTF8

Chapter 9 The Japanese - How it can really go sideways (continued...)
To say it must have been a strange hour (closer to 40 minutes) between earthquake and tsunami would be an understatement. Imagine being a worker there, and all the worries racing through your mind, first I’m sure family and friends would be your main concern, and then the dangers from the earthquake, not knowing initially about the tsunami. Anyone there at the time who knew about the design of the plant and especially depth above sea level must have also had some interesting and disturbing thoughts run through their minds. Originally, the plant was to be built on a bluff around 35m above sea level, then during the construction stage, some genius decided it would be better for earthquake proofing and save on pumping if the plant was lowered. It sounds logical and the type of idea that someone got a decent end of year bonus for.
There was also a seawall installed on site. Again a slight issue with height, when the wall is 10m and the wave that struck was over 14m. In fact, determining seawall height centered more on typhoon considerations and the waves that they can whip up - and I was pretty sure tsunami is a Japanese word. Now if those factors weren’t enough in that hour to get your heart pumping here is the little matter of backup generators, which leads us to the question, is there any such thing as waterproof diesel generators? If not, there should be along with all the other electrical parts which make up part of your emergency pumping systems. The keyword here is backup, backup for what? Worst case scenario which brings us nicely back to, a black swan event. Nobody saw it coming quite like this. Incidentally, this power plant is not the only one that got hit. There were two others on the same coast, but they were okay and managed to get to cold shutdown.
So let’s think about post-tsunami and an hour after the earthquake. It’s all rather wet. Also, the water is starting to recede in the reactor which needs water to keep it cool. Once the water reduces around the core, the core starts to melt. The core contains both uranium and the fuel assemblies which are made of zirconium. When zirconium melts in the presence of water you get hydrogen building up in a contained area and eventually...bang, and that is what typically explodes, not uranium (as might be popularly assumed), and that is what happened at the site in Japan.
The disaster management was a fiasco, apparently this type of disaster wasn’t in the manuals so someone needed to use their initiative. Now maybe, when you have been in an industry for many years where using your initiative is not encouraged, after all, do you really want mavericks operating a nuclear plant by trying new things out?, maybe a bit of ‘MacGyver’ could be just what’s required. Either way, with twelve of the thirteen backup generators down and only one working, It took two weeks for the workers to get the 3 units that had been out of control to ‘stable’. Some ten months later they were declared to be in cold shutdown status which is a lot longer than the usual four days.
In actual fact, there were two waves that hit at 8-minute intervals. The reactors which would normally produce heat and that heat be conveyed away through steam and water is trapped and building up rapidly, a bit like a pressure cooker. Some of the pressure was released by means of safety valves but the steam is radioactive so ideally, it needs to be contained or released to a location that won’t damage the environment. Some of this radioactive material did leak into the environment.
On a slight tangent (but it’s worth it), the sister nuclear plant down the road was battling with issues too. You might think if you’re ‘running’ a disaster with such a far-reaching impact - after all, they were thinking of evacuating Tokyo a city with a population of nine million, that you would have a red phone where you could call for support for stuff that might be useful, beyond champagne and olives. And the guy running the show down the road did request some water from the government. Seeing as things were hot to the point of almost melting that sounds like a reasonable request. He asked for 4,000 tonnes of water. Someone got their wires crossed, and this might just be the greatest example of a communication breakdown in recent times, as one solitary truck rolled in with just 4 tonnes or 4,000 liters of water. Apparently, someone thought the workers must have been thirsty. How disappointing to be short 3,996 tonnes of what you ordered while trying to avert a nuclear disaster.
At that point, apparently, Masuda (the guy running the show) said “Don’t rely on others. Let’s do things by ourselves.” An interesting response in itself - maybe it was in the manual.
Earlier we discussed how the futures market allows a utilities company to hedge against the risk of uranium prices going up in the future, in the context of this chapter we see the utilities too can become the risk. In the fallout of the Fukushima event we zoom forward to 2017 when TEPCO, the Japanese power company terminated a supply contract with Cameco valued at $1 billion. TEPCO says they can legally do this due to something called ‘force majeure’ which is a legal term which basically says if an unforeseeable event occurs, you can walk away from the contract. Cameco is now chasing them in the courts for damages in the region of $680 million.
Zooming out from the event, the implications for the price of uranium was not good. Nuclear reactors in Japan were shut down or had been destroyed, so less demand. This also meant the Japanese were oversupplied. A country typically always keeps some stockpiles in front of their immediate demands to ensure some future supply security. Prices were starting to go up because China was planning to build more nuclear plants and then with Fukushima, the price went from around $60 to around half that by 2014. Since then there is more power generated today globally (2019) by nuclear power than before Fukushima, the prices, however, have not bounced back.
Globally public confidence was damaged which made countries reconsider how they were using and had planned to use nuclear power to generate electricity. That was part of the reason why uranium prices dropped so much and something similar could happen again. If you have money or are planning to put money into uranium, watch out for the big bad black swan.
Chapter 10 Underfeeding - ‘why don’t you explain this to me like I’m five’
This chapter title should be familiar to fans of 'The Office', if you haven’t seen this hilarious scene, search it on YouTube, it’s well worth watching. Explaining something seemingly simple or complicated can be useful if we break it down and try to keep it simple. The following is complicated and here is my attempt to break it down to understandable parts and I hope this works for the reader.
So you may think uranium comes out of the ground and gets used once, but it’s not that simple. This is where we need to understand what a SWU or Separative Work Unit is. So earlier we discussed spinning centrifuges and the good stuff goes to the top and center and is then a bit richer and moves to the next centrifuge and the same again, over and over again. Typically, this moves the U235 from 0.7% to in the region of 3.5% to 5%, we're talking a lot of centrifuges and a lot of spinning.
Now for a bit of trivia, how much would a centrifuge cost if available on eBay? They’re not, I checked, estimates on the internet go from $13,000 to $20,000 and you need many - literally thousands of them.
Ok so back to SWU, that is the amount of work to produce a kg of uranium to a given percentage such as from 0.7% to 5%. That makes sense because to spin it will cost you a lot of electricity. So you spin it and you get two parts, enriched material at 3% to 5% and the waste at around 0.2% to 0.3%. In theory and practice, you could take the waste and spin it for more enriched material. This is called underfeeding. Of course, more spinning means more power usage, so at some point it becomes uneconomical and you are better off sticking to the standard feed material of 0.7%.
Here is a slightly imaginary (but not that imaginary) scenario which may help us understand the economics of underfeeding. The spinners are only allowed to produce so much a year. Let’s imagine that the spinning never ends, it always on for the whole year - 24/7. Lets then say they reach close to their quota in September of how much they are permitted to produce using standard 0.7% feed which cost money to buy and they also have a mountain load of ‘waste’ out the back at 0.2% to 0.3% concentrations. They want to run down the clock until the end of the year and if they keep using standard feed, the centrifuges will sit with nothing inside them for the last few months so at that point they decide to put in the waste and run down the clock cause ‘waste’ is ‘free’ versus using the 0.7% feed.
That is similar to what happens to make the actual production numbers difficult to estimate. Of course, if the price of the 0.7% feed increases then the waste out the back might be used more, as it has now become cheaper in relation to what they are paying for the standard stuff.
Gas centrifuge plants use around 50 - 60 kWh to make 1 SWU, that is to say, to get a kg of uranium to the enriched stage (3-5%) from the ‘natural’ stage (0.7%). I’m now going to choose UK prices here because US state prices are all over the show. In the UK a KWh will cost around USD 0.76 at wholesale prices from the supplier (ignoring negotiation for a better price) so 60 kWh will cost you around USD 0.76 x 60 = USD 46. We are saying 1 SWU will cost $46. If the power station needs nuclear fuel of say 25 tonnes for the year, then the spinner will get an electricity bill for enriching that amount in the region of 12 million dollars ($46 x 25,000 tonnes). Again, this shows uranium in the ground to the point of actually generating electricity is not as simple or as cheap as it may initially sound. It also sounds a bit circular, generating electricity for generating electricity, I’m thinking chicken and egg syndrome at this point.
Here is another factor to think about it. The power plant reduces their demand for enriched uranium which is called LEU (lower enriched uranium), so the spinners have no real reason to spin but they do anyway, but they use the waste out the back instead of buying from the miners / U3O8ers / UF6ers which depresses the prices of uranium while at the same time increasing the amount of LEU available for when there is a demand, that is a double whammy for the miners and we call that inventory, or at least another source of inventory. Somebody will go bankrupt and that is what has happened, miners and enrichers too, or if not bankrupt, at the very least they are offline.
So when SWU price is low that means the spinners/enrichers are not getting paid much and there is an opportunity to underfeed when the price goes up. Concerning enrichment, we have already mentioned that U3O8 is at 0.7% uranium and that we need it to go to 3-5% to get it ready for the nuclear reactor (LEU) and then sometimes it’s enriched to 20% for research purposes.
Then there is HEU which stands for highly enriched uranium at the 90% region and that is used for weapons. So an interesting question is how much SWU does it take to enrich it to HEU in comparison to LEU? For LEU we can say around 850 SWU/ tonne and HEU its around 1300 SWU/ tonne based on WNA numbers and at our British electricity wholesale rates mentioned earlier let's say a tonne of LEU will cost $39,000 and HEU $59,000 which illustrates it doesn’t take much to get from LEU to HEU.
