Summary: the majority consensus seems to be that they're mostly not worth it, and the same effect can be achieved by simplifying the rules of regular games. However, Catan Junior and My Little Scythe seem to be particular exceptions. Thanks for the input! Original post: My oldest is 9, and I've been teaching him modern games since about 5 years old (starting with the likes of Love Letter and Zombie Dice, and moving up to Battle Sheep and Ticket To Ride, then slightly more complex games like Hive, Hanabi, 5 Minute Dungeon, Tsuro of the Seas, Hanamikoji, and so on). He picked them all up pretty readily and didn't need any particular babying. My next kids are currently 3 and 1. I'm now looking towards the future when they're a little older and function as a built-in gaming group, and while I have already introduced the 3 year old to Spooky Stairs and The Enchanted Tower, I'm noticing a lot of "junior" versions of games, like Quoridor Kid and Catan Junior. Now what I learned from my oldest is that they don't necessarily need these "dumbed-down" versions of classic games, but I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing. So how about it, parent gamers, is there value in "junior" versions of classic games or is it just a temporary waste of money before moving onto the "real" versions? And if I see then cheap in a charity shop, which has happened a couple of times now, are they still worthwhile, or not worth it even then? Edit: I'll deliberately not count thematically-modified kids' versions of games, like how Cluedo Junior is about figuring out who ate the cake instead of solving a murder. I mean games with a noticeably simplified version of the core mechanic. Edit 2: 65% upvoted? Why are the other 35% of you unhappy with my question? I'd be interested to hear your opinions too.