All numbers shown here are very rough and for illustration purposes, prices change and other variables come into play, for example, storage and disposal are two factors that enrichers need to consider when dealing with uranium.
At times, LEU goes to HEU and back again to LEU and so lets understand how this happens. When two ‘advanced’ nations get uptight with one another, it’s quite possible they will want to create weapons and even overproduce them. Think US and Russia or even India and Pakistan.
With 15,000 nuclear weapons on the plant today, that is enough to wipe out mankind many times over which will never happen because you can only wipe out an ant colony once - once it’s gone, it’s gone. Anyway, later when relations cool between the protagonists there is a chance they may want to do something about the ‘overproduction’ of weapons.
This is pretty much what occurred with a proportion of the nuclear grade uranium/plutonium between 1993 to 2013. This is of interest to us because if we bring in another supply stream to an existing market, it may create an oversupply and that is what happened in this instance. HEU which is around 90% U235 was blended in with other less enriched uranium and used to make electricity. It seems to be much more sensible use of the material I’m sure we would all agree.
Could this happen again in the future? Possibly. No one really knows but the power companies must have been delighted to be getting, arguably, a cheaper priced product. The initiative between the two states occurred during a thawing of a rather cool relationship (that’s why they called it the cold war) and going forward for it to occur again, there would likely have to be good relations between the two nations. Experts feel that is presently not the situation. So although it‘s unlikely to occur in the near future, it’s a piece on the board that we do well to remember could move at some future time again.
You will also hear about something called MOX in the uranium space. MOX stands for mixed oxide fuel and is a mix of uranium and plutonium oxide. When we use the word plutonium we are in the realm of highly enriched fuel (HEU) and that means military grade. So before we come to MOX we need to understand where plutonium comes from. Earlier we said that the stuff that fissions is U235 but that the percentage is only 3-5% in the reactor which means the rest is U238 and when this in the reactor a small fraction changes to become plutonium, specifically Pu239, and most of the plutonium fissions along with the U235 to generate heat and make electricity which sounds fine so far.
Pu239 is what was dropped on Nagasaki in World War II and was very, very unpleasant for the people living there at the time - think mushroom clouds. Pu239 cannot penetrate human skin but again eating or snorting it is not recommended. A dozen milligrams will probably kill you. A single grain of quartz sand with a two-millimeter diameter weighs around the same, just to give some perspective of what we are talking about here.
The day eventually arrives when the reactors need to be refueled with new pellets and so the used fuel can be sent for waste disposal but there is also an opportunity to recycle. One way to do this is to separate the plutonium and recycle it with depleted uranium and, hey presto, we have MOX.
Earlier we mentioned the deal that the US and Russia had done to recycle their weapons and this is the way that this is done using MOX. Currently, 5% of new nuclear fuel is MOX and in France, the figure is double that. People these days love the idea of recycling so that’s what this sounds like to me, more recycling. MOX fuel is yet another ‘supply stream’ that makes the whole ‘we mined one lemon and spent two lemons in the reactor’ argument much more complicated than to just say the supply and demand is between miners and users. The plot thickens yet again.
Chapter 11 Moving parts - The art of thoughtful disagreement
The expression ‘the art of the thoughtful disagreement’ comes from Ray Dalio, a brilliant hedge fund manager who surrounds himself with people who disagree with him, not for the sake of causing division, but in order to improve the chances of avoiding mistakes when his firm invests. If you like the bullish case, spend as much time as possible looking for the bear case too. Your decisions will be more informed.
The time has finally arrived to start arguing with oneself (and others, if you like). That is to say, set out why you should and should not invest in uranium. So far we have seen that there are more moving parts to this uranium business than mining and throwing rocks into the furnace of a power plant (which won’t get you very far either way). Explorers, miners, producers, enrichers, and users. It's an intricate web where you pull one strand and it affects the system in some other place.
Saying we are positive about the prospects of the uranium market may not mean bullish for the stock prices of uranium miners and explorers. The same is true for negatives about nuclear and the uranium industry. While something may sound negative, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the stock will go up or down. It’s important to understand the moving parts and determine whether the underlying positive or negative narrative will be bullish or bearish for the uranium market.
The following outlines the type of positive and negative information that is out there concerning the market and can be ‘spun’ either way. In order for us to determine whether this type of information will have an impact long term or short term, we need to dig a little deeper than a statement that appears to have some validity. We need to remember this is a game of chess where some pieces may or may not have a material impact on future gains or losses.
So, after all that we have considered, let’s play both sides of the fence starting with the bull case. For beginners, bull case means we think it is a good idea to invest in uranium for the future. So let’s throw some generic numbers at it as a form of summary from earlier.
Uranium equals electricity, which is 10-11% of world demand. So unlikely they will switch the power off. It’s currently not fashionable to generate carbon dioxide. Nuclear doesn’t generate carbon dioxide (or at the very most, in negligible amounts). What is happening with nuclear power in the future? The answer is mostly all about China, they operate 36 reactors, are building 20 and have planned another 100. Japan may come back online which is neither here nor there as we just don’t know what they will do. India is also coming up the track too.
In 2019, U3O8 demand will be around 200 million pounds, mine supply is at 130 million, underfeeding supply (that’s the guys spinning the centrifuges) 25 million, MOX supply <5 million. Total supply equals 160 million, which means we’re short 40 million pounds a year.
The cost of production is probably around $60 per pound and spot prices and long term prices say it is currently nearer $30 per pound. More mine closures are coming in the next few years with no like for like replacements (or at least that’s the argument). The buyers/users are coming to a point where they need to renew contracts, so if they all rush at the same time to get a secure supply, there could be a bit of a jam at the door and some may have to pay big prices to secure a dwindling supply. That seems to be the historical pattern so far.
Remember we said at the lemon stand, someone wants to buy fifty drinks for the next three months to secure supply, well he’s in the queue with ten other guys who want the same thing. That is the expectation for a lot of investors in this space. That’s part of the reason why when uranium prices go up, they tend to overshoot. For example 2003 - 2007, $15 to $130, and 2010-2011, $40 to $70. Uranium stocks follow the uptrend, but not by double or triple like uranium, but in the hundreds or thousands of percentage increases.
So prices tend to overshoot, based on the historical patterns of when the buyers enter the market to buy uranium, they mostly always come in when the prices are at the highest and they don't buy as much when it is at its lowest, there is a little bit of chicken and egg going on here. So which comes first, the high prices because demand is going up, or prices are going up because the supply is low? Either way, if historical buying patterns are anything to go by, the next time the buyers come to market in a ‘herd’ type situation, we can expect to see overshoot. Later comes the longer periods of undershooting as the prices remain below the price of production.
If uranium prices go up, the stock starts to look attractive and then they will be in high demand, now we have another jam at the door, but this time it’s not the power plants, it’s the investors. Doug Casey a famous writer and speculator once said “When the market wants into gold stocks it’s like trying to force the contents of the Hoover Dam into a hose, in the case of uranium stocks, it’s more like a soda straw. it’s a very small market.” The combined market value of mining companies in this sector is $15 billion. Bill Gates is worth $95 billion - one guy, he could buy the whole lot (in theory). Another quote you will hear in this context is ‘it’s not a case of if but when’ (or words to that effect), the only trouble with that expression is it applies to death too. Patience is required for this. That about covers the bullish arguments, so we shall move on and continue arguing with ourselves on the other side of the fence.
A bear viewpoint means we would not want to invest in this market. So what are the popular arguments out there that the uranium market is a bad idea?
First, some of the existing fleet of nuclear reactors in the US are coming to an end. 98 current reactors will drop to somewhere nearer 89 by 2025. This will obviously mean less uranium is required. The US Energy Information Agency (EIA) projects that nuclear electricity generation will fall from an all-time peak in 2018 and decrease 17% by 2025. From 2019 to 2025 12 nuclear plants are scheduled to close.
The average life of these reactors is around 40 years old. It’s not unheard of, to get a license extended by another 40 years, so it is possible that the licenses to operate some of these reactors is extended, but playing the bear case means we should discount that.
Also in the US, any new nuclear plants are considered by the bears to be very costly to build. Costly includes budget overruns and time overruns. Here are a few examples. Vogtle nuclear power plant situated in Eastern Georgia (the state not the country) not far from Southern Carolina. The plant is currently constructing reactors 3&4 which is, by the way, the only units in the country built in the last three decades which doesn’t sound too bullish. Construction costs were initially planned to be $14 billion with a ‘ready for operation’ date set for 2017. Currently, costs are estimated to be north of $27 billion and the current date they are working too is 2021-22, with monthly cost overruns at around $100 million.
You would think they would have learned some lessons, and maybe the did, from when they installed Units 1 and 2 with an original construction budget of $1 billion, but finally coming in at $9 billion - Ouch. So a doubling of the budget on Units 3 & 4 sounds like a bargain compared to Units 1 & 2.
Another project is Flamanville is France where they are adding Reactor Unit 3 to an existing site. Construction commenced in late 2007 with a budget of 3.3 billion euros and the intent was to start operations in 2012. It’s currently considered that it’ll be up and running by mid-2020 at almost 11 billion euros in costs.
If those two projects are a representative sampling of how project budgets and schedules run in the nuclear power plant building game, it doesn’t sound great. I feel sorry for the project managers and recommend they take up the game of ‘blind folded darts’ as they may find that more satisfying.
Now seeing as China is building so many, it would be good to consider what they are facing with regard to overruns in terms of budgets and schedules. Haiyang is a power plant that was supposed to be constructed in 63 months, Unit 1 took 100 months and Unit 2 110 months. Unit 1 should have cost $5.8 billion and reportedly came in at $7.3 billion.
Sanmen Units 1 & 2 started construction in 2009 and were connected to the grid by 2018. Initial estimates of a 68 month construction time turned into around the 100-month to 110-month time frame. It was supposed to come in at just less than $5 billion and cost $6.1 billion. Note too, costings for Chinese power plants were difficult to find so they may not be as accurate as they should be. Either way, based on these two examples we see time overruns as we do in the West, but the costs don’t seem to explode as they do in the West. In terms of quality of construction, that is more difficult to measure and there may be a difference there too.
This may seem negative for nuclear, particularly in the West and that may be true, but remember the relationship between some of these arguments may not be heavily connected (or at all) with whether uranium stocks go up.
By the way, when we put out a number of ‘x’ reactors, the more important number is how much uranium they are actually using not how many reactors there are.
Supply destruction is a term that doesn’t really apply to companies that have been set up to buy and hold physical uranium only to dump it on the market later. So they lurk and could really be a dampener on the party. This point, in my view, is valid. However they are in the game to maximize their profits too, so it is not in their interests to flood the market. Another factor here is the skill level involved in knowing when to sell the uranium they hold. This leads us to consider that if an investor holds a company, when do you get off the elevator? Too early you make less than you could, too late and you ride the price up, and then back down (we’ll go through a real world example of how even the pros in the industry have done this later). To answer that question perhaps goes beyond the beginner so we leave it at that for now but thought-provoking nonetheless.
Another part of the risk here is that the nuclear industry has had some infamous accidents in the past which can sour things. Some say it is very safe or not as dangerous as other energy sources, and while that may be true, in this world, perception is everything. We need to remember the ripples of Fukushima on other governments and how that could occur again. \
That brings us to another part of our argument. Since Fukushima, some governments have reviewed and changed their policies to nuclear energy generation and reduced demand with the attraction of nuclear power waning. What we are really talking about here is loss of trust for how these plants operate and and some preconceived ideas with regards to how safe they are.
The OECD wrote an interesting study on this in 2017. The report highlights that Western Europe was probably affected the most, with shutdowns in some countries, although they were partly on the table anyway, it seemed to just make the decision easier. Italy voted not to pursue nuclear and it is quite possible that decision was in part due to what had occurred in Japan. According to the report, most countries conducted safety reviews of their existing plants.
Taiwan, oddly enough, did shut down its reactors which ran 15% of the electricity on the island, then it had a vote to decide what to do with nuclear power going forward with the question: “Do you agree with abolishing the first paragraph of Article 95 of the Electricity Act, which means abolishing the provision that ‘all nuclear-energy based power-generating facilities shall cease to operate by 2025?’”. Although the majority wanted to keep nuclear power going, the authorities are still planning on chopping it. The authorities are also expecting power shortages by 2021. An interesting way of running things there, I can’t say I am a fan of power cuts as I find electricity really handy.
Another argument we would need to consider here, is the question of how fast can miners get the product to market if the price goes up. So if we are negative on uranium investing, the argument goes that as soon as there is a demand, think of switching on a light bulb and a few pumps and, hey presto, we have uranium ready to go to the mill.
We covered earlier that mines that are currently offline can take significant lengths of time to come back online. For example, McArthur River mine in Canada which just went offline could take two years to get back online and producing and that is a mine that was operating already and is under a care and maintenance regime currently, which implies the company knows what is involved to get it back to production. Imagine a new mine where the unknowns are much greater.
Another substantial mine that may come online one day is Arrow which is considered to be huge, analysts think it will produce 21% of world supply, and the cost per pound is less than $20. Again time to production is an issue and the expectation currently is 2023-24 at a cost of $1.3 billion to get it started. Based on other examples we have considered, staying and on budget can be kind of tricky. So again this sounds like a great mine but if we are expecting an upturn in the market in the next five years, is this going to even produce a pound before the price has already risen? We don’t know, however, if we link this to long term contracts it is certainly a piece in play but maybe more of a takeover target to the right company. Remember Rio Tinto and the Roughrider mine that never was.
Another reason that makes it difficult to start or restart mines is the need for skilled workers as this is a specialized field, and there are only so many workers to go around to get mines restarted, so miners may find themselves short on skilled miners when the time comes.
Earlier we mentioned the downblending of weapons which we would be further supply and that Damocles sword will continue to hover over the market.
Nuclear waste is also an argument against this sector. So it’s currently very fashionable to recycle, eliminate waste and the like, so nuclear waste is ever present and is perceived as a major issue with using uranium as an energy fuel. Years ago one approach to get rid of waste was to put it in barrels and sail out on the high seas and dump it, most barrels would sink but a few didn’t so the sailors shot at them to make them sink, sometimes a machine gun would be more effective. Now that doesn’t sound too good, especially if you are either a scuba diver or a fish. Times have moved on and this is no longer the way to dispose of nuclear waste.
According to the WNA, waste is divided into three categories from the spent fuel which is in the high category to the tools and clothes used by workers in the plant which is in the low category. When the used fuel comes out of the rods, it is hot and remains so for many years, so for that time period, the spent fuel rods are kept underwater in a storage pool. The WNA website has a great photo of some workers looking into the storage pool which looks very like a swimming pool. They are not wearing masks or any other personal protection equipment aside from safety helmets. The most ironic item in the photo is the life ring buoy in the background. Now in the first instance, you probably don’t want to fall in, but if you really have to be saved by a lifebuoy from a pool with nuclear rods, you might be delaying the inevitable. Safety helmets for that matter seem kind of ironic there too. Apologies for getting sidetracked.
So the disposal of low and medium level waste is buried underground but not too deeply. The high-level waste is not disposed of, as there are no disposal sites currently, so disposal means storing it out the backyard, typically, of the nuclear power plant. Now that doesn’t sound like a good solution but according to Mr Shellenberger (a guy who thinks nuclear is the bees knees) ‘If all the nuclear waste from U.S. power plants were put on a (US) football field, (around 5000m2 ) of it would stack up just 50 feet (15m) high. In comparison to the waste produced by every other kind of electricity production, that quantity is close to zero’.
All forms of energy generation have some form of waste product and nuclear waste problems, although long in duration are compact in relation to these. While keeping them in canisters valued at a half million to a million dollars a piece seems as though that is not a solution, it kind of is, it has worked for now. In terms of deaths, in comparison to other energy sources, waste nuclear is not really causing any problems, as long as you don’t dump it at sea or anywhere else for that matter and take pot-shots at it with a rifle.
Another example of a perceived problem becoming a solution is as research and technology develop, scientists will find some novel way of using the waste possibly by recycling it for further use. This does sound like they are trying to kick the canister down the road, so to speak, but either way, it doesn’t have a huge impact on how the uranium market will play out over the next few years, interesting nonetheless.
Renewables are competitive with nuclear power. Now, this is a statement that comes up from time to time and is worth exploring briefly. Lets just set out the fact that all energy forms have some form of subsidy behind them. You may, however, think ‘but surely not big oil as it’s been around for ages and it needs no government support’, and you would be wrong. The International Monetary Fund in 2017 released a report on global fossil fuel subsidies coming up with a number north of $5 trillion, yes trillion, not billion. The IEA says that in 2016, renewables received $140 billion in 2016. Big numbers in both cases but the point here is subsidies are for all by the look of things, and they tend to skew the picture on which energy type is the cheapest. Another reason it’s a cloudy picture is that you also get into semantics about the definition of what a subsidy is.
With that in mind, we will wade on to what is out there with regards to which is cheap and which is expensive. One way to look at this is to go back to Germany, we mentioned it earlier in comparison to France as they have more expensive electricity than France. Germany is also reducing or has reduced its nuclear power electricity generation and chosen the path of solar and wind generated energy. From 2017 counting back ten years, electricity prices have risen by 39%.
Now another area - California, it too has chosen the path of renewables and it too has seen an increase in prices for electricity. According to the EIA, residential prices were $19.30 cents per Kilowatt Hour in March 2019 which is up from $12.51 cents in 2005. So are we seeing a pattern here? Some would say yes and some would say no, either way, we do know that the wind does not always blow nor the sun always shine. Emuloader 1.0 released!, No more megathreads, dodgy sites, ads or captchas

Edit: Allow me to emphasise that Emuloader's ELDR system is a way to turn your existing rom libraries which are stored in the cloud, as well as publicly available romhacks, homebrew and abandonware into a format more easily manipulated. Think of it as a compatibility layer and stopover tool. As these features become possible natively the ELDR system will be deprecated. It is not to be used for piracy, and I highly discourage it, so much that piracy talk will land you an instant ban in the discord and emuloader subreddit. The download system is just a small part of a robust customisable emulator front end, manager, boxart finder, and sorting tool, please don't think that this is its primary usage, it isn't. I only posted on /roms first because of the large audience.
Emuloader is now available on GitHub!
Introduction:
It's done. No more megathread, no more looks through mega or clicking through adfly links or trying to find the right download button or sifting through malware infested websites. No more download limits, speed caps, broken roms, password protected zips and rars. No more manually updating your emulators every week and moving installs about hoping for nothing to break. No more weird download managers to get things off zippyshare or weird names with 12 different groups and urls in your rom name that you have to manually sift through. No more mixing up regions because you can't tell if (U) means universal or USA. No more looking for boxart sets and carefully cropping and naming each image or searching for missing images because your set was incomplete!
It's like /roms, /emulation, itunes, steam and google drive all mixed into one. 6 months on and I've (mostly) finished what I set out to do.
An all-in-one client that finds, downloads, and plays your backed up games, always with the newest versions of emulators. With some cloud sync magic thrown in! It's got a library manager like itunes, automatic updating, set-up, cloud backups and restores likes steam. And it's all open source.
It will have one click sharing of games saves or homebrew roms with your friends, automatic streaming of local multiplayer games. One-click to join the lobbies of your friends in different emulators through one unified interface.
Features
The featurelist includes:
Here are screenshots (https://imgur.com/a/QaDsVP7)
Here's the reveal video I posted a few days ago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQDbhwJoWUk)
I've also made a 30 second feature video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1DRs8CBvRI)
You can find all the information, including the download links here! (https://tungstencore.com/emuloade)
When I started, all I knew was I've seen on discords and even on this subreddit how annoying and frustrating it is when trying to grab your backups off the web and fiddling with which emulator to use and getting boxart and the whole experience and figured that there had to be a better way, kind of like steam where you open the client and its got all your games listed ready to download, with the emulators just as easy to set-up with one click to download and play, but it's become so much more.
Rom sources & .eldrs + Legal stuff:
Obviously I cannot have links to roms hardcoded in and for this I have designed a new way for backups to be shared easily (between yourself and yourself only as we all know sharing roms is piracy and I don't endorse it, but hauling upto hundreds of gigs of backups wherever you go is also stupid) called .eldrs.
.eldrs/sources are files which are basically lists of encoded games, their sizes and the downloads. You import these sources by simply dragging and dropping or importing directly from a link (such as a raw pastebin). and the client is instantly populated! It's built for use with your already existing cloud services, primarily dropbox which it has native support for.
I can't bundle eldrs with the client for obvious reasons but it will help you find some during first time setup, and there's the guide for you to make your own up on the subreddit.
Obvious disclaimer that you shouldn't use it to make your pirating life easier, only use the roms you've legally dumped yourself and don't go around posting .eldrs on the open web. More information on https://tungstencore.com/emuloade#Disclaimer
Fortunately I've had some patrons totalling about $10 a month at peak to help me develop but honestly if I were to continue development and afford finishing off the featureset I do require your help! Please donate to my patreon to help me continue development (Found on the website) and to get extra perks. Also join the discord to be a part of the community and get updates and sources first!
False positives and Open source info:
Although I submitted the app to avast, bitdefender and a few others a few months ago, the codebase had changed significantly and might be detected as a false positive. I know avast reports is because it says the app is rarely used (which of course it is I'm only releasing it to the public now!)
Nevertheless, rest assured that the client code is visible on github, and the python modules were compiled using pyinstaller and so can also be easily decompiled and viewed.
Here is the docs article on false positives https://tungstencore.com/docs/false-positives-with-av/
Patreon and supporting development:
If you've liked the work I've done, and want to help me make it better, round out the features and start adding new ones I'd really appreciate throwing a few dollars my way on Patreon or ko-fi. I can't keep up regular work on this with 5$ a month (although I appreciate it very much!). You don't have to, but it'll help and comes with some extra perks!

I am tired and exhausted playing video games( Extremely Long)

I (turned 18 this October) used to play a lot of games. I was very fond of games since my childhood. I used to play on whatever platform I was offered to play games on. In early childhood, coming from an under-developed/developing Asian country, I had not much to game on other than keypad mobile my parents used to have, T.V, video game that was gifted to me, and later in our PC that was brought home for my sister when I was in grade 3 and used to sneak in and play whenever she was not home.
I was not necessarily the most hard-working student yet I was sharp minded and used to do well in class despite low to no effort and end up being the class topper. I had no PC of mine, I was still sharing PC with my sister until grade 10. As I was going into higher classes, I was being more hardworking and meritorious student. I ended up being a Valedictorian with a GPA of 3.90/4.00. I used to play games like age of empires, CS source with bots, Need for Speed, Road Rash, WWE, GTA, World of Warcraft: Frozen Throne, Diablo 2, FIFA 2005, FIFA 2007, FIFA 2010 etc. which were usually offline. I was extremely fond of each and every game but had limited access and were offline so I wasn't addicted as of that time though I could go hours playing If I had no one home.
I got own smartphone once I graduated middle school and sister already had her own laptop so the PC was also officially mine. Didn't have the latest specs, but was okay enough for moderate gaming. I installed COC in phone once I was done with middle school and played up until TH7 and I was bored and switched to Clash Royale and then comes my first addiction. I was so hooked I used to push ladder, play average of 3-4 hours of Clash Royale daily for 3 months continuously. I did terrible in my exams and my parents knew I was addicted knowing how often they saw me engaged in phone. Also, one day I was hardcore pushing ladder and I lost of game because of internet disconnection and I raged and ended of punching my phone and broke it's screen. I instantly regretted and my parents said they'll have it repaired once I was done with board exams of grade 11. I studied well and scored 3.75/4.00 GPA. My phone was repaired and I was no longer addicted as I knew the game itself wasn't so fun and had me raging most of the time. Maybe the phone broke for good.
I was doing well in studies, had normal life, everything was fine. I wasn't addicted to any specific game but I was addicted to gaming itself. My classmate used to play Counter Strike 1.6 since our PC didn't support CS:GO and we couldn't buy it either. He used to talk about CS and he didn't encouraged me to play, I wasn't pressurized but with my history with CS Source, I wanted to try CS 1.6, play with friends, have fun and be good at it. I started playing CS passionately after I returned home from school for 4-5 hours daily even when I had no friends to play with. Playing random pugs with random people was my daily lifestyle. I started skipping assignments, flunked Chemistry classes and was hooked on CS for so long that I was average/ below average student. I ended up scoring 3.40/4.00 in 12th standard and was disappointed in ownself as well as disappointed my parents.
I was on a vacation there onwards and decided to pursue degree in Computer Science and Engineering. My PC hard disk was dysfunctional suddenly and I only had my phone in the vacation. Again, back to Clash Royale but not as addicted as earlier. Moderate gaming, heavy Youtube and movies. As the vacation was ending and my entrance exams were nearing, my parents bought me a brand new phone, Galaxy S9+ which was latest flagship of Samsung at that time. PUBG mobile was extremely popular and almost every friend were hooked on it and one day I decided to play it ownself too due to peer pressure and wasn't fond of it and didn't play it at all then onwards. I gave my entrance examinations, was enjoying vacations binging web-series and playing Clash Royale once in a while. Did pass the entrance examinations but wasn't eligible for scholarship and coming from upper middle class, my parents could barely afford my education which is quite expensive.
Now comes, MAJOR addictions.
College was about to begin in a month or so and then there was hype of Call of Duty : Mobile and I was also hyped for it and played it in its release of first day and LOVED it and was hooked on then onwards. I was addicted and I knew it and thought I would stop ASAP once the college starts but College started and I was pushing rank in COD : Mobile playing at least 6 hours a day to even 10 hours a day. The addiction was real and I wasn't even well aware of it. Took college lightly and played games after college to late night. My sleep schedule was already messed up since couple of months of vacation and late night gaming. I used to play at least till 12 A.M everyday and sometimes even upto 3-4A.M. Used to fall asleep in class and also scolded by professors and excluded from class. Yet, I played and played. All of a sudden, I lost my phone on my way back home and we did report to police yet it was not to be found. I was super addicted and I had no functional PC and no phone that could run COD: Mobile. I used to sleep most of the time then onwards, started doing assignments due to compulsion yet deep down inside I was desperate AF to play games and had my PC repaired and also upgraded it's graphics card, added extra RAM.
Now comes another tragic addiction. CS:GO was already F2P. I had a lot of my classmates playing it, I/We even used to go to cyber cafes and spend a lot of my pocket money playing CS:GO and lying at home making excuses to waste money and time before I had my own PC rebuilt. I started playing CS:GO and I was super addicted. Board exams of first semester were near and Parents knew I was addicted. They decided to unplug PC until my exams were over. I still procrastinated and didn't study until eleventh hour and studied before 10 days of exam. I did barely enough(results aren't out yet) in the exam as I didn't prepare well. Remaining 5 exams got cancelled due to COVID outbreak.I was actually starting to feel better without any games, frustration of ranking up and without raging. Life was fine, I started talking to a girl I had a crush on. Turned out she liked me too. I started spending my time binging series, building a relationship with her which felt so much better than gaming and it's frustrations. I did almost nothing productive in near 5 months quarantine yet I successfully forged a relationship with her.
Online classes resumed, we had less time to talk. Parents bought me a new laptop, better specs than PC, sister bought herself a new phone and handed her old phone to me which was also S9+. I started playing CS:GO like crazy again. Since we shouldn't be going to college and all day at home, I pened Zoom in background and play CS:GO almost 6-7 hours daily and I even had 128 hours of playtime in two weeks at a certain time , watching live streams, watching every CS:GO event and what not. I was crazily addicted. Semester ended and I had no freaking idea what was taught, paid little to no attention. I did do assignments, but, it was all copied from friends as I was doing it just for the sake of doing assignments and I had no clue what I was being taught. Exams date were published and exams of first semester which was postponed due to COVID outbreak was to be resumed too.

I decided to quit gaming altogether as It brought be no joy and fun playing, constant stimulation of brain, dopamine overdose that I was not a happy person as I used to be, frustrations, rage, lack of sleep, extremely poor academics and pretty much everything was fucked up by now. I stumbled upon this sub reddit and was motivated to quit gaming and I did quit CS:GO but, it lasted only for a week.I played for a week and find it no fun and only frustration and removed steam and every game on my laptop and PC. I still watched live streams since I was easily bored and resisted the temptations to play CS:GO. And now comes another addiction, I stopped playing CS:GO and had no games on my phone either but since It is so easy to remove and reinstall games in phone, I installed COD: Mobile, Clash of Clans and I started playing again. I used to play COC while playing CS:GO too. CS:GO in Laptop and COC in phone. Since, I uninstalled CS:GO, I was hooked to COD: Mobile all over again and started pushing rank not because I was enjoying it a lot but I wanted to achiever top rank(Legendary) which I had already achieved in season 1 and wanted to achieve again and grinded again, everyday 5-6 hours, COC around 1-1.5 hours and social media too.
Coming to present, I have my exams extremely near, to be exact January 14th onwards, and I know almost nothing and how I'll even pass the exams. I played roughly 40+ hours COD this week and I played COD from 8:00 A.M. to 3:12 P.M. with breaks in between and thought I am done with gaming and all this shit dopamine that it releases and frustrations and I'll stop wasting time over it and uninstalled both COD and COC from phone and I have no game in my PC either. Also, I wanted to write this post back then as soon as I stopped gaming yet I wanted to study for a couple of hours and see If I, once a valedictorian, can even study at all and I studied for 30 minutes or so before I was sleepy and had headache due to intense gaming and improper sleep since a week or so.I took a nap, woke up and did little bit of studying , had dinner and posting this right now.
So, I am just 18 year old guy and already in second year of college( I was bright student in childhood so I skipped grade 1 and grade 6 as teachers and parents thought I was capable of recovering by the end of middle school and it'll be better for me in the long run) I am/was in process of ruining my life due to severe gaming addiction of all sort. A lot of damage may have already been done, but, since life is long and I am strongly committed and determined to quit gaming once and for all this time( I actually hate gaming, I don't want to touch games at all, even moderately). My academics are extremely poor and it is my major concern as of now. In the long run, I want to be happy person, , quiz, listening podcasts, improving academics, being more social as I was earlier, enjoy reading books as I used to enjoy before being addicted to gaming.
I have a family that loves me, I have a wonderful girlfriend who loves me, handful of genuine friends. The only problem is with my addiction and my extremely poor academics. I am in the abyss of my life right now.
I feel like shit right now and my exams are from January 14th and there's high probability I may flunk all my exams but I don't want to. Wondering If It's even possible to make it at least barely enough that I don't fail. 15 days preparation leave and then 3 days gap for each exam and total of five tough subjects exam( Jan 14th-Jan 30th) . A lot of damage has been already done and I wonder If I can even recover and how long it may take?
Firstly, I am very glad and thankful to whoever took time to read it and I would like any queries If you have any and also, most importantly advice and suggestions. :)I hope you have a great day ahead. My best wishes are with you. <3
Edit: My eyes hurt and also my shoulder due to heavy screen time and same position. I wish I never played any games :(

Unable to launch "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" on Linux Mint using Steam Play / Proton

Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie who is very interested in Linux. I have used and experienced some Linux distributions. Recently I switched to Linux Mint, which I find quite stable and easy to use. I just installed Steam and purchased "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" and I have completely finished setting up my NVIDIA card to run on Performance Mode. The thing is, I can't manage to run the game using Steam Play / Proton but I did it with "Eternal Return: Black Survival" using Steam Play on Manjaro XFCE. It just exits and does nothing after having done processing the API Vulkan Shaders (took about 15 minutes to do this though). However, I am able to run "The Witcher 3" in offline mode (without Steam) using Wine with very bad performance.
I did some research on Google and still don't have the answer. Some say it is related to the hard drive's file system (NTFS, sharing with Windows) and it needs permissions set to the user. But I am using Ext4 then this doesn't matter. Some say setting fstab mount parameters could make it work but I don't know how to do that.
I have no intention of going back to Windows, and thanks so much if you guys can help me with this. Thank you!
*** My PC configs: ***
Laptop: Dell Inspiron 15 7537
CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-4210U Processor
VGA: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2GB

ffxiv unable to patch files [30413][25008][20495]

Thought i'd get an easy answer from square-enix themselves signing up to their forums but even though i've been a part off FFXIV since 1.0 of ffxiv, apparently not good enough and need to wait 14 days to officially post on their forums. :/ thanks square-enix, just want to play the game guys, almost like you hate your playerbase some how.
My issue is the above in the title, i've un-installed the launcher. Re-installed the launcher.
I've made the files in my documents not "read only"I've disabled my anti-virus and my firewall
I've made sure every application in every folder FFXIV has it's name on it completely ticked with Run as administration.
I've tried to run steam in offline mode, won't allow you while the launcher is active.
I've deleted some 4e93 folder or something some reddit post said and then reboot the launcher.
I've done a bunch of things in the few hours being persistent and ready to game.
Nothing seems to work and i can't ask the people that actually make the game for help for fourteen days, seeing as i've just paid for game-time and these issues are frustrating and no official dev help. Kinda not wanting to return and just want a refund at this point. Done a few youtube known issues help videos as well and none of them have helped. All i'm seeing at this point are people saying "thankyou this worked" and yet none of them have helped me, do you guys have any idea what the hell i need to do just to download the first five minutes of files? The weirdest thing is i've downloaded the game a few times in the past with no issues, i was just playing it back in july of last year for a month before i deleted it, had no problems installing.
please help!
EDIT: I've now ran my VPN Exitlag while launcher is running and patching and still running into the same issue.
EDIT2: So i changed my DNS settings to 4.2.2.2 / ALT DNS 4.2.2.4 and i seem to have at this point gotten over the 1g percent in the update. If people are having problems try this. This is a really bonkers and stupid problem, same computer and location i've played this on before this problem. I've noticed it's an on-going problem with the launcher since 2014-15. Since Square don't like people talking to them for a stupid amount of time, or seem to have addressed this issue i guess can't get really be surprised they'll ever fix this issue. Like the lost tale of aussie servers.

The Definitive Quest Piracy Guide

The Definitive Quest Piracy Guide
(THIS IS A PCVR AND QUEST PIRACY GUIDE)
So you wanna sail the seven seas of virtual reality?

Last Edited: 15/01/2021

In my continued attempts to quiet the spam of people begging for the quest game links, I've written up a guide towards obtaining it yourself instead of spamming threads asking for it on this subreddit.
^ I think i've accomplished this mission now :]
This guide shows you how to download and sideload pirated games on the Oculus Quest 1/Q2 as well as the best place to find pirated games for PCVR headsets or Quests connected through Oculus Link or any other wireless streaming solution.
Just to reiterate and stress this, DO NOT PUBLICLY POST LINKS TO PIRACY DOWNLOADS. BY DOING THIS YOU ARE RISKING THE SUBREDDIT AND ENTIRE PIRACY MIRRORS TO BE DELETED. I'm thankfully able to circumvent these rules by not providing *direct* links to downloads, but just pointing people to where they can access these downloads by themselves :)
I am not affiliated with any of the hosts of these links. Just someone in the community who knows the ins and outs trying to point noobies in the right direction and to (hopefully) slow down the subreddit becoming nothing but a cesspit of people asking the same question over and over. This also means don't come to me for help, I don't run any of this stuff. Either leave your problem in the comments for help or ask the Discord.
AND I DO NOT ANSWER DIRECT MESSAGES
QUEST 2 USERS: Not all Quest 1 games currently work with the Quest 2, please take a look at this spreadsheet before installing any games.
if you're here looking for a cracked version of Virtual Desktop, there isn't one. VD is uncrackable as far as I know. If you want a PCVR streamer for Quest, here is a free alternative.

WILL I BE BANNED FOR PIRATING GAMES?
As it stands right now, you won't be banned for pirating games. As of right now, Facebook has never issued any form of punishment to anyone for piracy.
If you feel weary when it comes to pirating games, you can take some precautions just to be safe.
"LVL 0: Do nothing, play cracked games online and offline
LVL 1: Play cracked games only when your wifi is turned off (still not safer since oculus sends logs)
LVL 2: Spoof games as random packagenames and only play with wifi off (safer, but still not 100% safe)
LVL 3: Play with wifi on but block all oculus and facebook domains through pihole or your router (even safer, still SOME game developers will see your ip trying to connect to their servers, using a fake dns does work)
LVL 4: Block quest external access to internet from your routepihole (only allowing stuff vd and file transfer between devices on LAN)"
- Zale Anderson, VRP Discord

PLEASE READ THIS GUIDE CAREFULLY TO NOT MAKE ANY MISTAKES
Also, if you're manually sideloading, DON'T USE SIDEQUEST. THEY HAVE AN APK BLACKLIST AND WILL NOT LET YOU SIDELOAD PIRATED GAMES. YOU CAN USE AN OLDER VERSION OF SIDEQUEST TO SIDELOAD BLACKLISTED APKS THAT CAN BE OBTAINED THROUGH RCLONE BROWSER, WHICH IS MENTIONED LATER IN THIS GUIDE

YOU WILL NEED:
Oculus ADB Drivers
An Oculus developer account with the Quest in developer mode (Tutorial)
EDIT: I've heard about recently that you now need a Credit Card to get a developer account for verification purposes. I don't know any way around this so I apologise if you can't make a developer account for this.
A Telegram Account (requires phone number, if you don't have one that's on you)
EDIT: you can use various websites that provide free phone numbers online, namely TextNow (US only but VPNs work) and FreePhoneNum. thanks to u/FlowV4 on this post for reminding me that these apps existed lol

Any device capable of sideloading to an Oculus Quest/Quest 2 (this guide will be directed to Windows 10 users as that's the main use case here, if you use something else then I think there are downloads on the Telegram for other operating systems. Keep reading to know how to get to the Telegram)
A USB Type C cable routing from your PC to the quest (to sideload games to the headset)
A Discord Account (NOT A BRAND NEW ACCOUNT: using a new account will get you instantly banned from the VRP Discord. This is a measure to prevent raiding/bots. I do not know how old your account has to be to join and I apologise for being unable to figure it out. I'd give it 14-30 days maybe.)

Step 1: Join the VRP Discord server. The invite link is a PINNED POST on this subreddit. When in the Discord server, head over to the #rules channel, read the rules and react to the bottom message to gain access to the rest of the server
you may use the #vrp-updates channel in the server to be notified when new games are added or games are updated on the download mirrors.
Step 2: Go to the #faq channel, scroll to the top and JOIN THE TELEGRAM (Telegram link is underneath " How to sideload with AndroidSideloader: " section. You'll have to download the Telegram application on your PC and make an account to get into the VRP Telegram.
Step 3: If you needed to download Telegram, revisit the Telegram link in the VRP Discord and using your account you just made/logged into, join the VRP Telegram chat. At the top of the Telegram interface you should be able to access the pinned message.

So at this point there are multiple methods here for quest piracy. I'm going to go through them here.

ROOKIE'S SIDELOADER VRP EDITION (AUTOMATIC SIDELOADING, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR NOOBIES)
On the Telegram's pinned message is an exe file for the Rookie's Sideloader VRP Edition installer. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING THIS TO PIRATE GAMES. It's a simple application that when downloaded and installed (IF WINDOWS/YOUR BROWSER SAYS IT'S A VIRUS, THIS IS A FALSE POSITIVE AND MEANS YOU NEED TO UPDATE YOUR VIRUS DATABASES TO STOP IT FROM APPEARING OR JUST ADD IT TO YOUR EXCEPTIONS.) and when launched, you can connect your quest to your PC, Select from a huge drop down menu of games and easily, with a couple of clicks, automagically download and sideload games to your quest.
If you get Rookie's Sideloader VRP and are prompted with an update on launch, accept the update and it'll be downloaded and launched on your PC. Games on the list are automatically added and updated at the rate they're cracked by the pirates.

RCLONE BROWSER (MANUAL SIDELOADING, RECOMMENDED IF USING ANY OTHER SIDELOADING METHOD, ALSO FOR PCVGEARVR GAMES)
On the pinned messages list, find the rclone browser part and click the link corresponding to the operating system you're on and (for Windows) you'll be redirected to a message containing a RAR file. Download that file, extract it and run RcloneBrowser.exe. You'll then be presented with 2 or 3 VRP mirrors, double click one of them and you'll be able to access and download APKs and OBBs under the Quest Games folder for manual sideloading, if thats your thing.
If the UI for rclone browser is confusing to you, refer to this short tutorial video. (when the game you chose is showing as running, wait until it says finished before sideloading)
WHITE WHIDOW SIDELOADER - NEWER, PRE-ALPHA ALTERNATIVE TO ROOKIE'S FOR MAC, LINUX AND WINDOWS
all info regarding WWS can be found here. includes download and installation guide
EXTRA, LIKELY NECESSARY INFORMATION
To manually sideload, use sidequest or rookies sideloader to access the quests file system and drag the "com.xxx.xxx" folder to the directory Android/obb then sideload the apk using the sideloading method of your choice.
Not all games need obb files so they won't come with them.
To access sideloaded applications, go to your Quest's library screen, on the top right select the drop down menu that says "All", scroll down and select Unknown Sources. From there you can access your sideloaded games and apps

UPDATING QUEST GAMES
To update your pirated Quest games, while keeping the current version of the game installed, download and sideload the new version of the game using your preferred method and your save data should stay intact with the new update installed
OTHER
rclone browser also provides downloads for other tools and options regarding your Quest and games. This includes:
App launchers spoofed as legit apps that can be launched from your regular library screen, eliminating the need to go to unknown sources
Method(s) to disable Telemetry tracking
Alternate sideloading methods such as older versions of sidequest that allow blacklisted apks, total commander for local sideloading and rookies sideloader vrp edition.
All the old Quest firmware versions and methods to downgrade
Previous versions of games
DLC for games
Modded/maxed out save files for games
GEARVR AND PC TETHERED VR
Rclone browser also provides downloads for GearVR and PCVR games.
The GearVR games should sideload fine onto a Quest but there is no guarantee that they will fully function. However I don't know how to play GearVR games on a PC using a PCVR headset
THE PCVR GAMES ARE TO BE DOWNLOADED AND PLAYED ON A PC WITH A PCVR TETHERED HEADSET OR A QUEST CONNECTED TO A PC WITH OCULUS LINK/VIRTUAL DESKTOP/ALVR.
YOU CANNOT SIDELOAD PCVR GAMES ONTO A QUEST 1 OR 2 AND PLAY THEM STANDALONE.
To play pirated PCVR games, download one using any of the rclone mirrors. Some may be packaged into repacked installers to make downloads smaller, so follow any instructions that are (hopefully) provided alongside the repack files.
PLAYING WITH STEAMVR
In my experience, the easiest way to run these games is through SteamVR, being only a Quest owner i've found running games through the Oculus PC app with Link very unreliable due to their software just being a MASSIVE processing power hog so only use Oculus Link if you have no other way or you think your PC is beefy enough for it. More on this a little bit down the line.
So, if you're on an Oculus headset (Quest with Link^, Rift) enable unknown sources in the settings for the Oculus PC software so you can run SteamVR.
Find the executable (.exe) for the game you've just downloaded and installed/extracted (you may have to look around in the game directory depending on what game) and add it as a Non-Steam game shortcut within Steam.
Then go to properties for the shortcut you have just created within Steam and enable "Include in VR Library"
Then when running SteamVR on launch you'll be presented with your VR library where your shortcuts should appear and you can just launch the games from there and enjoy.
^If you do Quest PCVR exclusively on Virtual Desktop, you do not need the Oculus software at all (correct me if i'm wrong)

POSSIBLE SETUP IMPROVEMENTS (IN MY EXPERIENCE)
Here i'm just gonna dump a few things that have enhanced my PCVR experience on a Quest over time in hopes that it'll help out others.
I play games on a budget ass rig (i5-4590s, 8gb ram, gtx 1650) so running the Oculus app and playing with Oculus Link is a MASSIVE MASSIVE hit on performance in games.
So if you're able to, use Virtual Desktop instead of Oculus Link as long as you've got a nice connection (preferrably ethernet) and at the cost of a bit of pixelation in display or some higher latency, you will run games WAAAY smoother. I am incredibly below spec for Half-Life: Alyx but by running it with Virtual Desktop and not the Oculus app bloating up my CPU power it sat at more than playable fps (50-72fps) for me at all times on low fidelity.
Along with that, close anything else you have running in the background like any web browser or Discord.
Sure VD is $25/£20, but its worth it not only for the experience improvements but for supporting the developer because this guy is doing a better job than Facebook when it comes to this stuff.

This post will be updated for general improvements (i suck at writing guides) and if any changes come along to the process.
I hope this helps those who want to try before they buy or the many clueless people who just want free games on their shiny new VR headsets.
But remember, please support developers and their work by buying their games on legit marketplaces, maybe wait for a sale or something and buy their games if you enjoy them. They absolutely slave away to bring us these incredible experiences and we are responsible for making sure they can afford a tin of sardines to ration for the week and maybe buy more models off the asset store for their next game
I know this is coming from the redditor who just taught you how to pirate every single VR game but i still like to support developers by buying their games if i enjoy them and it goes way further than you think when you buy a game.
Except for Bethesda and Rockstar, please pirate their games to your hearts content as they are shitty companies releasing low effort VR ports for a quick buck from the small but growing amount of VR enthusiasts and gamers.

Thanks for reading and enjoy!
